Yeah, I'm confused by that headline too.
Since there are so many changes at Food Network (Rachael Ray devoting more time to her syndicated show, Molto Mario being canceled, the ratings dropping for many of their top shows), the channel is trying to attract younger viewers and challenge competitors by introducing Paula's Party, which Post-Gazette.com describes as "more Romper Room than Cooking With Master Chefs."
Sorry, but that sounds ridiculous to me. Deen is a kind, 59 year-old Southern woman. I don't want to see her talking about sexy footwear (as she did during an episode taping), officiating crab races (as she did during an episode taping), or interviewing rapping skateboarders who wear iPods (OK, that hasn't happened yet, but give the show time).
Then again, the article above says that Deen smokes cigarettes and named her crab "Cocaine Connie," so this could get interesting. Like some wild, nutty grandma who also knows how to cook. But I'm not convinced this will work.
If they're not careful, Food Network will turn into the MTV of cooking channels: a cooking channel that actually has very little cooking on it.

At least they still have Alton Brown...Too bad they p*ssed off Anthony Bourdain so much when he was working for them--he could've been a big star for them. Now he's a major player on The Travel Channel (and hosts the only show I watch on that network).

This just sounds so insane! If younger viewers is what they want, they are gonig about it totally wrong!
This summer I have gotten hooked on Alton Brown. And have also found that most everyone else I know loves him as well.
Oh. I'm also a college student, as are my friends.
Rambling on about inane things by people "youngsters" can't relate to and don't care about doesn't get repeat viewers. Presenting information that they want to know (such as cooking) in a way that is interesting and memorable does.
Also, a show like mentioned in the article won't sell more cookbooks.

If they want younger viewers they need to expand on the last few minutes of Feasting on Asphalt. Alton Brown road around with an off duty police officer who took Alton to all the great places to eat in Hawthorne, Ca. It was one of the funniest moments, especially on Food Network. The police officer LOVED his food and Alton Brown's personality made it great. They should have Alton go from town to town across the nation with a cop to find the best food. Then he could hit all the fire houses and have them cook their best recipe so we can not only learn a great recipe that could feed over 10, but be able to see hot guys doing the cooking.

Let the chefs do their own thing. Paula's show now is her niche. She is a southern host in a southern kitchen. When Emrils show shifted to being infront of a live audince, he really shined. Alton Brown is wonderful in his element of being very educated, a little quacky, but great to watch. Cancelling Mario was a mistake, he knew alot about the regions of Italy and really trained and cooked. I will miss that...

I think that Ham on the Street is their best new show. The host -- George Duran - is a bit eccentric and funny. The show is like Good Eats, but with a less science and more funny (e.g., he does a lot of man-on-the-street interviews and taste tests).
In a recent show, he played a game where people randomly picked a jelly, a bread, and a cheese and he made them the sandwhich. Suprisingly, most people liked what they tasted.

Paula wouldn't be the best role model. She intixicates throughout the show. By the end of the episode she's toasted, after having some form of alcohol with each serving.

I really enjoy Paula Dean. I particularly miss her precious dog, Maggie, who was always under her feet. It made the show heart warming. I also loved her show where she and her husband visited England and France. It was first class, brought tears to my eyes, and I felt that I was traveling with her learning about the food and people in the two countries.

October 1, 2006, show was great - where is the receipe for Fried Plantains with the spicy Salsa? I love your show but leave out boxed cakes, canned this and canned that - I learned that in cooking 101.
Thanks,
Lucille

Ok, so Paula uses a bit too much butter for my everyday cooking, but I love her, as does my mom and sister! She is so fun to watch. And if younger viewers is what Food Network is trying to attract with her it is working in my family.
My 2 1/2 year old neice, when given the choice of cartoons or miss paula, it is paula dean all the way. Really. Ask her, "cartoons?" or "paula dean?". She will burst our "Paula Dean!" without hesitation.
And she better learn how to cook quick, cause my sister is bringing home her TRIPLET sisters this weeked. :)

My husband and I have been Paula Deen fans since she first set foot on FoodNetwork...clear back to Gordon Elliott's show Door Knock Dinners where she was a guest chef. Unfortunately, her fame and fortune have taken away her down home southern belle class and replaced it with arrogance, flash, and risque behavior. My husband says if he were Michael, he'd put his foot down about some of the things she does on her show (i.e. licking a guest's mouth to get some food off his lips, hopping into bed with an engaged couple, rubbing a guest's hair and commenting on how hard it was and laughing her now-irritating laugh.
Paula, you had a huge fan-base before you started acting like a southern tart. If you ditch the trash talk and smutty behavior, you'll see we're still right there behind you loving you each step of the way. But your new ways grew old and tiresome very quickly. Get back to basics! You shine brighter than the biggest diamond!
