I was circumcised 6 years ago or so, when I was 34. I bring this up for two reasons: 1.) I don't get enough chances to talk about my penis in public, and 2.) I know it can be a very uncomfortable, painful procedure when you're an adult (yes, as a baby too, but at least when you're a baby you don't have to stand up and work and move around as much, and you won't even remember it).
Joy Behar said on The View today that, as a penance, Mel Gibson should be publicly circumcised, to be welcomed into the Jewish community. Sure, that might be just Payback, but I'll ask all the female readers out there, is that really What Women Want?

And for all the women who have made racist comments, we can cut off their clitoris'. Starting with Joy, there's no doubt in my mind that she has made racist comments.

How would Behar know he's not circumcised? (That is if he's not) But what if he has already been. Does she want them to just start snipping at his tip? Seems a little extreme for making a very controversial statement while under the influence.
What would the female version of this punishment be, say Behar had said something similar?
Joy, it's a two way street you know.

Hello people? The simple facts: The vast majority of Jewish males are circumcised at birth. Behar's suggestion that Mel Gibson be circumcised to atone for his bigoted comments was a *joke* (lame, yes, but still a joke) implying that Gibson be subjected to the same procedure as Jewish males so that he could be more culturally in tune with the Jewish community, and yes, because it would probably hurt like hell to have it done as an adult.
But there is no female equivalent of circumcision in the Jewish culture and there was no racist implication to her comment.

Yeah, it was clearly a joke. But I think a lot of guys get the "Only I can make fun of my little brother" syndrome.
If some joe joshes about johnsons, fine. But when a woman does it? Watch out. Same thing works for gay jokes, fat jokes, black slang, and whatever else is off limits in a PC world.

I dunno, Dave. In this situation I think the Jew thing trumps the guy thing.
And now I'm dying to know why you got your bits snipped, Bob.

Wait a minute, folks. Behar gets to say that about a guy who said some very bigoted stuff, very out-of-bounds stuff, about Jews (I am one, yes). As Obed says, do I get to say that Behar should have a clitoredectomy should she ever in her life be caught saying anything at all similar about 1. any sheygitz שייגעצ(a goyishe male) 2. Whites and/or Asians(because they are the only races left you can make fun of) 3. Christians (the only religion you can disrespect) 4. Straight males (the only sexual orientation you can diss) 5. People from the South and the Midwest (the only regional folks that you can generalize about), and the list goes on. A woman like Behar can hide behind her sex and her Jewishness to say something that, if you look at it honestly, is clearly fascist, which is the last thing we want. If a straight, white, Christian male said Behar should get a clitoridectomy - in jest, obviously, that doesn't matter, however, does it? - he would be reamed from one end of the country to the other. Still don't get it? OK, Pat Boone. Pat Robinson. Jerry Falwell. All well known comedians...OK, this whole thing is just to make a point. Behar is a sexist religious bigot. Obed and Bobbybuz got it right. The others are living with blinders on if they think this statement is perfectly OK. It shows their owno biases, which is exacltly what people who fancy themseves free from bias do all the time.

FYI, Joy is not Jewish, she is Italian. And what seems to be lost here is that she is a comedianne.

What I find extremely offensive is Bob's suggestion that you can do what you like to babies since they "won't even remember it".
It's a pity the weblogs inc. network doesn't have some kind of a twit filter to filter out the *posters*. Perhaps it's time for me to have a look at Greasemonkey...

Kevin you can defend baby penises the world over but that does not have to mean you diss weblogs inc. for one writer's opinion slash light handed(probably joking) comment about circumcision.
anyway, circumcise Mel Gibson as a punishment? I say make him eat gefilte fish as every meal for a month

When did cutting of the foreskin of a man's penis become the equivalent of cutting off a woman's clitoris? I am worried about some of you and your lack of anatomical correctness. She's a comedian, by the way. You don't have to think she's funny, but your anger should probably be examined closely. By a professional.

Thanks, jDub. To all the fans of female genital mutilation - removing a clitoris would be equivalent to removing a penis completely. And because I'm such a classy person, I won't point out that any straight males with this much hatred of females and their anatomy, probably don't get to use their penises often.

Interesting that Joy Behar equated circumcision with punishment. Shades of John Harvey Kellog and a host of other sick and twisted quacks over the years who've promoted genital abuse of children, as punishment for masturbation or as a preventative for a whole bunch of unlikely ailments. Behar should be ashamed of herself for lowering herself to Gibson's level. For someone who bills herself as a comedian, she's not very funny, neither is Gibson.

Bebop,
I would normally read the humour into such a remark, but it wasn't worded as such, and when you look at it in its context, the implication is that since Bob had it done, it must therefore be OK to do it to children. The joke (such as it was) about performing it on Gibson only works because he's caused so much pain and distress to others, so it works on the same level as a revenge-fantasy.
There is a lot more I could say about what the comment implies about the writer, but I honestly don't think it would be true, and it would be unfair to him if I were to try turning this comments section into an emotive diatribe about child abuse. I certainly wouldn't want to go over the top like the people who are equating circumcision with clitorodectomy: That doesn't help the argument at all.
What I am trying to get across is that his own experience in *choosing* circumcision (which I have no problem with) in no way justifies doing it to children who have *no choice* in the matter, and is a traumatic experience (whatever he may think) - It's like the people who say it's OK to beat (as opposed to smack) children because "it didn't to me any harm" (and again, I am not suggesting that this is what Bob thinks, it's just an example).
I just think that as a 40-year old, he should be a bit more mature and thoughtful about making comments like that, as the same philosophy could applied to many different contexts, many of which would probably horrify and disgust him.

Sorry to hear you got chopped, Bob; how did you get suckered into it? Me, like 100,000,000+ American males, I had no choice at all. FYI, I suggest you check out "The Lost List" (http://norm.org/lost.html) to see what you're now missing. It's not trivial.
And for all the women who think male circumcision is "no big thing" (as opposed to female circumcision, which is a major crime -- and I agree on the latter), take a look at "Sex as Nature Intended It" (http://sexasnatureintendedit.com) to learn what you have lost if you ever have a circumcised lover.
As for "Joy" Behar and her remarks: "ekw" covered it pretty well above. Once there were "comedians" who were actually funny. An eleven-foot pole wouldn't be long enough.
For a little sanity on this subject, see a real Jewish comedian (I've never seen him before, but he seems like he might not be half bad) here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gct84oE5DEE.
