Update: Sanz, Parnell, and Thompson off SNL

To update Joel's post from yesterday, it looks like we now know what Saturday Night Live cast members have been let go, and which one just got a promotion.
Check it out: the L.A. Times says that that Horatio Sanz, Kenan Thompson, and Chris Parnell (seen on the right with Andy Samberg, who will stay with the show) are gone. At the same time, Jason Sudeikis has been given the Weekend Update slot vacated when Tina Fey went off to do 30 Rock (with another person who left SNL, Rachel Dratch). Looks like Amy Poehler will be taken off the Weekend Update segment. They're still negoiating with veteran cast member Darrell Hammond.
What do you think of these changes? I won't be sad to see Sanz go. His outbreaks of laughter were funny the first 12 times, not so much after that.

Damn, I'll miss Tina Fey and Rachel Dratch a lot. But Parnell has been a "hanger-on" for a while now. While I like Horatio, the only funny skits he has been a part of lately is the Amy Poehler(ah, I love her) "wired and off the wall" kid. Finesse Mitchell should have got the boot instead of Kenan. At least Kenan can be funny. Finesse just sux!

I've always liked Darrell Hammond but I think for the good of the show he should be shown the door. The writers rely on him too much and his absence will force them to be more creative and come up with new ideas. How many "Hardball" opening skits does the show need? (The answer is two: The unfunny first time and an unfunny second time to show that the first one's having been unfunny was not a fluke.) Of course it's possible that with Hammond gone the writers will just ask who amongst the remaining crew can do a Keith Olbermann impression and we'll be treated to a dozen "Countdown" skits to open the show over the course of the season....

I guess Darrell Hammond's inspiration to stay as long as possible is the post-SNL career of Dana Carvey?

I read on another site that Finesse Mitchell was doing a stad up routine in LA and announced he was no longer on SNL, either. I don't ecall if he has been metioned or not here as the fourth to get the old heave ho, but I believe he did.

I loved the two people on the Weekend Update desk. It makes it more funny, because they could play off of each other and I loved Amy Poehler there. I don't know what I think about Jason Sudeikis, a newbie, taking over the desk. I mean it could be great like Dennis Miller or it could suck like...Brad Hall *shudders*

Of course, it worked out for Brad Hall anyway (he married a coworker, remember?).
But Chris Parnell has had his run-ins with authority. Too bad, he was a real talent. Kenan not so much, and I really wanted to like Horatio...

I'd be okay if they sacked everyone. With a couple of exceptions, the show was coasting all year. Unfunny characters got ridden into the ground, formerly talented cast members (Amy P) seemed to be sleepwalking, and most of the comedy came from the "louder is funnier" school of comedy.
My suggestion is to start doing more taped bits and rely less on the "live" part, which has added little to the mix since its inception.
And what's the deal with the writers? There is so much ripe for parody these days and they write the 48th Carole or Debby Downer sketch?

Let's hope the ones let go saved money.
I hate Keith Olbermann like the next person. If SNL did him, they would try to make him seem rational. What would be funny is if K.O.'s toupee would fall off in each skit when he gets excited with his neocon conspiracy stuff.

Brent is obviously a complete idiot. Keith doesn't do any of that neocon conspiracy stuff.

SNL is like Laugh-in, it stayed around too long. I think the whole show should be cancelled.

It's funny how some of you are glad to see the black people leaving the show. I think all of them were funny.

What does Crutnacker mean? HELLOO!! The show has been live since its "inception" in 1975!!! With the exception of the fake commercials and other bits, LIVE is kinda the point of Saturday Night LIVE. As for the castoffs, I love Chris Parnell. It's a shame he hasn't been given more to do lately. I didn't know about his legal troubles though. I won't miss Keenan and Horatio - they are Ho Hum. I always thought Kel Mitchell was way funnier than Keenan when they did "Keenan and Kel." Why can't they keep Amy Poehler on Weekend Update as co-anchor? She's great there!

Okay AmericaSimmons..why do u gotta make it racial? Why is it that people say "hey, I don't care for this guy" and just because he's black, you bark because of that? Hey, maybe if you get over it and stop making comments like that, other people will too. There are white people leaving the show too and people are just as glad about that..i don't see you pointing that out.

Good riddance! Sanz has been dead weight from the beginning......not funny, not one time. The whole show was awful last season except for Darrell Hammond. If he leaves I may quit watching all together, and that is a 25 yr old habit to break.

Parnell wasn't funny. I cannot even place Kenan Thompson, so he left no impression on me whatsover. I found Sanz performance to be funny in some sketches.

Ever since Jimmy left it has been a big adjustment for my family, but being die hard fans we've been trying to hold on and now we find out that some more people we love are leaving....yikes!!!! I hope Lorne has found some new and extremly talented people to set the show back on fire! We don't want the show to end.
