The Sci-Fi Channel confirmed the other day that Stargate SG-1 has been canceled. But now comes word that MGM and producers are hoping that another network picks up the show. Ratings have dropped, but the show still gets around 2 million viewers a week.
MGM spokesman Jeff Pryor: "We do have plans. This is not the end of the Stargate franchise. This is just the end of [Stargate SG-1] on the Sci-Fi Channel."
But that quote just confuses me, because saying it's not the end of the Stargate "franchise" makes it sound like they might make a third Stargate show.

MGM has been toying with the idea of a 3rd Stargate series for at least a year now however at this point I dont think the franchise is ready for it.
The US is not the only market that gets Stargate, it just happens to be the first usually. Worldwide the franchise does really well and MGM knows this. What they need to do is do a 6 part mini series and finish up the Ori story line. Let season 10 end in a cliff hanger and then produce the rest straight to DVD (all fans would buy it) THEN consider a third series.
Dont send anyone from SG1 over to Atlantis. That show is finally hitting its stride and doing well. Perhaps AFTER SG1 gets finished properly let Daniel go to Atlantis for research but keep him in guest star status.

This came from Wikipedia - "However, this announcement of the series cancellation is innacurate. MGM/Sony hold the rights to the series and the Sci Fi Channel merely order episodes from MGM. As of the present time, no network or company has ordered new episodes of SG-1, so the show is effectively on hold, until a new buyer can be found. MGM has expressed a desire to continue the series, but an avenue has not yet been found."
I know Britain's SkyOne and Movie Central (Western Canada) and The Movie Network (Eastern Canada) order SG-1 and Atlantis eps, and they all roughly air eps around the same time.
I can see MGM getting an order for SG-1 on SpikeTV or maybe even F/X. THe series is lucrative for them globally. I mean if you really think about it, 10 seasons; the show was doing something right (my opinion is the elimination of BSG and the late timeslot on Friday nites during the summer tanked the ratings; not Tivos and internet downloads).
As for the other Stargate spinoff; the rumblings have been getting stronger and stronger over the past year (MGM was sniffing around Stargate-Horzon for ideas late last year).
SG-1 still has gas left in it. I can see the show succeeding at least into an 11 and 12th season with a lead-in to a new Stargate series. Sci-Fi might have just pulled a FOX.

I can easily foresee SG-1 running for a few more years, as I think the new storyline and cast are finally hitting their stride. Plus, I really hate to see a storyline cut off too soon.
Shame on you Sci-Fi, for getting rid of a decent show that's always done you right.

Just look back at Farscape. They did pretty much the same exact thing.

It's kind of sad to hear that Stargate SG-1 is going to be cancelled, but I can't really blame them. The show went downhill at season 9 (I didn't really like Vala, although she did add some humor) with the loss of Richard Dean Anderson. Yes the characters are nice, but the storyline is sort of just...floating. I agree with Season 10 being finished up, leaving the ending for the DVD boxed set, but then let SG-1 rest in peace.
Stargate Atlantis, however, is going quite well, with new villains - though what are they going to do when they run out of Ori and Wraith? I guess that's still a season away, or so. The characters, at least, still have a lot of growing room to expand into - as well as the rest of Atlantis to explore!

Stargate could stay on forever at this rate, every five years just switching networks. (Its first 5, remember, were on Showtime.)

There is a thought: If MGM really likes the show and makes money with it they could go with other partners outside of the US (e.g. Canada), push it out globally on iTunes and concentrate on DVD sales.
The fan base may be strong enough for this, not to forget that iTunes could use some content for International distribution. Now there would be an opening.
I wonder if they take it? Alternativly they could bring it straight into syndication and bypass the original airing right away, and in turn put out DVD sets right away.
People's watching habits have started to change over the last five years and the market may just be ready to support an approach like this.

If SG-1 is cancelled, then what about the contest that SciFi is sponsoring? It is stated that the winner will have a walk-on role on BOTH SG-1 and SG Atlantis. I am not surprised that the SciFi channel is thinking about cancelling SG-1. Look what they did to Farscape! Also what is up with wrestling? Where does it fit in on the SciFi channel?

I wager $5 that SpikeTV and G4 will compete against each other to win the cable rights for more seasons.

SG-1 is done. It has gone downhill since RDA left. And the stories are just plain tired and repetitive. Please, let this tired horse rest.

What was the per-episode budget of SG-1? It surely was cheap-looking (not to mention stupid and repetitive), but was it cheap? That seems like money which could be deployed toward better science fiction television, like a second and additional seasons of Firefly, which drew four million viewers on Fox as compared to two million for SG-1 on SciFi. Wouldn't Firefly be a better investment and bigger draw?

I think that SciFi channel goofed this year with SG1. I missed many episodes as they were cramming so many REPEATS of SG1 that both I and my ReplayTV missed many of the new episodes (I thought they were another line of repeats).
I managed to get the 200th ep as this was well advertised. That a strage ep that was. Seems like the writers were spoofing SciFi channel for all the missunderstandings.

Ten season's of episodes Is quite remarkable. SG-1 should be able to continue on. If, foer no other reason ,maybe perhaps it can or should develop its own Cable Channel. Other alternative avenues ,depending on negogiations and Money , go to the internet with weekly vignettes, downloadable Ala like Eureka has done, with a net only episode base. I would go for that.

This should be Stargate SG-1's final season. The series died 2-3 years ago. The writers have simply run out of ideas. Let the show rest in peace.

At first, I was pleased to hear of a third...but not anymore...I don't think it will work. Not with Atlantis getting more and more boring. KEEP STARGATE SG1 ALIVE. Surely someone else will want to pick up the show. It is too good to die...

Whats happening with the ori? For some reason you don't bring the story to a conclusion. It seems every week that you get involved with some other story that's not as interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if your ratings go down during these other episodes I say this with all due respect, I happen to enjoy your show. Today's program 8/25/06 your program at sixpm, stargate SGI, was boring, it wasn't fun I thougth that it was to inverted.

SciFi you are a low-life scum sucking dogs!! I cannot believe you would cancel a great show and earn the ire of loyal scifi fans such as myself and my husband and 1,999,998 other fans. The new cast has melded and we are excited to see how the Ori are put back in their place. Please change your corporate minds!

I love Stargate SG1 and look forward to seeing it as often as it is on. I am sorry to see SciFi cancelling the program as they have just cancelled me as a viewer. I miss Richard Dean Anderson but still love the caracters of Samantha Carter, Teal'c, Doctor Jackson and all the other caracters. I hope some other channel in my cable package will pick it up. I plan to buy the DVD's so I can watch it forever.

Whats going on! just what nut jobs are running scifi channel they drop one of the great programs of our time (SG-1), but they pick up programs that have nothing to do with science fiction,ie: ECW, and RAW. I for one will stop watching scifi channel when they stop showing SG-1
