(S03E05) I had always wondered what a line of Aston Martins in various colors would look like. Now I know since Vince bought three of them for the guys. It's true what they say though. Money can't buy happiness. But it can buy trios of really fancy European-made cars.
After buying the cars, Vince had a special treat for Turtle. He got one of the local DJs to give Saigon some airtime. Within minutes, the song blew up and Turtle's phone wouldn't stop ringing. He even got Ari to represent Saigon which led to calls from all the major music labels.
It makes you wonder though. Up until now, Vince has really been the provider. Now that Saigon is a mortal lock for a giant multi-album contract, Turtle stands to make some serious dough. It'll be interesting to see what happens when Turtle suddenly finds himself on the same level as Vince. Will he still be Vince's driver? I doubt it. Plus, has Ari ever represented a fledgling rap artist trying to make the cross-over to acting? There could be a lot of problems here. It should be noted that Ari finally agreed to represent Drama too, but it was just to get him to shut up.
In the world of Medellin, Vince and E have hit a wall. Paul Haggis needs 90 days to shoot the film but Warner Bros. will only give Vince a 65 day extension before Aquaman II starts filming. Medellin is what he wants. Vince is even willing to gain the 70 pounds for Pablo Escobar. An agreement is finally reached where Vince will shoot part one of Medellin, then do A2, and finally gain the 70 pounds and finish Medellin. But the exec at WB caves and says Vince can't do it on the grounds that his teeny-bopper comic book hero shouldn't be seen doing cocaine for three hours on the big screen.
So Vince threatens to quit unless he's given $20 million up front to do the sequel. Ari wasn't there to hear that demand, but Vince had other factors to weigh as well. Biggest one being James Cameron. He was only attached for the first film.
Regardless of what ends up happening, I really like how Vince is starting to assert himself and make decisions based on his heart. He knows what he wants now and he it seems like he's finally getting sick of doing what the studios want.
Oh I almost forgot. Ari finally got rid of his daughter's boyfriend, Max Ballard. Ari bumped into Penny Marshall, who was gearing up for the first film in the Encyclopedia Brown series. I used to love those books. It starts taping in Kazakhstan for something like six months. Ari quickly suggests Max because he's "Dakota Fanning with a dick." Sounds like a winner to me.
Best Quote:
Paul Haggis (trying to sway Vince): "If I let contracts rule my life, I'd still be doing The Facts of Life rather than hanging with my boys."
His boys? Those would be his Oscars.

Brilliant episode. I caught both the east- and west coast feeds.
Loved:
- Vinny demanding $20 million after that turd from Warners reniged.
- E suggesting that Medellin be shot in two installments to let Vincent gain the needed 70 lbs, like Deniro did in Godfather II
- Paul Haggis hyperactive, passionate swearing and his coming over to the mansion and
- Drama agreeing to and laughing at anyhting that Ari said at Spago, just to curry favor
- The race to Spago
Hated:
- Giving out 3 Aston Martins; why not pick 3 different cars? Seemed like a product placement to me
Best show on TV. I saw on Wikipedia that seasons 4 & 5 have already been ordered. Any truth to that?

After finally getting up to season 3 now... I have to say that this is an excellent show. I haven't seen anything from this season yet, since I just finished season 2 yesterday, but I'm amazed that HBO can do what the big networks can't. Deliver consistently good TV. What the heck? I know it's not the swearing or the nudity but HBO has a stellar track record for good TV shows.

I would have to disagree with dvddesign here. I don't think HBO has a stellar track record for good TV shows. I think HBO has a stellar track record for great PR. There's a difference.
When you talk about their track record, you don't just get to pick and choose The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Entourage, and the other hits. You have to consider the really crappy stuff too. Have you watched Lucky Louie? Did you see The Comeback? Did anyone sucker you into seeing an episode of Mind of the Married Man? I know a lot of people like Curb Your Enthusiasm and Extras, but I would toss them on the not so great list as well. I suppose if we made a comprehensive list, they would have a good track record, but I would stop short of stellar.
But yes, Entourage continues to be great. I thought this was probably the strongest episode of the season so far. It is terrific to see Vince putting his foot down with the studio head and I really like that they are progressing the Turtle story. His move to being Saigon's manager full time should make for some great stories.
And just in case anyone is paying attention, I'd watch the crap out of some Encyclopedia Brown. And if that's a hit, don't forget the boys from Rocky Beach, The Three Investigators!

I'll agree HBO has put out some great TV. But they only come up with a winner series what, once every year or two?
The networks pretty much have to fill 21 hours a week with TV. Add to that most networks get at least 17 -20 episodes per season out of their shows. How many does HBO get?
Sure there are some really bad shows but there are some good ones as well. I think the networks probably match up pretty well to the 1 every 2 years standard of HBO.

I'm intrigued at the idea of Vince having to gain 70 lbs for Medellin. Based on that fact alone, I don't think he's going to end up doing the film.

Not to get too off topic, but watching this ep made me remember the old Encyclopedia Brown tv show that aired on HBO when I was a kid. Does anyone else remember too?

If you put Curb Your Enthusiasm on the not so great list, you might as well send the likes of, say, MASH, Cheers, Seinfeld, The Office, etc., there as well. (and maybe you do).
It's incredible that someone would try to use CYE as a strike _against_ HBO.
