I haven't watched The Tonight Show in a while. I much prefer David Letterman to Jay Leno anyway, but I find it a greater struggle to stay up past 11:35 PM to watch late night television. However, I wanted to watch The Tonight Show last night because both George Carlin, one of my favorite comedians, and Ann Coulter, who has been gathering much attention lately for her caustic commentary on the 9/11 widows, were going to be on the show. I thought there would be some major fireworks between Carlin and Coulter and would make for terrific television. I thought wrong.
After Leno's monologue, Carlin comes out and does a boring routine featuring all the latest buzzwords and phrases in sort of a stream of conciousness rap. Usually, George Carlin is a brilliant commentator on current events as well as joking about everyday life, but this set bored me to tears. I couldn't wait for it to end. It probably wasn't more than 5 minutes long, but it seemed more like 50 minutes.
Leno then interviews Carlin, which was fairly uneventful. Then Ann Coulter comes out and, much to my shock, she gets a warm welcome from the audience. Are you kidding me? This hypocritical, abusive, loud-mouthed, hysterical screech gets cheers, whoops, and hollers from the audience? Am I missing something here?Anyway, she comes out and Jay Leno simply blows it. He doesn't challenge her on any of her recent statements, he doesn't engage her in any real conversation. He basically lets her spew off lines like "I wear their (liberals) contempt as a badge of honor!" What horses**t! To top it off, George Carlin just sits by and doesn't say a word. Not one single word! What the hell is going on here! You would think that George Carlin, one of the most brilliant comedic minds around and someone who would give Ann Coulter a run for her money, would get in on the conversation. Again, I thought wrong.
Now, it could be that NBC brass told Leno not to engage in any debate with Ann Coulter for fear she would say more wild and hysterical crap that would offend their viewing audience. They may have even put the clamps on George Carlin not to say anything either. As far as I'm concerned, this show was a complete waste of time.
Do I think Letterman would have done a better job of "interviewing" Ann Coulter? I don't know--but Letterman is taped in New York and I don't think Ann Coulter would find an audience there that would whoop and holler for her.
I may be stretching this a bit, but I somehow think NBC condones Ann Coulter and her points of view. She appears on The Today Show occasionally, and now she gets a free pass on The Tonight Show. What next, her own variety show?

Your hysterical pathetically whiny comments reveal just how OUT OF TOUCH with reality you are.
Just because a bunch of left wingers say the same thing to each over and over again in a liberal echo chamber doesn't mean anybody with an IQ >66.6 believes it.
LOL!!!!!

Mr. Carlin was HILARIOUS, and very very witty with his routine, last night. It was not his job to get into a scrape with Ms. Coulter. So don't turn on your own. The Tonight Show is not a debate forum. It's an entertainment show. I know that the liberal mind doesn't get it that the general public doesn't embrace the same tired old rhetoric which begins with "We're right, and if you're against us, we want everyone to hate you", but like it or not, Ms. Coulter represented herself well, and the general public agreed. Face it. The liberal voice is getting hoarse. You're losing your audience. Coulter is almost as abrasive as the liberal pundit, except she carries more truth in her message. Live with it! She got lots of well-earned cheers and applause.

How disappointing. I guess I'm glad I didn't go to the effort of watching, or the agony of sitting through Leno's monologue...
As for Letterman: He handles Bill O'Reilly well. There's no reason to think he wouldn't handle Coulter with equal wit and candor.

Victoria, you are a fool!
Are we surprised the Tonight Show avoided the controversy? Isn't it obvious they avoid any sort of entertainment on that show?

The audidence was loaded with right wing ringers who made sure Coulter wasn`t beat up on.I`d like to hear the story on that one.I bet they were standing in line for tickets in the middle of the night to ensure a possitive audience response for Coulter.
Sounds like something the neo-cons would do doesn`t it.

I could be wrong but did anyone get a good look of the sticker on the musical guest's guitar? I thought it said "This machine kllls Fascists!". Was that a reference to Ann Coulter?

Letterman certainly wouldn't have laid down and kiss her caboose the whole time. He handled guests in the past (see O'Reilly) and I'm sure he would have taken Coulter to task as well.
Leno is nothing short of a waste of television.

I really, really hope that the message on KT Tunstall's guitar was for Coulter.
I think NBC told Carlin not to say anything. They barely showed him on camera during her segment and when they did, his facial expressions were priceless.

Confession: I didn't see last night's show. That said:
This isn't a liberal vs. conservative thing, and all you people trying to make it that are wrong. This is simply an entertainment decision. The average Leno viewer doesn't want to see controversy; they want funny. You want controversy and debate, go watch Real Time or pop in a Best Of CNN Crossfire DVD. I know if I'm expecting to watch something that will make me laugh and instead find two people screaming at each other about Iraq, I'd probably change the channel until I found something that would make me laugh. Like, say, the Late Show.
Also: Carlin doesn't need to talk politics to be interesting. I'd watch him talk about the weather for a half-hour, and it would still be awesome.

One more reason to watch Letterman over Leno. I too watched Leno for the first time in years to see what would develop and nothing. Letterman would have least challenged her on her ridiculous assertions, hopefully doing to her what he did to O'Reilly. I am disappointed Carlin let her blather on as well. Does she own any other piece of clothing besides little black dresses?

I never watch Leno, but tuned in last night 'cause a friend IMed me to remind me about Carlin/Coulter. Coulter acted exactly how I thought she would, if a tad more arrogant than I expected (though I should have known better). Nothing to report there. I was disappointed in Carlin, though. Not because of the lack of "fireworks," but because his comedy bit, while clever, just wasn't very funny. Come on, George, you can do better than that!

While I understand that this is an entertainment show and thus didn't expect Leno to confront Ms. Coulter, I was surprised at the reception received from the audience, and sorely disappointed that George Carlin, a fellow New Yorker, had nothing to say to her.
The hype on the net (primarily due to one article that was run in papers nationwide) was that Carlin would respond to her hateful screed, and I wish he had. Carlin is clearly more capeable of engaging her than those who've interviewd SatAnn thus far.
Ann will probably never knowingly go into a situation where a critic can match her, either in intellect or in retoric, so the serendipitous pairing of Carlin (who could've done so on both counts) & Coulter on Leno was a golden opportunity that was sadly wasted.
I won't be at all surprised if it ever comes out that steps were taken by any/all of the parties involved to keep that confrontation from ever taking place. (I even admit to the possiblity that Carlin or his people didn't want him in the political fray... ...but his failure to speak out does diminish his image with me. I saw him as a guy who speaks his mind, but that wasn't who he was last night.)
As far as the audience... Assuming it wasn't packed, there's no accounting for taste... Plenty of people bought pet rocks, too...

The hatred in this country is at such a sad all time level. Is this post actually complaining someone didn't get treated worse on national TV?
Is there any love for anyone left in this country?
What happened to civility?
Good for carlin and coutler that they could go on a show and engage in a hate fest at midnight.
Cant anyone ever have an opinion anymore without being a LIAR or a FASICAST or UNPATRIATIC or hoping they get treated like crap?
Sad ....

I've seen Carlin perform on TV three times before over the past couple of years, and each time he did the exact same "buzz words" routine that he did last night. I guess he figures that if he went to the trouble of memorizing all that fast-paced language, he might as well repeat it.
"This machine kills Fascists" is the line that Woody Guthrie used to have on his guitar.
Letterman does much better with "political" guests than Leno, because he actually listens to what they have to say and engages them with his own opinions. (Plus he always seems relieved not to have to talk to yet another celebrity.)

I dont know whats going on with NBC lately. First, they put Ann Coulter on an "entertainment" program as if she were going to perform a song and dance (well, she does look like a cheap stripper - maybe if there was a pole in the middle of the floor she would have used it --) and then Dateline wastes its time by having Matt Lauer interview B (for Bimbo) Spears as if anyone REALLY cares about her. They need to advertise their call letters as Nothing But Crap.

Well, it is fairly well known that NBS (via corporate parent GE) is in bed with the Bush administration. When Brian Williams took over the evening news, he became the 'go to guy' for the white house press releases.
I don't suppose I would be suprised for either leno or carlin to get shut down by the brass. It could also be that all the buzz out here on the interweb freaked a bunch of different people out. I bet the only big story we'll see about this is the bump in viewers for the tonight show.

I cannot stand Leno. He's irritating and absolutely unfunny. But I Tivo'd last night's episode because of Carlin and Coulter in the hopes that there would be some entertainment despite Jay. Glad I haven't wasted my time watching it yet, because now I know I can just delete it.
Victoria is clearly insane. Don't you realize that watching Carlin eat Coulter alive WOULD HAVE BEEN entertaining?! I don't care how much "truth" Coulter may think she's representing. She deliberately gets inflammatory and stirs up the hornet's nest, which makes her an uber bitch.
And David Letterman is 50 times better than Leno. He'd never let Coulter get away without grilling her over her own words. Isn't that why Coulter is a guest, after all?

My opinion of Leno, Coulter, and Carlin all increased with last night's viewing.
Carlin - yeah the buzzword bit isn't laugh out loud funny - just amazing and clever. I'd listen to it five times if I could. And he did say something funny to Coulter - As he moved over to give her room on the couch he said "I never thought I'd be asked to move to the right of Ann Coulter" to which everyone laughed with good humor (including Coulter). He didn't interrupt Leno interviewing Coulter - after 140 appearances on the show he knows what he is supposed to do. I saw him covering his mouth a lot - probably had something rude to say, but was too polite to say it. Good on him.
Leno - He tried to be fair and civil. Gave her a chance to talk, to express who she was. Isn't that his job is? Watch his interview with Michael Moore sometime, he was about the same here. He actually got to the bottom of what she was trying to say with the controversial section. Criticized her (gently) for her choice of words. Well done.
Coulter - Yeah, guess what? She's a smart, clever person with a sense of humor. She was nice to George. She made some good points, even laughed at herself a little ("If I wanted attention I'd wear a small black dress and grow my hair long...."). I might not agree with much of what she says, but I don't see a reason to get hysterical about her.
