I hate summer. I think I mentioned that here before. I'm so happy when September rolls around. The humidity drains away, it starts to get colder, kids go back to school, the holidays approach, I can wear pants again, and, most importantly, the new TV season starts. So many new shows starting, so many shows returning...
Here are the five things I'm most looking forward to in the Fall of 2006.
1. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip: It's from Aaron Sorkin, it's about the inner workings of a television variety show, and it has a terrific cast, so I think this might be the show I've been most looking forward to in years. The pilot was very promising, and if the rest of the episodes are half as good as The West Wing or Sports Night, Monday nights at 10 might be the new night of Must-See TV.
2. Traveler: This is a midseason replacement that might just be the surprise hit of the winter. It's about three best friends who visit a museum, and an explosion happens, leaving two of the friends implicated and on the run. The third friend? He was the one behind it, who framed them...and there's no record that the guy ever existed, not even a single photograph. Ooooooooooooooooo. Could be cool. The previews look great, and it's from David Nutter (The X-Files, Supernatural).
3. TV on DVD: Complete sets coming this fall that will be busting my bank account: Alias, The West Wing, M*A*S*H, Friends. And I'm sure they'll be announcing more soon.
4. The Nine: This is getting buzz as possibly one of the best new shows of the fall. It's solid all around (cast, writing, premise). Besides, I've promised myself to watch anything Tim Daly is in since they screwed him over with Eyes.
5. The shows I'm not going to watch anymore: American Idol, ER, Desperate Housewives. It's going to clear up a lot of my time. Of course, that time is going to be taken up by the new shows I'll be watching, but it's going to be very pleasing not to bother watching these three shows I've gotten completely sick of.

Come on Bob. 2 out of the 5 don't count as real fall picks. At least give a reason why you don't want to watch the shows/replacement shows. As for the DVDs, is the complete set any different from the countless amoutns of reruns of these particular shows on various channels in chronological order? Get a tivo already.

I only have one concern with Studio 60. In so much as I don't know what the series will be like. If you think about it, most of the stuff in the pilot won't be there. The pilot was very much setup in that it introduced an environment then changed it all by bringing in new management - literally. The whole story was about the chaos caused by Judd Hirsch's outburst and how they dealt with it. For the series they're almost starting with a clean slate, I don't have a clue as to where the show will focus. How much will be the show, how much behind the scenes and so on. Obviously Sports Night gives us some idea but Sorkin may have decided to go a totally different way.
I still think it will be great but I don't think the pilot tells us a great deal about the nature of the show from there on in.
I thought Traveler would be pap but I'm definitely intrigued as to where they take it. I definitely want to know what was going on with the van and the guy from the hotel.
The Nine was probably my favourite pilot, although I'm not sure how much they can get out of the whole bank robbery. If they exhaust the material from that or it turns out to not be very interesting we're left with a drama about some people who become friends and that's it.

OK, I'll give you that the pilots for Studio 60 and The Nine were at least promising... Though I'd have to say I'm not that thrilled by either. Traveler, however, was, I thought at any rate, absolutely dreadful. Just phenomenally mediocre. They should do themselves a favor and just re-air the complete run of Nowhere Man :-)

Suggestion for The Five...TV theme songs you don't TiVo through. Personally, Rescue Me, Weeds and Veronica Mars all have theme songs that I resist the urge to FF through when watching. Has nothing to do with the show, its just great music i enjoy listening to every week.

You've missed out 'The Wire'! Surely some mistake.

I enjoyed Jericho and Friday Night Lights Pilots. Jericho is something very different. There is nothing on tV right now like it (maybe LOST). I hope half the fun of watching it will be trying to figure out what went on in the cities. Friday Night Lights is very similar to the movie but not the same. It was shot in the same docmentry style as the movie. I also saw Shark. It will be cancelled before its 4th show. I am giving up on all crime type shows. I just don't care. If I see one more CSI type show I will kill myself.

"The shows I'm not going to watch anymore" -that's a great topic that deserves its own blog post. I'd definitely put ER on that list, and How I Met Your Mother is coming really close to making the list. Barney was great in the first season, but I don't know how long his shtick will last before getting old.

After looking over your Fall picks and then taking a good look at the schedual for this coming season I couldn’t help but add my two cents. Like you I can’t wait for the new season to start. Unlike you I think I might be slightly more of a TV junky, since I tend to have three shows taping most of the time.
So here are the thoughts of this TV Junky about this 2006 Fall season:
My top picks for Mondays are Heroes and Studio 60. Before seeing the pilots on YouTube I was looking forward to these two. After seeing the pilots I’m hooked. Heroes has that Lost mystery thing to it along with your good old fashioned superhero thing. The writing of Studio 60 just leaves me wanting to see more!
Besides these two picks I’m looking forward to How I Met Your Mother, Prison Break, Vanished, and CSI: Miami to round out my Monday nights. I really don’t see What about Brian surviving long against CSI: Miami and Studio 60.
Monday Night Rating Prediction:
1 NBC
2 CBS
3 FOX
4 ABC
5 CW
My top picks for Tuesdays are Friday Night Lights, American Idol, and House. FNL will go well with the football craze, House is always good TV, and Idol really sets the bar when it comes to TV talent shows. Unlike Bob I’m so hooked on Idol that I’m watching Canadian on-line.
Besides these three: Gilmore Girls, Standoff, Help Me Help You, and Nip/Tuck. Gilmore Girls is always good for a laugh, Standoff looks promising, Me Help You looks both funny and smart, and Nip/Tuck keeps pulling new crazy things out of its’ hat. The L&O shows are feeling dated to me these days against fresher shows.
Tuesday Night Rating Prediction:
1 CBS (Winter FOX)
2 NBC (Winter CBS)
3 FOX (Winter NBC)
4 ABC
5 CW
My top picks for Wednesdays are Jerico, America’s Next Top Model, Lost, and Kidnapped. Jerico if written well could be a hit, I can’t get enough of ANTM, Lost just makes you set back and enjoy, and Kidnapped could be the Wednesday action fix (This might end being The Nine, I don’t see both of them making it to a second season. Could their stories even always for a second season?).
Besides these four shows: Criminal Minds and CSI: NY give you make believe detectives a fun filled evening.
Wednesday Night Rating Prediction:
1 ABC
2 CBS
3 NBC
4 FOX
5 CW
My top picks for Thursdays are Grey’s Anatomy, CSI, and Smallville. I’m hooked by Grey’s Anatomy smart humor and romance, CSI still is one of the best detective shows on, and Smallville could be fun this year with its’ Justice League tie-ins.
Besides these three: Ugly Betty, Survivor, and Supernatural all look like fun. I love Ugly Betty’s lead, Supernatural is a fun souped-up Hardy Boys, and Survivor meets my reality TV need for the night. I think Deal or No Deal might have issues this time around.
Thursday Night Rating Prediction:
1 ABC
2 CBS
3 NBC
4 FOX
5 CW
My top pick for Friday is Battlestar Galactica. Who know that a show based off of the old Battlestar Galactica could have such amazing writing, but this show ain’t your daddy’s Battlestar Galactica. Sometimes the writing is so harsh it hurts to watch.
Besides this show: Ghost Whisperer, Numbers and Duets make for reasons to stay home on Fridays. I’m not sure how I’ll like the new best friend on Ghost Whisperer but she’s one of the best actresses out there. Numbers always dials the right number, and Duets looks like a fun or funny time. Duets and Men in Trees will most likely die very painful deaths.
Friday Night Rating Prediction:
1 NBC
2 CBS
3 ABC
4 FOX
5 CW
I don’t have any Saturday picks, since the networks have decided to just ignore Saturdays. Personally, I go out on Fridays and would LOVE for there to be something to watch on Saturdays!!! Therefore, I end-up watching all the shows I tapped over the week that were not my top picks.
My top picks for Sunday are Desperate Housewives, Brothers and Sisters, and The Amazing Race. I think Desperate Housewives will recover this new season from last, Brothers and Sisters could make me miss GA less on Sundays if the writing is done well, and The Amazing Race is always a fun adventure when they actually leave the country. Besides these shows Sunday is always my football night in the Fall.
If I get my dream America’s Got Talent and The Apprentice will crash and burn in the winter.
Sunday Night Rating Prediction:
1 NBC
2 ABC
3 CBS
4 FOX
5 CW
Over all I see ABC having only one new hit Sons and Daughters, no new hits for CW, CBS or FOX, and NBC having four new hits Heroes, Studio 60, Friday Night Lights, and Kidnapped.

I think "Traveler" is going to be very good. I thought the production values of the pilot were very high- very cinematic - and the acting of the three leads was better than I expected (Steven Culp being good is a given). Also looking forward to "The Nine" but not so sure about "Studio 60" - may end up being the overhyped show of the year. I'm *this close* to dumping "Desperate Housewives" after a dreadful second season - and I surprisingly loved season 1 after almost staying away from it completely due to "overhype".
