(S02E09) This is an early review courtesy of Adult Swim Fix, so don't read if you want to wait until Sunday night to see the episode.
I love Michael Ian Black, but I'm not in love with him. You know what I mean? A person can have everything you want in a comedian, but somehow he just can't turn you on the way you need. You end up having to sneak out at night to get your comedy satisfaction elsewhere, or even worse, you sneak off to the bathroom after he's finished his routine and he walks in and catches you reading a joke book. With a look of mortification and deep personal shame he shouts, "What, I'm not enough for you?!"
I think you know what I mean. Anyway, Michael Ian Black returns to the show to play, oddly enough, a character named Dr. Michael Ian Black, a friend of the Mayor's. The Mayor learns of Tom's Chronic Nocturnal Emissions (which must mean this episode was meant to be shown before this one) and Irritable Semen Syndrome, or CNE and ISS, respectively, and the doctor shows Tom (who he insists on calling "Stephen") a promotional video for something called "Provolanaproxalidamine-C," a drug meant to curb sexual desire that was originally designed as a deadly fox repellent. Of course, if Tom's wife would actually have sex with him he wouldn't have this condition, but we already know that's not how their marriage works.
The video they show Tom is funny, but not nearly as funny as when they mock him for thinking he can afford the medication. So what was the point of showing him the video? Exactly. Anyway, Tom does get a free supply when he decides to become the spokesmodel for the drug, but the fame goes to his head and he ends up losing the deal. Before it all comes crashing down around him, Tom makes a commercial to tout the benefits of the drug, stating, "my sheets, my bed and my wife are all dry again." That's right, an ad where a man brags about NOT being able to get it up. That's comedy gold. Or at least comedy silver. Some kind of valuable metallic element, anyway.
Look for comedian Zach Galifianakis in this episode, and if you can, pause during Tom's commercial to read the fine print. There's some great stuff in there that zips by pretty fast.
