(S01E03) Shawn almost slipped up. Twice. Both times while talking to the chief of police. Luckily, Gus was there to move him back in the right direction; lying about his psychic abilities to everyone, including the police.

I believe that this is the way Psych will run for the time being. Shawn will slip up here and there with the people that he admires . . . people that Shawn believes (deep down) know that he's really not what he says. For others, including Detective Lassiter, he'll keep on pretending that his psychic seizures are real.

I really enjoyed this week's show. After testing the waters in the first two programs both Shawn and Gus really did some heavy detective work this episode. For the first time since the show began Shawn didn't rely on his photographic memory as much as he had in the first few episodes. Instead, he relied more on the detective skills his father had taught him to pull together all the clues. This was good, because it showed that Psych could be more than just a one trick pony every week.

It was also good to see that Shawn's reputation as a crime-solving psychic is spreading to the general public. This is giving him some kind of respectability and allowing for more cases to come his and Gus' way. This also allows him to really work his psychic mojo on the unsuspecting public. One thing I did notice this week about Shawn's 'psychic' spells: when he goes all psychic with Detective Lassiter he looks like he's holding onto a live electric wire. However, when he has his spells with other police officials and members of the public his moments are a bit more mild. I guess that he wants to give a good show for Lassiter.

This was a very good episode for both James Roday and Dule Hill. Roday was really channeling more of the Ben Stiller in him then the Tom Cruise as he had a bit more of that manic personality in him this week. We also found out that, well, Shawn is a bit of a weakling and has a fairly low threshold of pain. This was also Dule's week to shine as Gus as he moved away from the sidekick status to become an actual partner to Shawn. The funniest scene of the night was with Gus coming out of a bachelorette party his shirt open, a whipped cream wreath around his head, declaring that he just got a lap dance by Patrick Swayze.

I probably laughed more this episode than during the first two, which is a good thing. This means that Psych is finally settling into its niche and, hopefully, will only get stronger from here.
