For the first time ever, ESPN is going to show The World Series of Poker while the event is still going on. It won't be live or even same day, but it's a big change from previous years, when they would show the event a few months after it was over. Coverage starts Tuesday night at 8.I'm a big poker fan. Not playing it (I'd love to but don't have any friends who are into it and I don't have the balls to enter a tournament), but watching it on television. I would have thought the poker craze would have died out by now, but if anything, the TV coverage is increasing. FOX Sports even has a new show coming up where the players will be housed in some dome, with special cameras set up around the table and heart monitors hooked up to the players.

I had seen the ads on ESPN and was surprised to see it was on so soon. I am also a big poker fan and love to play. I just don't have the nerve to play with my own money. So I play at fulltiltpoker.net for free (they give you credits). All you have to do is download the software.

Don't get too excited. The first five weeks of WSOP coverage will really be coverage of the "WSOP Circuit" events from venues such as New Orleans, Atlantic City and Tunica. So it will still be several weeks until coverage of this years "Main Event" begins. The one thing they're doing different this year is showing the Main Event before they show any of the preliminary events.
This year's Main Event begins on Friday, July 28 and the final table (after narrowing down from likely well over 7,000 players) is scheduled for Thursday, August 10. However, the final table won't be broadcast until September 26.

There are plenty of ways to get a experience playing poker. Most of the online rooms offer .net sites which are entirely play money sites (that way they can advertise on TV which their for money .com sites can't) and a lot of the .com sites like Full Tilt and Pokerstars offer free-roll tournaments where some people can earn a small amount of money for your cash accounts. Tournaments are another good way to learn as you frequently get a lot of play for your entry fee. And while the big TV tournaments are expensive, depending on where you are you can get into a tournament for under $100. In Atlantic City the various casinos offer daily tournaments for around $50 + an administration fee (where the casino makes its money - the entry fee becomes the prize pool for the players) and some are even less. Some casinos even offer instructional classes.
