Game Show Marathon: Let's Make a Deal

Let's Make a Deal(S01E02) I'm now beginning to get a feeling that Game Show Marathon is not winning me over. It's not the games themselves; they are classics that span the generations and it's interesting to see how they are played in this type of environment. It's not Rikki Lake, either; she's really, really trying to get into the spirit of it all and I commend her for giving it a go.

No, the problem is the celebrities. Other than former Trading Spaces host Paige Davis (who is probably chipper during funerals), the other celebrities playing for their favorite charities just seem to be going through the motions to get to the semi-finals. Kathy Najimy and Leslie Nielsen are the worst; Kathy because she doesn't seem to give a s*@! about any of it, and Leslie because, frankly, I don't think he knows where he is.

Take tonight's episode, where they played the Monty Hall classic Let's Make a Deal. Other than Paige's reactions of making a pretty bad deal, the other players, including Lance Bass and Tim Meadows, all seemed dead from the neck up. Most of the contestants were playing it extremely safe, especially during the Big Deal.

And you know why? Because, other than winning money for their charities, they aren't playing for anyone else!

Well, they're playing for an anonymous person who answers a trivia question today. What they should really be doing is trying to win prizes for the audience members who were at the tapings of Marathon. What did audience members get anyway (other than the MP3 player that Paige won for them during The Price is Right episode)? During one of the games this evening Rikki brought up two audience members to play with Tim Meadows. However, I don't think they got to keep the prizes or the money they were given. If Tim was going to try to win something for these two contestants I think that he would probably be more enthusiastic.

Let's talk about the game itself. Unlike The Price is Right, Let's Make a Deal cannot be played in a one hour format. Sure, its been tried in the past, but failed miserably. The show just dragged on, particularly the game that Tim Meadows played with the two audience contestants. The way the contestants were pulled was awkward as well; we knew who they were going to be so why didn't Rikki introduce them rather than saying 'I'm looking for a banana'? I don't believe Monty ever actually asked questions like that to the audience.

Sigh. All right, I think we got past the two most awkward episodes of Game Show Marathon. The next one is Beat the Clock, which will not involve any contestant guessing the price of calcium supplements. See you next week.
