When I first heard about VH1's World Series of Pop Culture, I decided not to try out. As much of a pop culture whore as I am, I figured that the questions were going into dive into so much minutiae that I was going to be out of my element. I mean, I was expecting questions like "On The Wonder Years, what were the colors of the stripes on Kevin Arnold's gym socks?" or something like that. But then I watched a preliminary round on Thursday night, and I slapped myself in the head. Most of the questions were completely easy! I think the hardest round to me was the one about hip hop artists in the movies, but I at least got a few of those questions, like the movie series that Kid 'n' Play was in (Answer: House Party, which at least one contestant didn't get). Another question: What was the name of Arnold Jackson's fish on Diff'rent Strokes? Even the tie-breakers weren't hard: Name the eight actor's names (besides Ann B. Davis) from The Brady Bunch. As GOB Bluth would say: Come ON! Had I known the questions were going to be this easy I would have applied myself. Between me, my brother Rich, and Bob Sassone, we would have kicked major-league trivia ass. Granted, we would have been older by any of the other teams by a good seven to ten years, but so what? I refuse to be ashamed if a quarter-mil is at stake.

I actually went to NYC to try out for this show, the entrance exam was actually really hard. Much harder than the questions on the show. And the team from thursday's show "We're What Willis Was Talking About" sat next to me in the test. Afterwards they were talking about how they were already in the Pilot episode and had cameras following them around. I call shenanigans.

Since I don't pay much attention to what airs on VH1, this is the first I'm hearing of the World Series of Pop. I must say that it sounds like a very cool show, and I am definitely going to tune in to future eps.

I auditioned in NYC, took the exam which was easy. My team got a top 4 score and proceeded to the interview segment. Alas, we did not make it. By the look of the teams that did, it appears we were too normal.
Watching a little bit here and there does make me a little annoyed. We totally would have classed these people.

Teams were cast for personality. They seem to know some stuff, but probably aren't the cream of the crop. I, too, heard that the preliminary rounds were MUCH harder. They probably dumbed it down for the show so we could play along at home. It's all for ratings folks.

I did the online test but never heard anything back from it. The questions were harder than what I have seen so far on the show. I think 80's lyrics was the hardest group of questions for me so far. I'm glad to see the online team doing well since I didn't make it. It does seem you have to have a funky costume for your team to make it too.

It's the same story here in Chicago. I tried out in March, and our team actually flew through the written test - we all averaged about 40 out of 50.
Then came the interviews, and I knew right then and there that we were doomed. We're just your average, hardworking, quiet, courteous, intelligent, and nice team of midwesterners, but we were definitely not the type of people who knew how to puff up their own egos. It seems like no matter how great you nailed the quiz, if you aren't quirky, eccentric, have wacky stories to tell, or are wearing funny hats, you don't get the callback. It's too bad that VH1 doesn't follow the lead of Scipps Howard - with the National Spelling Bee, it's completely based on what you know, and not if you're wearing a feather boa and standing on your head while doing it.

Is anyone else annoyed that after the "to be continued" semi-final show, VH1 gives away the winner! They tell you who will be in the final before they even finish airing the semi final match. That's just poor promotion.
