ABC likes what Jimmy Kimmel has been doing for their late-night schedule. They especially like the fact that, during the 2005-06 season, Jimmy Kimmel Live increased its audience by about 6%, which is pretty decent for a show that airs after midnight. So, to reward the comedian turned talk-show host, the network has renewed Jimmy Kimmel Live for a fifth season. That keeps the former co-host of Comedy Central's The Man Show on the alphabet network through 2008.
According to Andrea Wong, the executive vice-president of alternative programming, specials and late-night at ABC Entertainment (must be a humongous business card), Kimmel represents the future of late night television. She went on to say that Jimmy offers the network great creative strength, which is shown in his growing audience. This is most likely the opposite of what ABC executives thought when the show aired three-and-a-half years ago. During the first few weeks of the show Kimmel allowed the audience to imbibe in alcoholic beverages, which caused a bit of a panic at the network.
In addition to the renewal, Jimmy Kimmel Live will get its own one-hour primetime special this fall called Jimmy Kimmel Live's All-Star Salute to Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Scheduled to air at 10 p.m. on September 13th, the special will include show highlights, comedy sketches, and musical guests.

You know, with the exception of the insufferable Jay Leno, I think all the guys who do late night talk are pretty damn good. I'm glad that, as a viewer, I have this cornucopia of comedians to choose from before I go to bed.
And yes, "This Week In Unnecessary Censorship" always scores.

I LOVE Jimmy Kimmel! I like the fact that Jimmy's on at midnight. I turn him on because most of the good Letterman stuff is over by then ... monologue, Top Ten, Rupert Gee schtick, etc. Jimmy's show is a scream.

Wonderful! ABC went about full decade without a late-night talk show before Jimmy Kimmel (does anybody remember the lame, defunct 1990-1991 Into The Night With Rick Dees?) And now Kimmel's renewed for a fifth season through 2008! He has gotten better with his show; he's ditched some of the dumb stuff that he did in the past. Leno's kind of gone south the past few years. Letterman's good, but he's gotten stagnant as of late. But Kimmel's monologues have become funnier, the jokes in the writing department feel fresher and the comedy skits are hilarious. He has better musical guests sometimes than his competition, a mix of pop artists, aspiring rock bands and edgy rap artists.

I really liked when the show first started and he had a guest co-host for a week every week. It was fun to see the interaction between Kimmel, the guests and the co-host. Anyone remember Mike Tyson co-hosting for the week? That was great comedy! Anything could happen w/Tyson there. They also had Andy Dick and few others that were a lot of fun to see on the coach during the whole show.
Betweem the 2 other big late night shows Kimmel seems to have a touch time getting guests. Kimmel has mentioned this on his show and has said in interviews they have a tough time getting guests and even at one time couldn't even get ABC guests. I can't take it one more time seeing Adam Carolla, Kevin Nealon, David Alan Greer or one of the "I can't get a guest so we'll throw this actor/comedian in for the 20th time."
I don't watch Kimmel for the guests though. The best part about the show is that they don't tape until the evening so when the other late night shows are taping at 4pm Kimmel has fresher material for that day's events. i like the first 20 minutes of the show the best where he recaps a lot of pop culture type of events.

The best guest co-host - after Mike Tyson, of course - was Snoop Dogg. Snoop co-hosted when they still let the guests and audiences drink and Snoop got hammered all week. He was hysterical!

I didn't give this show a chance during that first year, but yes, I actually tune Letterman out at 12:05 and flip over to Kimmel for a bit. He's been really good.
