The sixth and final season of HBO's prison melodrama Oz will be out on DVD on September 5, and all I can say is, "it's about damn time." The series aired during my college and post college years when my access to HBO was intermittent at best. Nevertheless, I was able to catch most of the episodes. One very important episode I never saw, however, was the final one. In other words, I've been waiting all this time to find out how the series ended. Attempts to get my hands on that episode proved fruitless, so I finally gave up, assuming they'd eventually have to release it on DVD. I figure I've waited this long to find out what happens, what's another three months? While the show wasn't flawless, I think it was one of the best original series to air on HBO. Or maybe I just like naked guys stabbing each other with screwdrivers. My first step is learning to love that part of myself.Final season of Oz coming to DVD

I don't know if it's just me, but I think that Oz was the defining show on HBO. However, it was always treated like the red-headed stepchild and never got any respect as shows like the Sopranos and Sex and the City got all the credit. Last night's episode of the Sopranos, in my humble opinion, was dreadful. I couldn't wait for it to end.
This whole season, in my opinion, was horribly boring. The whole "Vito's gay" theme really bothered me, as it felt like they were forcing a topical issue just to remain fresh. It's as if they ran out of ideas and the gay mobster theme was all they had left.
I never once got that feeling with Oz. Each episode, and especially each season finale, ended with such a bang. And the series finale was a wonderful wrap-up of everything that we had experienced over the previous six years.

Well it could easily be argued that Oz pretty much ran with the same idea in every episode of every season. Characters were introduced left and right, only to be killed off by the end of the episode. I didn't care, though, because the main characters were always the stars of the show, and regardless of how far fetched the plots ever became, they were exciting and fresh. You gotta love a show that can keep shankings interesting for season after season.
For me, it was also the defining show on HBO. It represented HBO's commitment to original programming that did anything but conform to the preconcieved notions of what an hour long series can do. I know a lot of others point to The Larry Sanders show as being a flagship of original programming for the channel, but for me it will always be Oz.

So the gay issue was never forced on people during OZ? The whole 5th season was about the relationship between Beecher and Keller lol.

The difference is, on Oz, there was always the issue of prison rape. There was always the relationship between Beecher and Keller. It never felt forced, like they needed something sensational to boost ratings or to attract a certain audience. This season of the Sopranos and the gay theme felt so forced and unrelated to anything. It was completely random, it came out of nowhere.
Maybe they will make more of it at the end of the season. There was a flash of it at the "not-a-sit-down" where they kind of foreshadowed that we are not done dealing with the issue of Vito's sexuality.
