I'm risking a crapstorm of commenters on this one, but I'll post it anyway:Immediately after Star Jones announced on The View this morning that she was leaving the show, People's web site came out with a story where Jones says that her contract wasn't renewed; "I feel like I was fired," she concluded. Apparently, she was told by The Powers That Be (coughBarbaraWalterscough) that her contract wouldn't be renewed just a few days before news leaked that Rosie O'Donnell was going to be joining the show in September.
So, despite the rumors, Star didn't ask to leave because of Rosie's arrival. At least according to Star. Heh. Things are getting interesting over there.

I don’t know what’s more shocking, that story or Patricia Arquette's wedding dress.
On a more serious note, if the story is true, perhaps they are taking the show in a new direction. Maybe ABC or Walters was tired of her diva ego, narcissism, and shameless plugs.
So they dumped her before she could ever start a tirade on air with obvious arguments she would get in with O'Donnell
I still contend that she may have left on her own accord but I suppose the lack of a contract renewal makes more sense.
This could be a publicity ploy to get views on her side.
On a side note, I hope perhaps Gale King (aka Oprah Winfrey's professional coat tale rider) joins in her place.

It's too bad that Star was taken out of the equation like that. It would have been nice to see two celebrities settle their differences for a cause. Now daytime men and women will see the one side "View" of things. If you ask the viewers, doesn't seem a little staged?

The show's biggest mistake was hiring Rosie O'Donnel. She won't work well with other women. It will be the Rosie O'Donnel Show Part Two, and she's just not as fun as she used to be.
I agree that Star Jones has done little more than get on my nerves the past few years, but I hate that they possibly got rid of her to accomodate Rosie when Rosie's appearance may well mark the end of the show.
They may be trying to take The View in a new direction, but they're totally ignoring a formula that has worked for almost a decade.

I feel like this had been coming for a while. Correct me if I am wrong, though, but I thought Rosie and star were both liberals. I would have greatly preferred getting rid of Elisabeth Hassleb***h and keeping Star. She always got on my last nerve with her holyier than thou republican attitude and her opinions on gays. I know Star tended to always pimp her latest causes or her shoe fetish, but I could definetly handle that over Elisabeth.

There are few TV "personalities" that I detest...however, Star Jones makes my friggin' skin crawl. Her personality is like rusty nails on million miles of chalkboard and I can't imagine for the life of me why anyone would EVER want to subject themselves to having to endure her presence on the TV for any length of time.
That is just me though....

Well I think anyone who has watched the View since the announcement that Rosie was going to be joining the show should have been able to tell that Star's days were numbered. She has never been quieter than she has in the past couple of months, and she just sat there looking quite sad and forlorn. Too bad for you Star!!! You're big mouth got you into this situation, as most people watching the show could barely stand to listen to you go on and on about yourself. Star is a very annoying and egotistical person and hopefully nobody will be hiring her anytime soon and we won't have to put up with her nonsense anymore.

I am not a fan of Star's anymore. Ever since she used the show to plug companies so she would get discounts or free things for her wedding. It just felt like an abuse of power. But she did bring a nice legal point of view to some of the discussions which will be missed.
If I could choose who to get rid of, that would have been Elizabeth because she's an idiot. The only thing she is good for is the style segments. She is extremely narrow minded on some of the discussions and to me it seems like she's more in the minority when it comes to her generation so she's not a great spokes person for them.
I will hold judgment on Rosie once she's on the show. Sure she can be a loose cannon when she is speaking on behalf of herself but I don't think Barbara is going to let her be that. I am sure they had long talks about what would and wouldn't be tolerated before contracts were signed. It isn't Rosie's show so she's not the boss. That's why I'm willing to do the wait and see thing.
If Gayle is the replacement for Star, I'm all for it. She is a very intelligent and level headed person. I've seen her on Oprah a few times and I think she would be perfect for Hot Topics. Once again, it will be a wait and see thing.
So why did Barbara act so surprised today? They all acted like they didn't know what was going on and Star says she was told they wouldn't renew back in May. Were they just surprised that Star made her announcement the way she did? Was Joy really that far out of the loop or just a good actor?
BTW.... can't stand Barbara leading Hot Topics, she's horrible at it. You really do miss Meredith these days. Her input has always been fun but Meredith had been the glue that held Hot Topics together.

USA Today article quotes Babs on this http://www.usatoday.com/life/television/news/2006-06-27-star-jones_x.htm
It seems that Star has known since last fall that the network wanted her out. Long before Meredith decided to leave and Rosie was hired. The research showed that Star had fallen out of favor with the audience ever since she had lost weight and her wedding. The numbers didn't improve this season so they opted not to renew her contract. Barbara is hurt that Star says she was fired because she feels like she did everything she could to keep her on the show.
Just an interesting new angle on the story.

I'm reading all these comments and frankly, I can't believe that many people care about this show. Star Jones is fired/leaving/whatever....it hasn't been a big secret, so the actual news yesterday is pretty null.

I am fat- Star was fat, and we watched her and cheered her on becuase she had fat goign on. She did a drastic thing- most of us will not do- and CHANGED. Whatever it was that attracted to her in the first palce in her fat person-ality, left and we had a smaller preachy person on our hands- whom we did not like, especially. Now, Rosie is a comedian- We love Ellen, we love Rosie and humor will get you further than law school any day! Thanks- Im at work and dont watch this show in the first place!
