(S01E09) In this episode, the KHBX news team are given a timeslot early Sunday mornings to do whatever they want, so they decide to create a daytime talk show for reporter Kevin Beekin. Before all of that, however, they shoot a segment outdoors with a roadside clean up crew. Since the garbage on the road isn't "reading" on the cameras very well, they actually take garbage out of their van and throw it on the side of the road, much to the consternation of the woman in charge of the clean up.
There first plan of action concerning the new talk show is to discuss some ideas with a PR person. They mention things like interviewing John McCain while Kevin is sitting on an elephant, and Alan gets the idea to actually pull pranks on animals, such as putting kittens inside of a dog house.
Finally, the show, titled "Beekin and Eggs" is ready to tape. Of course the guests and audience have no idea they're part of an elaborate gag. Marty comes out and tries to warm up the audience with some really lame jokes, and when Kevin comes out his opening monologue is just a repeat of all the jokes Marty already told. The audience has also been instructed to clap whenever the "Applause" sign is turned on, so naturally the sign is turned on arbitrarily throughout the show, whether something applause worthy is being said or not.
Back in the control room, Alan loses interest in the show and starts watching his favorite show, That's So Raven. He talks about being in the grocery store and sometimes thinking to himself, 'that's so Raven' or 'that's not very Raven.' Tillie and Marty come in to ask why they've been on one camera for over seven minutes, and they too get lost in the Raven episode. Marty sums the episode up thusly: "That's so very typical of the behavior I've come to expect from Raven."
Meanwhile, Kevin is unhappy with how the show is going, and Marty suggests that when Kevin gets angry he should imagine whoever he's angry at is in their underwear. This prompts Tillie to ask Marty if he's ever imagined her without a bra, which leads to a discussion about the actual size of her areola, which is allegedly so big Marty calls it "Areola 51."
The only two guests who agree to be on "Beekin and Eggs" is a PhD and the owner of a gas station. After dead end interviews with both of them, Kevin pits them against one another in a debate over illegal immigration across the Canadian border. The PhD reluctantly participates, and the gas station owner simply smiles and says "I don't know" to everything Kevin asks. The audience applauds throughout the segment, not because they're into it, but because the "Applause" sign keeps flashing.
A pretty funny episode, I though. What I especially like about this show is that in order for it to work, the comedians have to deal with the "real people" in such a way that they never catch on to the fact that it's all a big joke. They have to be able to push their buttons and get a reaction out of them, but if they were to go too far with it, it would suddenly become obvious and the "illusion" as it were would be ruined. Comedy isn't something everyone can do, but this kind of comedy is even harder, and what makes this show so great is how easy they make it look.
Best line: That is so Osama Bin Laden. Will he ever learn?
