(S03E13) Another season comes and goes. I hate to say it, because I love this show, but I was a little disappointed with this finale. Same as I was with Deadwood a few nights ago. I just found it to be a bit of a slow episode that kind of meandered along. It (sort of) tied up a few loose ends and the cliffhanger? Not too sure how I feel about that either.
I mean, don't get me wrong, this was a great episode. Every Rescue Me episode is. But it just lacked something. The opening was outstanding, I'll say that. What a great idea to show Tommy daydreaming about the crew before 9/11. Jimmy and Billy were there. Sean and Franco were both still probies. It was well done.
But the rest of the episode? We never got any resolution to Uncle Teddy. Granted, his storyline was weak this season anyway, but what about the troubles he was having with his new wife? There was no mention at all. Jerry's one scene was poorly executed too. He wandered off from the hospital and made his way to the firehouse. He was all disoriented and to be honest, I really feel like the writer's owed Jerry's character a bit more than what we got. So are we supposed to be left wondering whether or not he'll ever come back to work? Seems like he most likely won't be.
Lou and Franco, at least their stories came full circle. Lou's one experience on his cousin's boat? Didn't go as planned seeing as how he could barely muster the balance to walk along the dock without getting on his hands and knees. Nice cameo by Artie Lange as Lou's cousin though.
Franco studied his butt off for the lieutenant's exam. He even had Richie quiz him. But when the time came, he tanked it. So he'll be hanging around the house with Lou too. So will Mike because he decided he didn't really want to transfer. As far as Sean and Maggie went? Well, they had a lot of sex. No real plot advancement there.
And then we have Tommy. First off, he better not get back with Janet in season four because I really dislike her. Already she wants to move back in with Tommy, for the girls and to add legitimacy to her pregnancy. But it might not even be Tommy's! Despite all that, he still can't muster up a good enough reason to turn in his walking papers.
That evening, at Sheila's new beach-house, Tommy came clean with her and told her he wouldn't be retiring. Needless to say, Sheila flipped out. First, she roofied Tommy's drink again. After he passed out, she went hysterical (she was drunk too) and started throwing stuff and yelling at Tommy's passed out body, because "she didn't buy this house just for herself." At one point, she threw an oil lamp and it lit the wall on fire. At least she had the sense to call 911, but she wasn't able to drag Tommy's body out of the house before the smoke got to her.
So clearly, Tommy I'm sure will be fine. But it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Sheila doesn't make it. I personally think she'd work fine as one of Tommy's ghosts, but who knows. I can't say I agree with Tommy's decision (because it almost guarantees he'll be back with Janet), but Sheila is officially nuts. She's deserves everything coming at her.
Despite all my gripes, there were still some great quotes. My favorite? When Tommy was caught off guard after Katie asked him what sperm was:
"Well, uh, it's a food. It's like Spam, except you know, it's got more protein and it's harder to find in the store."
Rescue Me will return for a fourth season in spring 2007.

Can anyone tell me the name of the song playing when the house was burning at the end of the show? I think it may be called "You're the one I love" and it was very familiar but I cannot place it.
Any help would be appreciated.

I thought the season finale would be at least as good as the last few episodes if not better, but it wasn't. With the fire department arriving at Sheila's house, I'm sure Tommy and Sheila will be fine. Perhaps this will be a wake-up call for Sheila-- that Tommy doesn't have romantic feelings for her, and she was trying to buy his love. Tommy should not have accepted the gift of the truck from her, that was his first (one of) mistake. Sheila is a nut case, and needs to move on.

Shelia has every reason to be crazy, she spent her entire fund on Tommy, and he screws her again. She pannicked. She clearly loves him, the ghost's love them as a couple, I hope they both make it out. I hate Janet, Toomy belongs with Shelia just to burn Janet.

I think it was a good episode...not too great. Loved the reference to Big Love.
What else could they have discussed about Jerry? He's in a hospital, he can't come to work, and there were hints throughout that Jerry will retire and Lou will easily take over the chief's job. As for Teddy, the less said the better I guess, even though they should have resolved the storyline.
I really, really hate both Sheila and Janet. Janet for her self-centered thinking and Sheila for her extreme whininess. The scene where she was crying and screaming was sooo annoying, but then again Tommy has treated her so badly throughout. I hate cliffhangers...Have to wait till May to find out what happens next. Overall, a great season.

I feel mroe sympathetic towards Sheila than Janet, for one thing you can't blame a crazy person :) Janet on the other hand seems a calculating, conniving bitch who's about to retrograde Tommy's personal growth back to Season 1. She's just looking out for herself really, and though she's gone through hardships of her own, I really think behind-her-holier than thou exterior she has plenty of issues she needs to work on. I wonder though, if the writers know if she's coming across that way? Because I've yet to see any self-reflection for some of the things she takes for granted.
I don't agree that Sheila would work as a ghost, not just because the show doesn't need another death, also because she remains Tommy's alternative to Janet and a legitimate way for him to deal with the guilt over the death of his cousin.
You forgot to mention the other thing with Franco's daughter, and how that was sort of resolved as well.
I can't say I liked this finale, as far as episodes go this was definitely one of the weakest, which sucks all the more because it is a season finale. It would have been better as a 2 hour one for sure especially since there were plenty of filler throughout the season that could have been cut in order to spread the finale out a bit.

I liked the season finale. It was a coda to the season and while it didn't resolve everything...well, real life doesn't necessarily resolve everything either.
I did wonder at one point if Franco was going to cheat on his lt's exam and have Richard take it for him....

i agree with the last post - this shouldn't have been the season finale. while still an ok episode, i wasn't riveted like i was the others. best scene of the season is still Tommy at the bar taking $100 shots of whiskey and giving the speech which ends wtih "I just saw my dead son on a bus." he better win the emmy just for that one ep!
I wish they had included a story line where Jerry calls the police on the illegal bitch who wouldn't even call 911 before she bailed on him. and I still think the Franco daughter plot line is ridiculous, although she is precious - who lets a stranger take their daughter, even if you had taken her illegally too! my brain hurts.
anyways, i hope sheila makes it through, just so Tommy can feel more guilt ridden - obviously sheila will move back to NY and suffer watching Tommy and Janet get back together "for the sake of the kids."
and by the way - to post #5 - that wasn't our probie in the firehouse in the flashbacks - that was Sean and Franco as probies.

I thought the whole scene after the fire started was very lame. Granted Sheila was likely drunk, but give me a break. She was married to a firefighter, has a firefighter in the house (although incapacitated).
She throws an oil lamp at the wall, can't use a the fire extinguisher, needs to go outside to the car to call 911 (why was the cell pnone in the car?), then makes her way back into the house only to fail at getting an unconscious Tommy out.
She likely will die because of all of this. It's obvious Tommy won't.

Oh, please, would you get a life. Just watch the show and enjoy it and stop with faux TV critic stuff. In Tommy Gavin's words, "That's 'cee' with a 'P'".

Was it just me or did Sheila really contemplate leaving Tommy to die in the burning house? When she ran outside she got in her car screamed and cried like he was already dead and then after a few seconds decided to call 911. I think she figured if she couldn't have him, no one could. I feel bad for her because she loves Tommy and he doesn't love her back but she has completely lost it. I love Tommy and realize haw flawed he is, but he knows exactly what he's doing to Shiela. I don't think he ever had any intention of really moving in with her. As for Janet, I don't understand why she has to move in with Tommy to "make it look good". Why can't she just say she is pregnant with Johnny's child (even though it might be Tommy's). Everybody knew they were together and let's face it: I think the Gavin's gave up on caring what other people think about their family a long time ago. It aggravates me to no end that Janet just busts up in his house and starts making decisions like she never left and hooked up with Tommy's brother. She just assumes that Tommy will tkae her back. Besides, I got the impression that Tommy doesn't want to get back together with her because he said he would take care of them and that he loved her but he never actually said she could move back in. Thoughts anyone?

rvkey: I think he actually said she shouldn't move in. She made the request and he said "No, that's not going to work." The reason he gave was because he is moving.

So when is next season supposed to start? And also whatever happened to Timo Gavin, the other Gavin Brother, played by Chase from 24. Was he just a stand-in for Johnny because Dean Winters wasn't available. Or is really another Gavin brother who has just mysteriously dissapeared? Why wasn't he at Johnny's funeral? (My theory was is that Timo is Johhny, they just recast the role for a few episodes)

Ok, what is up with all the feeling bad for sheila. She is a psycho bitch who use what ever can to get Tommy. She is a bad person, not to say Tommy is, but he has so redeemming qulities. But as far as I'm concern Sheila has got to go. A couple of weeks ago she drug tommy and makes him think he got drunk and blacked out, not to mention rape him. I hope they never get together agian. As for the rest of the crew I think the episode did a good job resolving most issue, can't resolve them all or the show would be over.

I got an inkling that Sheila was becoming dangerously unhinged in the episode where she first spiked Tommy's drink. At the time I tought, "She's capable of turning on the gas and going to bed" at this point--taking Tommy out as well. So, an interesting plot turn to say the least!
I too wonder if Sheila will die in that fire. Or maybe be horribly burned (and disfigured), giving our anti-hero still more to feel guilty about?
And yes, that Janet is a cold, hard user.

I agree with the comments about the finale being weak, especially compared to the episodes preceding it. They should have ended the season with Johhny being shot and Jerry on the floor... could've been a great cliffhanger. The whole fire at the beach house was a lame device to come up with a cliffhanger, yet they wasted the best one a couple of shows earlier. Even so it's still the best written, funniest show out there.
