Is it possible for a TV show to jump the shark before its first season is even over? TV writer Lee Goldberg thinks that it may have. The L.A. Times has a story about how a lot of people in the medical profession think that the popular ABC medical drama has already gone way over the top. Specifically, they're talking about the season finale and the plot about an intern getting involved with a patient.I've never seen the show, so I can't say that it has jumped the shark or not. But I guess my first question is: people are actually still using the term "jumping the shark?" That's soooo 2001.

2nd season, Bob... Grey's just finished its 2nd season.
And Goldberg isn't saying anything different than what I, other TV critics, and hundreds of viewers have been saying in the two weeks since the finale. I *do* like the doc's "finale vs. reality" comparison, though.

I love the expression "Jumping The Shark", it's a bit of a legacy from Arrested Development.

But, "Jump the Shark" isn't from Arrested Development. It's from Happy days.

Grey's is going into its third season? Wow, time flies when...well, you don't watch it.

Actually the legacy is not from Arrested Development, it actually started with a episode of Happy Days back on the 70's.

well...the first season was only 7 episodes. Does that really count as a whole season?
Also, isn't the phrase "jumping the shark" from Happy Days? and Arrested Development just played off of it? Or am I thinking of something else.

Saying "jumping the shark" started with Happy Days is accurate but not quite the whole story, as 99.9999% of our readership will be able to tell you.

People are confusing badly wriiten medical storylines with "jumping the shark". When she got invovled with a patient pulled his heart-plug and didn't even get fired after he died is just badly written.
If this show would have a jump the shark moment it would've been when the pole got stuck into the two people and no one thought to cut it through the middle until after they killed Monica Keena. God that was a great and stupid episode.

Can anyone recommend a better TV news site/blog? I am starting to get a bit bummed by the quality of "reporting" and opinions here. This is only a small slight to the weblogs inc, but I'm sincerely looking for a better resource.

It's just a show. They're after ratings. Good grief they need to stop picking things apart so much. These people need to get a hobby. I love Grey's Anatomy. Not because it's something I think is true to life.....it's just a fun show to watch. The loving gazes over the surgical masks......the little "accidental" touches!!! Come on.....give it a rest!!! Have fun watching it!!

The show can't jump the shark due to inaccuracy to the medical profession. If you want accurate, go read a book. Grey's Anatomy is a soap opera that happens to take place in a hospital. The storyline may have been poorly written, but that's beside the point. Do real criminologists actually confront criminals and carry guns? Do real lawyers always yell at the judge and sleep with clients? No, but thank God they do on TV.

Maybe these same medical professionals would appreciate a more true to their career television drama like a show titled, Malpractice, where physicians deal with the every day reality of being sued by their patients and patients families.

I know that the story line doesn't really show 100% accurancy but the story does grab. I am a mother and have no life so on Sundays ABC's has the shows that I need to give me some reason why I continue to raise my kids alone and believe that there is some fun out there. Maybe if someone wants to babysit for me on Sundays I could go out and live a life like Meredith Grey. LOL.... I need a man like Dr. McDreamy lol...

As a RN I was asked to watch the show by my sister. I can't stand ER. I watched it for 3 years and then sent it packing. Natural disasters happening every week in the ER is more than a bit ridiculous. So I was really not into watching Grey's Anatomy. But I did. I'm hooked on it, for now. Although it's not medically and ethically real it's entertaining. And they are more accurate with everyday cases and happenings in the hospital than ER is. But the season finale took a ER type leap with the cutting the L-Vad and basically having a relationship with a patient. This is what I was afraid of. I don't mind soap opera type writing if it's not to outrageous. If this is where Grey's is going they lost me. If Izzy comes back in the third season and is allowed to practice medicine again then they have gone off the deep end.

Re: Jumping the Shark - this show can't jump it because it's already done jumped. Meredith is a straight up carbon copy of Ally McBeal dressed in Scrubs with all of the annoyances. Self-involved and self-pitying, making for a generally unlikeable character.
Re: better TV weblog - I think this is it. I liked the Bobber's writing from back in the Autoblog days, and like it here as well. One reason I do like the Weblogs Inc blogs (actually AOL) is that the comments are open - no pre-approved commenter ability grants ala Gawker. Which may not be bad, I just prefer the more open system.

We can debate Jumping the Shark with Grey's Anatomy all summer long, but yes, the Izzy storyline was over the top, and for me, that was a deal breaker. I got the feeling that the writers had written these last few eps before they actually got the notice they were being renewed, and that they just wanted to send it over the top, just in case they didn't have a "next season" to come back to.
What's next, writers? Dancing Babies? Maybe
you're going to have Merideth's mother wake up at the end of the third season and this whole series is going to be a dream? Ha!
Look, I didn't mind the bit where the "Young Doctors In Love" concept was done similar to the "Young Lawyers In Love" as we've seen in Ally Mc Beal and elsewhere... Hell, we finally got around to Grissom sleeping with his co-worker, the boring one that should have gotten fired a year or two back... so everyone on the tube is getting some lately. I get that entire premise. Grey's Anatomy has a great set of characters, lots of potential for conflict, but hell, man, you softened up the Nazi for Christ's sake! Would you do me a favor and put her character back where it belonged? Please?
Listen Grey's Anatomy writers/producers... It's not too late. Have Izzy wake up on McTransplant's bedside and have the last episode be a dream. It's not Jumping the Shark if you have a Jumping the Shark episode be a dream...
Is it?

well, i hate to seem like i'm defending GA (i think the series started over the shark), but Scrubs did the same thing(same thing? Greys Taking a Scrubs plotline? nooooooo...) in its 1st season. of course that was done with better acting and writing, but that wasn't a jump the shark moment there.
just saying it's TV and just becasue medical professionals say something jumped the shark doesn't mean much. what matters is the TV Geek Elite's opinion.
and walt... unless a show is Newhart, most episodes that are dreams run a VERY HIGH risk of being jump the shark moments.

Is Dr.Funbags saying that Bob Sassone jumped the shark on TVSquad/Weblog Inc.?
I could see if he accused AOL for the jump but not our guy Bob, especially after not having a link to my blog in the top twenty list.
I personally loved TV Tome but they jumped the shark big time after the whole CNET thing.
My blog never jumped the shark but it generally sucks, sorry Dr.Funbags.

I think Bob has also jumped the shark.. mainly for reporting on a show he's never seen.
Who cares what the medical community thinks? I watch TV for entertainment not a science lesson.

This show was in the sharks belly the day some genius writer decided to copy ER. And use bland dull characters to boot.
