(S03E01) What a crazy start to a new season. Already, I've been outraged (I'll explain later). This challenge started almost right after the designers met Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn for a little champagne to celebrate their first day. They were told to create an outfit defining their personality with absolutely anything from their brand new apartments. Armed with scissors and their greedy hands, the designers totally ripped their beautiful apartments into pieces. Shower curtains came down, couches were skinned, lamps were attacked, and cushions were destroyed. Sigh. It looked like so much fun. I was green with envy. Each designer was assigned a model (wow, Runway is focusing less and less on the models with each season) and the guest judge was designer Kate Spade.
Follow along by checking out the designs on "Rate the Runway". On to the designers...
Bradley Baumkirchner, 32, Los Angeles, CA: He used parts of a mattress and comforter to make a dress and wrap (?), respectively. The dress part looked okay, but the comforter wrap creation looked tremendously awkward. There was no shape to it... I was surprised that he was "safe".
Robert Best, 36, West Hollywood, CA: Robert designed for Barbie for the last ten years, which I thought was really cool. For the challenge, he made a very feminine dress (out of a duvet cover and bedsheets) with sparkly beads for embellishments. I loved the contrast between the bright red bows and the pure white. The judges adored him and Heidi named him as one of her two favorites.
Laura Bennett, 42, New York, NY: This woman is a mother of five and yet she looks so put together. She said that she refuses to give into the sweatpants aspect of motherhood. Good for her! She wears her hair slicked back, bright red lipstick on her pale skin, and clothing with very crisp, clean lines. Very sophisticated. So, her Wall to Wall outfit was a really glamorous coat made of a white faux fur rug and some shiny embellishments from a chandelier. It really reflected her personality.
Malan Breton, 32, Long Island City, NY: Haha, Malan Breton, born in Taiwan. It rhymes! After looking at the preview pictures of the designers a few weeks ago, I decided that this guy was going to be my favorite (just because he had kind of a lazy eye in the pics). Maybe it's the laugh, but there's something really creepy about this guy. "Vincent Price"-creepy, I mean. He used a really strange, brown rug to create a lumpy, short jacket. I didn't particularly love it, but it wasn't bad.
Bonnie Dominguez, 31, San Diego, CA: Using some sheets and duvet covers, Bonnie fashioned a strapless dress. I thought it was a nice creation, but it didn't fit her model correctly (her breasts looked ready to make a run for it).
Stacey Estrella, 40, San Francisco, CA: [OUT] She had limited experience in fashion (three years) and didn't know how to work the sewing machines. So doomed. She made an ill-fitting white dress that was a little too sheer at the bottom. It was bad, but not bad enough to be Auf'd, I thought.
Katherine Gerdes, 25, Minneapolis, MN: With garbage bags and a comforter, she made a dress and a futuristic hoodie-cape. I thought it looked quite cool, but not enough to stand out.
Kayne Gillaspie, 27, Norman, OK: He used red rubber mats to create some really cool movement in the back of the dress he created. Although it was well done, it failed to stand out.
Ulrike "Uli" Herzner, 35, Miami Beach, FL: Uli is from Germany! She has an adorable accent... I want to hear a conversation between her and Heidi. Uli used curtains to create a really flowy dress with green bead embellishments around the neck. I liked the unusual color combo.
Alison Kelly, 25, Brooklyn, NY: She used bedsheets to create a mini-dress with creative bunching. I thought it was quite cute, save for a little awkward bunching along the model's front.
Angela Keslar, 33, Amesville, OH: Her creation was hideous. It was a mish-mash of all the wrong things. Random flowers, random belt, random boots. I didn't understand how this was part of the "safe" group.
Michael Knight, 28, Atlanta, GA: This is the guy who everyone's surprised to see on the show. Because he's black and he wears oversized shirts, people like to call him "street" and "hip-hop". Eh, whatever. He created a really, really nice dress out of coffee filters. It reminded me of a flapper dress. I thought it was very well done and was surprised to see that he wasn't one of the top scores.
Vincent Libretti, 49, Santa Monica, CA: Old guy. Gosh. What a Marla. He used to be a working designer, but he peaked in 1988. His design for the challenge was absolutely hideous. The dress didn't fit well and he made his model wear a horrible little basket on her head with large sunglasses. He was so damn excited about that stupid basket hat too. But when the judges called him on it, he said how he was so hesitant about using it. Bullcrap. I was positive he was going to be Auf'd, but the judges didn't even pick him to be a part of the bottom two! I was outraged (these were my exact, copy-and-pasted online chat words: VINCENT IS IN?!!!!!!!1 TTHAT'S NOT COOOOOL. Omg.)
Keith Michael, 34, New York, NY: [WINNER; immunity] Wow, Tim was wrong for once. After seeing that Keith's outfit was made purely from normal-looking fabric, Tim suggested that he add a place mat or something to be a little more appropriate to the challenge. Keith tried it out, but ended up hating it and removing it. He won the challenge even though it was his first time ever making a dress. Very impressive.
Jeffrey Sebelia, 36, Los Angeles, CA: [ALMOST OUT] It's the guy with the neck tattoo. Yeah. Is it just me who noticed, or is his neck abnormally thick? An optical illusion with the neck tattoo? And his eyebrows look like furious little caterpillars. I swear, the man looks like a cartoon. I want to sketch him. Anyway, Jeffrey used loads of different materials to create a dress and jacket. There were a lot of wacky layers, which the judges didn't like. He also made his model do something weird before she started her walk down the runway... She flailed her arms around and all these feathers went flying everywhere. It was very bizarre. Although his creation wasn't excellent and the jacket kind of distracted from the dress, I didn't think he deserved to be in the bottom two. Didn't make sense to me. At least maybe he won't be so cocky now.

From Cynopsis: "Note to Self: Bravo launched Project Runway last evening (which was great!), but in the future, change the channel during the commercial break right before the designers' runway show. Last night Bravo invited viewers to participate in an instant poll - "which of these three designers do you think should go home?", telling us who the bottom three were even before we saw their completed designs! Gee, that's just not cricket. If the network keeps doing that, just make sure you jump to another channel for that part."

Keith, I havent watched the episode yet but Bravo doesn't seem to get the fact about not spoiling parts of the show. I remember last season multiple times in the last commercial break before the final segment they showed a commercial for the next weeks episode revealing who had stayed.
And the fact that they use pop ups for next week DURING THE NEW EPISODE just bugs me. I don't mind those on screen pop ups on your repeat showings but the intitial run episode should always be ad free in my opinion.

Vincent, I must say, is pretty amusing, and I was okay with him staying, if only because he's almost certain to blow up spectacularly later. The basket and the sunglasses? Ack. I mean, one or the other, dude, and preferably neither. Stacey was more of a Marla, I thought--oldish designs and no skills. Given Stacey's resume--recounted for us at least three times in both episodes, I think--this might be the first time in her life she's failed at anything.
Is Tim doing podcasts again? I'd love to know what he -really- thinks of the contestants--Tim has no problem with candor (the interview in the Chicago Trib was pretty awesome--just in case no one's linked to it yet--http://featuresblogs.chicagotribune.com/entertainment_tv/2006/07/talking_with_ti.html--he essentially says he didn't think Chloe should have won and also that everyone's precious Daniel has turned out to be kind of a jerk), to, I'm sure, the delight and chagrin of Bravo. Early favorite: Robert. I thought he should've won--even if the other guy's design was more like a real dress, he didn't use the materials from the apartment quite as fully as Robert did.

I didn't get to watch last night but have the episode Tivo'd. I am interested in knowing if anyone tried to do a "Santino" (who I believe should have won last season.)

Emily, Jeffrey Sebelia attempted a "Santino" designed dress with multiple layers, long in the front and short in the back. The judges even made a comment in reference to the similarity. Robert Best should have won the first challenge. Being a Barbie collector, it is nice to see the man behind all of her gorgeous gowns. He is my 1st favorite and 2nd favorite is Micheal Knight from Atlanta.
(ps) Daniel should have won Season 2.

No it is not just you who noticed the bizarre neck issue. It is almost as if his neck is a large platter on which this small head is placed. I had to call my girlfriend and ask almost verbatim the exact same question, is it a huge neck or an optical illusion.

Hey, MsTMC! You should read the Tim Gunn interview TVsquad had up a few days ago. Daniel has become "quite a little diva" and upon hearing that I am glad that he didnt win. Although, I don't think Chloe or santino should have either.

I was just searching around for more info on creepy Malan and found your recap. I, too, was perplexed by the neck of Jeffrey. My determination is that it is a combination issue between the words on the neck making it look wide or something and his shocking lack of chin.
