Are musicals ready for mainstream television? NBC seems to think so. The network announced that it will air a mid-season reality contest called
You're The One That We Want, where viewers can choose the actors to play Danny and Sandy in a new Broadway production of
Grease. The reality show is based on a British contest called
How Do I Solve a Problem Like Maria? which, you guessed it, cast for
The Sound of Music.
Grease originally debuted on Broadway in 1972 and John Travolta starred in the classic film in 1978. So... exactly what age of audience is NBC aiming for here?

Well, considering that at this moment Grease is probably being performed or rehearsed at any number of high school, college or community theatres around the country, it's still pretty popular.
