Take a good look at these people. They seem strong and content right now, but in a few months they're going to be dirty, emcaciated, irritable, and just a little bit evil. It's that time of year again, kids: meet the new cast of Survivor!
CBS.com has some details about the cast of the 13th (!) edition of the show, which will take place on the Cook Islands, but not many. Among the cast, we have a boxer/waitress, a volleyball instructor, a guitarist in a heavy metal band (can you identify him in the picture? It's hard, I know), a nail salon manager, and someone who is being called an "actress/rollergirl." The teams in this edition will be divided by race (I shit you not; read about it here), which has been generating some controversy, but there aren't too many more twists that Mark Burnett can come up with at this point. I might actually tune in for once, since I haven't watched the show since Richard Hatch won. How's he doing, by the way?

Survivor is the only "reality" series I watch, and I'm kind of getting tired of it although I still enjoy it more than I'm willing to admit. I'm sure the race division will annoy some people, these days it's hard not to annoy someone no matter what you do.
Maybe we can find out what prison Hatch is in and find out how he is, but the only thing I need to know about him is he isn't on the TV any more. Good enough for me.

Maybe they should just call this "California Edition" rather than Cook Islands. 13 out of 20 contestants from California? The great thing about Survivor is it's always been a pretty good cross-section of America. Now it just looks like they cut their casting budget in half.

It should be Survivor: Racist Islands.
They are dividing the contestants into 4 tribes of 5.
Each tribe will be separated by race.
(i.e. All the asians in one tribe)
I'm not sure if this is a good idea.
If they wanted diversity, they should have mixed up the players.

Wait! Was that a shark I saw??? Whew, looks like they jumped it....
I definitely support the diversity push. Not too many places are a homogeneous as Survivor would have you think. But come on - a race war? I realize it's not world peace the contestants are trying to win but I kinda feel like we've regressed several decades...And I don't buy the lame excuse that the winner will have to prove "integration" with the other ethnicities. I just HATE the premise! It's leaving a really bad feeling for me....

erroneous_nick, Hatch is currently an inmante of:
FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION
MORGANTOWN, WEST VIRGINIA
FCI Morgantown, WV currently houses minimum security male inmates.
FCI Morgantown is located in north-central West Virginia, on the southern edge of Morgantown, off State Highway 857 (Greenbag Road).
Judicial District: Northern West Virginia
I Googled him. I also discovered he's doesn't care for prison wear rules i.e. "Inmates shall be fully clothed at all times except when showering." Awwwwww ...

Um...thanks Samantha for that address. :-)
After reading Chris's statement about 13 of 20 contestants being from California, I think I'll pass on this season. I'm fed up with all this "California centric" television. There's 49 other states with a lot more interesting people than what will probably be posers and actor-wannabe's.

Laura if you were BORN in AMERICA you are an AMERICAN with Mexican descent. If you born in Mexico and now are a Citizen of the US, YOU ARE an American again with Mexican descent. I don't know you and don't want to insult you either.
But my statement is pretty much on the money. Just look at WORK, look at SCHOOL, all LEVELS. There is still a DIVIDE in this country. I have friends that are of different backgrounds and cultures but it's still them and theirs and me and mine. That's what I see and I live in one of the most diversified of the country.
Whites still hang with Whites, blacks with blacks and so forth. All you have to is OPEN your eyes I know you see it.
And an Anglo is for a term used for the English, not Americans is that what you mean?

Will bashing occur? Hmmm ... possibly. I guess I could say probably, but I would imagine the people behind the show at least heavily ATTEMPTED to get the more open types for their show. Of course, when put under certain types of circumstances, the true colors of people come out. Perhaps that's what the producers want - but are they SURE they can handle the repercussions of that type of situation? I don't know.
Damn sensitive ass country. If they split the teams up by men & women, then there would be sex bashing, but of course no one would care. Thanks to our horrible past, now everyone's all sensitive. Which is why me & my multiethnic group of friends - who LOVE making over-the-top jokes about racism - will probably NEVER be on tv. LOL

Okay everybody, take a deep breath and repeat outloud. It's only a TV show. It's only a TV show. It's only a TV show. Feel better?
The producers of Survivor should have joined some of the TVS chats last season. There were great suggestions to spice it up. I liked the idea of having 2 games of survivor running simultaneously with twins - just to see if the same person won each game.
There was also the suggestion of Extreme Survivor which would involve more difficult challenges and the contestants could raid each other's camps; Armed Forces survivors where the USMC, USN, Army, USAF and Coast Guard all have representatives competing against each other; and simultaneous dual game of all men in one game and all women in the other.
There are lots of ways to keep this game fresh. Too bad the producers can't come up with anything good.

If racial diversity was really the issue, there was a perfect way to do it. All they had to do was make teams with one member of each race on each team, and leave it that way throughout the contest. i.e. Let's see what happens when no one has the ability to join alliances along purely racial lines. Maybe, just maybe, individual bonds would have formed that would have overcome skin color -- now we'll never really know. But then, this is Hollywood, after all. Why would anyone expect other than shallow pandering?

i just realized i never commented on the show itself - it's a great marketing ploy that will probably generate new viewers and bring back others that had stopped watching - at least until the groups start shifting.

I could care less about Survivor, but the fact that this has been turned into a Racial issue is ridlculous. I was almost violently ill when I saw the CNN QuickPoll where almost 48% of people thought it was "racist". Are you all Politically Correct Idiots out there? So what if they put blacks with blacks and asians with asians? At the end, they will all come together for your liberal, pansy-attitide needs in several mixed-race tribes.
SO WHAT?!?!?!?!?!

wow I was expecting an interesting twist but not this. I kinda like the idea of teams divided by race because it seems like it will make a lot of conflict between teams and that seems like it will make them work harder against each other and that makes for great reality tv!

What is next for ole Mark? Pedophiles against children? Skinheads against...well, anybody who isn't white? Rapist against women? It all happens in real life, but it's absolutely stupid to promote such ideas, which is what Mark is doing with racism. It's not a joke, and it shouldn't be a theme for a game show! Can we say "desperate". This one is going to bite him in the butt...as well as the advertisers. I will not support any advertisers for this show, and I hope America has enough sense to do the same. Racism isn't a game...it's a divisive curse on society that should be discouraged, not promoted as a game show!
