(S02E08) Once again, another impressive episode. I'm pretty convinced this show can do no wrong. Well... everything about it is wrong, but you know what I mean. Now that they're done exploiting religion, politics seemed like the next best target. Mac started complaining that liquor taxes were killing Paddy's profits and Dee suggested that the guys vote for lower taxes next time the polls are open. Vote?!? What a terrible idea. And politics? "One big ass-blast" according to Mac. But Frank points out that any lowlife can run for office, solicit bribes, and then take the money and run. Genius.
So that's what they did. Dennis ran for the South Philadelphia Zone 2, District 37 Comptroller. Of course, nothing goes smoothly for these people and a fight erupts between Mac, Charlie, and Frank about who's going to be the campaign manager. Charlie wins out, but we learn that he's actually dyslexic and couldn't craft a campaign speech if he tried. (Vote me Dennis, good for taxes lower!)
Frank had some good ideas but Dennis shunned them and Frank convinced Dee to run against her brother. All she had to do was dress up like a giant whore and try to bribe the current comptroller to pay her to not run. That makes sense... right?
My favorite part of the episode was when Mac tried to hustle some worker's union into backing Dennis. I'm not sure how this would have benefited the union, but Mac called them nerds and it was downright hilarious. In the end they blackmailed Mac, because that's what worker's unions are supposed to do right? Shady dealings and back-door meetings.
As usual, the entire episode devolved into a fight with everyone on different sides. Frank and Mac set out to smear Dennis and produced an ad spot depicting Dennis as a baby rapist. Years ago he kissed a girl at camp and she was a year younger than him. Baby rapist. I wouldn't vote for that guy. Dennis ended up dropping out of the race on his own after he Googled "comptroller" and found out what his job description would have been. Math? Numbers? Glorified accountant? No way.
Other things I loved:
- Charlie had a clip-on tie. You could tell because it was hanging on the outside of his shirt-collar. Too funny.
- The guy that played the current comptroller was the same guy that played Walter Resden in that episode of CSI: Miami. I guess all this guy can play is a crazy serial killer or a sleazy politician.
- Hobo-vertising! Great way to get your message across.
- Charlie collects Garbage Pail Kids trading cards.
Best Quotes:
Frank (insulting Dennis' new politician attire): "You look like a dick in that tiny jacket."
Frank (trying to convince Dee to run against her brother): "There is nothing more threatening to a man than a woman who is smart and attractive. We have to pretend you're both!"

I went scrambling for a pen to copy down Frank and Mac's pithy quotes about politics. Glad I was taping it!
Where have I seen the Union assistant before? He looked very familiar in a Les Nessman kind of way.
As soon as we saw the Garbage Pail Kids collection, I wondered how they would tie into the ending; everything ties in eventually.
Well, not everything I guess. I thought for sure his choice of a jacket that was too small for him would come back to haunt Dennis, but that went nowhere.

You also may remember him as Valerie's husband in The Comeback.
But I loved this episode. Last weeks was the first one I wasn't ecstatic about, and it's best when they stay somewhat near reality.
I heart Charlie Day.

2 more great lines:
1. Mac says: Politics is just all one big ass blast.
2. The union guy says: He called us nerds, Gary...nerds.
hilarious. I can't wait to work either one into everyday conversation.
