This is shocking.
I'm not an As The World Turns fan (I'm a longtime Guiding Light watcher), but even I knew Benjamin Hendrickson, who played Detective Hal Munson on the show for the past 21 years. He was found dead at his home last Saturday. He died of a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.
Officials and castmates say that he was depressed over the death of his mom three years ago, and was also going through a hard storyline on ATWT, where his character had to deal with his daughter dying.
Hendrickson won an Emmy for the role in 2003. He will still be seen on the show until later this month.

Serious shock. It's so hard to watch him crying over his dying daughter knowing what happened last weekend and being aware that this emotionally draining storyline (and it was difficult to watch even before Hendrickson's suicide) may have been the thing that pushed a tremendously gifted actor (and an obviously sad and sensitive man) over the edge. May he rest in peace; I hope his mother greeted him with open arms.

I am so saddened to hear about the passing of Benjamin Hendrickson. To be ill enough to take your own life is truly a tragedy. A talent gone forever. My condolences to his family, friends and castmates.

This is a sad shock.
BTW, your post is confusing the name of the actor (Ben Hendrickson) with the character he played (Hal Munson)....when you say, "Munson was found dead....".
Just FYI.

I was so, so sorry to hear this tragic news. Although not a regular viewer of ATWT, I knew who 'Hal' was immediately---because of his talent & sense of reality he brought to his character. I, too, hope he is with his mother & is in peace.

I am so incredably sadden by this. Watching ATWT this week is unbearable enough. Watching the scenes with 'Jennifer' dying is gut wrenching, but knowning that Mr Henrickson is dead, makes it that much worse. My heartfelt condolences go out to all those who cared for him. His character and portrayal of, will be greatly missed.

I thought he had been physically sick seeing how gaunt he had looked lately and the fact that Randolph Mantooth had been filling in for him more frequently in the past few years. It's sad to see someone take their life, but I hope he finds the peace he couldn't find here.

It's sad news, but nobody can know what made him kill himself. And it's sad to see people here posting nasty comments about him. Don't judge anyone unless you've walked in THEIR shoes.

This day and age, doesn't there just always HAVE to be one in every crowd??!!! Jackass. HOW uncouth, rude, and heartless... a perfect example of what is wrong in this crappy world today. May Ben rest in peace.

I watch ATWT from time to time and always liked his character. I was shocked to hear of his death last night. I watched the show all last week and was unaware of his death. I was saddened by the "death" of Jennifer and was moved by his character's sadness at her passing. Now I'm even more moved. I am truly moved by his passing. Rest in peace, Mr. Hendrickson. May you find the peace in Heaven that you could not find here on earth.
Deeva.

how tacky to use this as a means to promote a real estate business, and how tacky further, to blame medications that help tens of thousands of people every day, based on your uninformed and factless ASSumption that he "probably" was taking them.
Go peddle your website somewhere else you uncouth, shameful ambulance chaser.

You know the passing of any individual is sad. Every person deserves their final respects. It does'nt really matter what kind of person they were, because somewhere out there are the people they left behind. Those people are the ones who deserve the support and negatvie derogatory comments are more than uncalled for. Judge not lest ye be judged.
My condolences to his family and loved ones.
Remember love and caring flow downhill, and for those that leave us and loved us, it is this love that we must carry forward and give to our children and friends especially in their name. This is our responsibility and how you pay respects to someone you love that you lose.

Those who committ suicide feel they have no other alternative, but we are not put on this earth to judge. GOD created us in his image and therefore we are not perfect, but we don't have all the answers to life's questions either. We are pupils here to learn and absorb what we can until we ourselves are called home. The statement of him being a "pussy" is uncalled for and is an opinion that should not have been shared because I am sure his family and friends do not need this right now. Remember we are here but for a short time so let's make the best of it today as we look forward to tomorrow that is not promised to any of us.

ok good actor and soap opera should never ever be used in the same sentence. sorry the guy has passed on but a good actor if he was he would not be stuck on such a brain dead medium or show like this he would ahve done some real acting. anyway feel bad for the guys family and all but with the war in Iraq and real important people dieing I find it hard to care.

I used to watch ATWT many years ago and just recently was tuning in mainly because of Jen and Rusty. It is indeed a great loss to all the cast and to his family. It was true emotion he showed during the illness of Jen. May God be with him and grant him the peace he sought.
