BBC Entertainment News is reporting that Billie Piper, the actress who plays David Tennant's assistant Rose Tyler in Doctor Who will depart the series at the end of the current run. It's not yet known if her character will die at the end of the series, or simply end her relationship with The Doctor and leave the possibility of a return open. It's long been rumored that Piper wanted to leave when Christopher Eccleston jumped ship after just one series of the show's recent revival, but thankfully the producers managed to keep her on for one more series.
She'll be sorely missed, both in her role as the Doctor's first real companion who has managed to delve deeper into the soul of the mysterious Timelord than any assistant before her, but also as a fine actress who has helped breathe life back into a near-dead franchise.
Oh, and if you're wondering where my reviews of the recent two-parter here in the U.K. are, they'll be here soon -- there's a World Cup on at the moment, and all of my valuable viewing time is being choked up watching The Beautiful Game.
[Thanks Jamie.]

Sad news, really. Billie truly set the bar for companions, with her well developed character and excellent acting skills. She will be missed. We can only hope her replacement is half as good as she was!

I'll miss her, but historically, two years is a pretty good run for a companion, especially one who held so much of the focus of the show.
I do hope that next year we get someone who's an interesting contrast - especially with Tennant's very young Doctor, a mature, self-confident woman in her late 20s-early 30s could provide some sparks, and the requisite eye candy.

On the plus side, no more episodes featuring her "mum."

If you think about it, she was the main focal point of the series even from the beginning. In the first episode Rose was on the screen first before The Doctor appeared.
I don't know about her chemistry with David Tennant, but I felt that Billie had a teriffic repoire with Christopher Eccleston. Maybe she'll join him on the remake of 'The Prisoner' he is supposedly a part of.

I'd like to see the next companion not be from Earth. not necessarily nonhuman, but so many episode have involved the doctor taking Rose back to Earth because of her mum or Mickey. I want to see more alien adventures. Let the spinoff, Torchwood, deal with Earth.

"Why you gotta leave Doctor Who right now?
BECAUSE WE WANT TO! BECAUSE WE WANT TO!"
sorry...i don't really watch the show, and i really have nothing relevant to say, so i thought i'd liven this place up a bit with a nod to Billie's pop star past. :)

Oh no! Man, I really like her. I sort of agree that she had better chemistry with Christopher Eccleston, but arrghh, I don't know how the show's going to be without her. I bet she'll be killed off. This is what I get for becoming attached. With Hermione Norris leaving Wire in the Blood too, my favorite British TV actresses are deserting me.
Don't suppose there's any chance this could be a foiler?

Its sad, but the character of Rose had to go because otherwise, her character would become more important than The Doctor's. And that would consequently end the show upon her ultimate departure.
The show is entitled *Doctor Who*, not *Rose Who*.
Pitty, I thought "Lynda with a Y" would have made a great companion. Too bad she died - and probably was not resurrected like Captain Jack - in "The Parting of the Ways" last season...err, last week on the SciFi Channel.

It will be sad to see Rose (or any companion) leave after you have become accustomed to them. However, this is one of the great features of Doctor Who as a series. The show does not depend upon any single actor. As long as the stories are well written and well acted, the show will survive.
I still will miss Billie Piper and Christopher Eccleston, but I look forward to seeing more well written stories performed by very good actors.
More than the actors, I miss the 90 minute stories.
(I think they were shown in four 22.5 minute episodes)
With that amount of time, the writers were able to get some well written and in depth story lines developed.

This is horrible!!! First Christopher Eccleston, who was the best doctor ever, and now Billie!!!!!!!!! i can't believe it!! they might as well stop the show if all of the best actors and actresses are going to leave. the show won't be the same without her!!! I won't watch it any more after this. they should have stoped when more people were into it.
