Warner Home Video has become the official distributor of not only the original theatrical Popeye animated shorts produced by both Fleischer Studios and Famous Studios, but also Popeye's TV series such as The Continuing Adventures of Popeye and Popeye and Son. The result is hundreds of animated shorts featuring the lovable but unintelligible sailor man getting their first legitimate release since the character first appeared on movie screens in the early 1930s. Popeye actually started out even earlier as a breakout character in E.C. Segar's "Thimble Theater" comic strip. Currently, Warner Home Video is working on restoring the cartoons, but no word on exactly when the DVDs will be available, other than some time in 2007. I just hope they release the theatrical shorts separately from the TV shows, as I'm not quite as interested in his made-for-TV stuff. Nevertheless, this is a very cool thing, and fans should be thrilled.

Well, blow me down!! The old Popeyes are the best ever!!! Nearly all the characters talk under their breath in the early ones, and those comments are the funniest bits in the cartoons. Even tho Betty Boop cartoons are clever and entertaining, they never, to me, reached the level of funny as the Popeyes did.

No, this is not a cool thing at all.
Warner is now claiming that some of these shorts which were previously acknowledged to belong to all of us (in the public domain) are now their private property, available only for a fee.
I am urging civil disobedience on this matter and free distribution of those Popeye cartoons previously released in the public domain. This includes many of the Famous Studios shorts and some (but not all of) the Fleischer black and white shorts. Do your research, but pretty much any Popeye cartoons already released on DVD (except those from the early 60's owned by Hearst Entertainment) are public domain. Don't let Warner Brothers take away your property!
