The Sci Fi Channel knows where its bread is buttered. Sure, people love both Stargate shows and the new show Eureka is getting good reviews. But the channel's most popular show is Battlestar Galactica. That's why Sci Fi is reportedly deciding to put all of its original shows on a six-month hiatus so it can run the entire third season of BSG without reruns. The goal, according to programming executive Mark Stern, is to have original programming throughout the year. So, according to this plan, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis will take a break in September and return in March, and BSG's season will run from October to March.More information can be found here. Of course, Sci Fi might change its mind. But this info came from Comic-Con, and if there's any place where you can find reliable information about the Sci Fi channel, it's there.

I'm not entirely sure WHY stargate would take a longer break when BSG and Stargates used to run at the same time. It's not like BSG is going to suddenly produce three hour long episodes. Also I have a strong feeling that the Galactica spinoff is going to run while BSG is off the air, so there will be some form of Galactica on Sci-fi year round.

I for one, after about an hour or two of random thought, think this is definetly a damn good idea on Sci-Fi's part.
Just like FOX made out pretty good with running the 5th Season of 24 non-stop, Sci-Fi is giving them props by doing the same with BSG. They know where the ratings and the ad cash will come from this year, and it's BSG. Check out the YouTube posting of the BSG Season 3 teaser - 55,000 views in 5 days.

Even though both Stargates are showing excellent storylines, production values, and special effects this season; and Eureka does look like a good show; SciFi must know something us fanboys don't about this upcoming BSG season.

I've been BG's biggest fan since it started.
But the last two episodes of season two left me very deflated about the whole series.
The producers beat the odds and created something that's one in a million -- an original, compelling space drama with real characters and real motivations.
Maintaining this quality is a delicate balance -- why throw away everything they've built with that contrived season finale? One year later ... er, everything we've done for two seasons ... yea, just forget about all that stuff. The cylons decided attacking humans was a mistake -- they no longer believe in God -- they just turned around and went home. Er ... wha ... why?
Why take this hard work, sweat and tears, and toss it in the bin? It's possible that Baltar has finally gone over the deep end and this is some kind of Bobby Ewing-esq dream sequence -- but I don't think that would be much better.
Again -- I'm completed deflated by the BG season finale -- frankly, a big part of me could hardly be bothered to tune in this fall for season 3.

I didn't like it when they did this with Farscape, and I'm sure I won't like it when they do it with Stargate. While it is great for BSG to be run in its entirety, the unnatural break in the middle of the season hurts Stargate. Asking people to just drop the show for six months and then remember all the details of what was going on is asking a lot. The audience would have been better served had they thought of this earlier and started Stargate early enough that it could finish its run before BSG started. Ideally they would do 5 months of Stargate, a month of original movies/minis, 5 months of BSG, and another month of movies/minis.

I don't care about Battlestar I stopped watching halfway threw season 2.
I don't want them to screw around with Stargate, just leave it be and show Battlestar after Stargate's season is over. And what is going to happen to Doctor Who? Battlestar better not screw around with that too.

I would rather see a break halfway through Season 3, with a cliffhanger half way through. It worked really well with the Pegasus returning. I worry that the show will be heavy and boring halfway through the season if they don't have something to work towards. I'd rather see 10 this fall, ten next spring.

I think this idea stinks. I realize that there are some that are fans of BSG... i am not... so the idea of a straight season of BSG doesn't intrest me... i guess i won't be watching the SciFi channel for a while... I LOVE stargate and i know that there are many stargate fans out there. I think SciFi is making a HUGE mistake by pushing the stargates back. IF battlestar must continue to be on the air... i don't see why they can't start airing it in October.. and then let the stargates join it in January... like they have aired them previously. I think it will ultimatly hurt both shows... battlestar fans will get burned out and stargate fans will have TO MUCH of a break and will have trouble recalling information and have a hard time picking up in march. This also leads to another problem... if there is a season 11 (and i hope there is) of stargate... then are they going to run the end of stargate season 10 from March til May.. and then turn around and air Season 11 in July... or will the first half of Season 11 then be pushed back to air in October...

While I like Stargate, I think BSG is the stronger show overall (and the majority of fans agree with me). I think if they really show an entire season (Wow 20-odd episodes in a row, what a startling concept) with no repeats, it will be worth it. The only thing is it seems like they could at least keep Eureka on at the same time. Do they really have such limited funds that the only way they can air a complete season at one time is if it is the only show in production? I don't know, but I love BSG, so if it means that it get the entire channel's attention, I am happy about that, as long as the Gates and Eureka recieve the same dedication when they come back next year.

I think this idea is brilliant! It seems(and I hope) that SciFi channel has finally realized what an amazing little show has fallen in their laps. When you have a show that has quietly been at the top of all critics list since its inception, won several awards(including a Peabody), and built a cult following this quickly, you take notice. By giving the two Stargates a six month hiatus, this will allow BSG to "break free" from the two other shows. No disrespect to Stargate fans(I have seen every episode, but fell off the last two years), but "Battlestar" is on a whole other level. I also think this is why SciFi has BSG premiering in October, instead of the "usual" July premieres with the other shows. Look...many critics thought BSG would get an Emmy nomination for best series this year. It didn't happen. But don't you think the top execs at SciFi/NBC/Universal got giddy with the prospect of it happening? A SciFi channel series competing for best dramatic series with NETWORK and HBO shows like "Lost" and "The Sopranos"? It has NEVER happened. But it will next year. Guarantee it.

I think this is a great idea, but the bottom line folks is that a show only has a set number of episodes per season. From what I read they are not making more or taking any away, but rather they are re shuffling them. I for one could not stand the old format where they aired half the season took a break and then aired the other half. It made the season seem too short.
At least this way I get to see a nice long uninterrupted season of my favorite shows. Since I really like Eureka, BSG, SG and SGA, I will always have new programs on.

I am also against this idea. I did not like the original BSG, and only watched 2 episodes of the new BSG, and was not thrilled. I could understand it, if the STG (1 & A) Staff wanted a break, and this was said intead.
I myself am going to tape the BSG shows, so I can see the Commercials, and let those companies know that I will not buy their product until STG is brought back.

I totally disagree with this idea. I am a huge Sci-fi fan, mostly Stargate Sg-1 & Atlantis, Eurika, Ghost Hunters. I tried to watch BSG and never could bring myself to like it (sorry to all that do). If Sci-fi think's it is the strongest show they have, they are highly mistaken. I agree with another's opinion, if Sci-fi does decide to follow through with this decision, I think they will see a big drop in thier ratings, because they are going to loose alot of loyal viewers of thier other POPULAR shows.

You know, this seems like a really, *really* bad idea. I'm just now getting into SGA and SG-1 and if I have to remember to pick it back up MONTHS later, I will forget. I have the attention span of a gnat and dividing a channel over a show is incredibly stupid. There are enough hours in a day to show the episodes, and with the money execs get paid at the studios, I'm sure someone could come up with a better plan.
Seriously, this is like a spit in the face to the viewers. SGA fandom, at least on LJ, seems to be pretty divided over their last episode and it will *not* help their ratings if they do something incredibly stupid like this.
And not to mention that Eureka is just getting it's footing, and if it has to go on a long break it might not pick up momentum again. Hello, common sense anyone? Having a brand new show take a long hiatus is stupid programming choices.
What did they do? Run to Jordan Levin for advice on how to screw up a network? If they did, it's really working.

That works. I can cut off my cable and save some money for the 6 months that the two Stargates are off the air. :-) They can keep that bleedin' night time soap opera called "Battlestar Gallactica". I wasn't a fan of "Dynasty" or "Dallas", I'm not a "Lost" fan, and I'm certainly not wasting my time on the new Galactica.

I don't see why this is such a big problem. In the UK we get like 13 episodes of Doctor Who then a 9 month break!!
It seems to me that it's like having two 10 episode seasons with just six months in between. It still means you'll see the same number of episodes over the same length of time so.....

I do not care for BSG...SG1 & SGA are the only things I watch on scifi channel. And now that O'Neill character isn't in SG1, I only watch the new shows first go 'round...I think it will be a BIG mistake to cut season 10 in half and leave it like that for 5 months. People like me will just lose interest altogether....Why not bring O'Neill back at least on an reoccuring statis? Everyone I talk to really believe the show has lost a lot since Richard Dean Anderson left....talk to him, guys!

UH no! a 6 month break wont make it! just keep the 3 month break! im from the UK and have been living in the US for the last 2 years and i know that the UK usually goes ahead by a few episodes because of the 3 month break and if it goes to the 6month break then everyone will of seen the final episode before it starts up on scifi, which utimatly means that most people are going to download the episodes after they air on sky one in the UK and then the ratings for stargate in the US will drop!

I think this is by far the worst idea in television, and quite possibly human, history. BSG is irrelevant. Many other Sci Fi shows are irrelevant. Let them take the obnoxiously long break. SG1 and Atlantis are going through a rough patch ratings-wise. Regardless, they are both better than ever and WILL find their feet, but only if their new eps are not halted in September, when every other network is rolling out its new fall line up. We've just come out of a pause in new eps, for goodness sake!
Will I continue to watch the show no matter when it airs? Sure, but I'm crazy about the characters and have been since the first. I'd pay by the episode to watch it. I'm terribly concerned, however, that come March, many avid fans and casual viewers alike will have moved on to other programs with traditional seasons.
After all, who wants to watch re-runs (of any show) for six months when you can watch brand spanking new eps instead?
