My favorite thing about the Idol finale isn't the performances, but playing "Where's Waldo?" with the random B-list celebrities in attendance. My question is, why do some of them get their names closed captioned while others do not? And, who was the nitwit that mistakenly identified Tori Spelling as one of "Taylor's Family & Friends"?
I have to admit that I wasn't really excited about tonight...
The performance portion of the American Idol finale always feels a lot like the first 10 minutes of the Super Bowl, over-indulgent and over-hyped. I'm reserving all my emotions for the last 10 minutes of tomorrow night's overly drawn-out results show. I will be ecstatic if Taylor, Sir Goofball, defies all odds and takes this thing. And I will be shattered if Katharine manages to become the 800th-millionth-gazillionth attractive female (er, minus Fantasia) to win this thing. Hey, remember in Season 2 when a fat, black guy and a skinny, white dork made it to the finale? That was awesome! That is what American Idol is all about -- the underdogs.
I know I should stop whining, but I'm not ready to. I really wish it was Chris and Taylor in the finale. I'm not ready to let that go yet. Yeah, yeah, yeah ... Katharine can sing, she's beautiful, and she was "born to do this." So what? As far as I'm concerned, perfect people were for Star Search. American Idol is for the flawed rejects. I think that's why so many of the previous Idols have been from the South, and not from New York or LA. Because America wants to root for the underdogs, for people that have been rejected time and time before.
I like Katharine, but it all seems so contrived. She's from LA, the voice coach mom, the sobbing dad. It just bores me. But Taylor. He's a big ball of wrong, and somehow it makes it all right. He's tubby. Gray haired. Goofy. He's got a constipated look about him, and yet I suspect that he's completely regular. If I ran into Taylor at the grocery store, he'd be buying macaroni and cheese, but would not have the gallon of milk at home that would permit him to cook and enjoy said treat. I think he's the type of guy that dons a Santa hat the day after Thanksgiving and rarely removes it through the month of December. Without a doubt, he has farted and blamed it on the family dog. He's the type of guy that uses hugs as currency.
I just like the guy, and I want him to win. Is he a better singer than Katharine? No. Is he a better entertainer? Absolutely. If the foreign press ran an article on Taylor proclaiming him the new American Idol, would the rest of the world snicker and think, "Stupid Americans. Look at this jackass"? Without a doubt, and that's what I love about him. I voted for Taylor not because of the performances tonight, but because I just like who he is, and how unlikely it was that he made it this far. It didn't seem fair to bring this underdog all the way to the big show, and just leave him tied to a tree outside.
I want Taylor to win. I hope he wins.

Great Blog - right on target - I was able to get through once to vote for Taylor. You know it's funny, at first I said I didn't care about these two - but after seeing how much fun Taylor has up there singing and dancing you can't help but put a smile on your face, because face it, how many of us dance and sing in our homes where others can't see and we have a good time, Taylor does it for all to see and even though the dancing is awkward, he is still having as much fun as we do. That is entertainment. Kat, as beautiful as she is, does not radiate that.

Fingers crossed here for Taylor! I would have to disagree with you on one point. Although Katherine does has a remarkably beautiful voice, I think her training gets in her way sometimes. When she misses, EVERYONE hears it. Taylor, however, is all about soul, and soul is much more about being in the moment than it is about perfect execution. When Taylor misses, if anybody notices they certainly don't mind, they are enjoying the ride. All of this makes Taylor the better singer.

Lacy I am with you 100% on all your comments.
Missy, I had trouble getting through on the phone lines as well. It took me an hour and a half to get through for one vote. I kept it up and managed to get in 3 votes for Taylor, so you are covered. The voting was extended to 4 hours but I can't stay up to midnight anymore, much less 1 a.m. I have finally turned into my grandmother.
As much as I wanted to see Chris up there with Taylor in the final two, I have to say that last night for the first time, I felt Katherine had a right to be up there. She finally managed to entertain the audience and show she is capable of learning how to grab your attention. I still can't stand the sitting on the stage garbage. It seems to be a crutch for her. I also thought her finale was very weak and there was no sizzle, no electricity.
So, I am still rooting for Taylor. I find his personality really comes through through and he is so much damned fun to watch! He just seems to enjoy himself in front of an audience and that is what I want to see.

I truly hope that Taylor wins; he always makes me smile. I do feel bad for Katherine, though; who on earth wrote that wretched, horrible "original song" she had to sing? I don't think anyone on earth could have sung that clunker and made it sound good.

Taylor was great (minus the purple jacket) I was able to get two votes in for him. Kat did not take any chances and did two songs she knew would showcase her and her last song was not a good one not in choice or delivery. Hope its Taylor all the way if not then next year no point in watching since we will all know they just pick who they think is the most marketable and string us along. Go Taylor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When Katherine sang two of the songs she had already sang, gezzz they could have just played the tape back from a couple weeks ago as far as I was concerned. What was she thinking??
I hope Taylor blows her out of the water (or off the floor) with votes. I was able to get through several times on the phone lines and also sent in Text votes as well. I, like others have said would much rather be entertained by T-Man than watch Katherine look feverish on the floor.

I loved Chris, Mandisa, Elliot and Taylor from the start!!! As you stated, the Kathrines' of this world are a dime a dozen..I swear, I would not even recognize her voice on a cd! zzzzzz's So, she has proved she can sing 1 song sitting down. How many 'rainbows' must we sit through? Ok, Ok, One album with 15 versions of 'rainbows'..Oh, yea..THATS THE TICKET!
Her 'Drama Dad' sobs each week (w/ no kleenex) for effect..OMG..She has only been singing since she was 4 w/ her 'Stage Mammy' drilling her everyday! Streaming tears (with snot and all, make me puke) Pleassssse!
GO TAYLOR ...WE ADORE YOU..WHAOOOO AND ALL!!!

I am still not sure about Kat. If she wins, it will be based on her one great song "Over the Rainbow". I find her shrill many times, and when she tries to hard, it can be like nails on a chalkboard.....way too high and screechy. It's when she sings low and quietly that she nails it but like so many others (call it the Mariah-syndrome) she feels the need to do all these vocal acrobatics that she really cannot handle. Her last song was painful, I found myself lowering the volume because it was beginning to hurt my ears. Also, to me there's a spark missing with her. Kelly Clarkson had it but with Kat, she just kind of leaves me cold. So go Taylor.....I loved his last song, even though it was cheesy. But his voice and genuine talent made it great.

I think Taylor isn't the uderdog you might think...he's NEVER been in the bottom 3 (or 2 for that matter). I think he is great and just what america needs right now what with all the soul-less-ness out there.
I would even venture to say that-per the foreign press comments-he gives american entertainment more credability.
Did anyone catch the overtly religious tones to the finale songs? WTF. That was so bizaro. I wouldn't buy those singles.

Katherine is a very polished singer, similar to a new shiney pair of shoes. She fits but not too comfortable.
Taylor on the otherhand is more like a pair of old sneekers you know you should throw away, but can't.
GGGOOOOOOOO TAYLOR !!!!!!!!!

Boo-hoo, Kat's last song really sucked. And that's her single??? She needed to leave us with a performance that made us go 'wow' and begging for more. But she didn't and so Taylor probably wins. And did she look fat in that last dress, or is just me.

I too, could not get through to vote for Taylor. I tried over and over using redial for two hours, getting busy signals, 'sorry, your call could not go through as dialed,' and nothing- blank air on line.
The same thing happened to me when Clay lost. I tried for two hours, never getting through. Then, just for curiosity, I dialed Ruben's line, and got through on the first try--- ummm, tell me there is not something wrong with that picture. I have talked to lots of people who did the same thing- maybe that is how Ruben won. Maybe the producers set it up that way so Ruben could win. But look what happened... Clay has sold 3 million records, whereas Ruben has sold 600,000.
I was in a chatroom last night, and many people there were having the same problems, redialing and not getting through for Taylor, and 99% of the people in there were trying to vote for Taylor. Out of 36 people, there was only one person who wanted Katherine to win.
I think Katherine is very talented, and think she will have success, probably in singing and possibly acting, too. I understand George Clooney has already offered her an acting job.
However, I think Taylor has the entertainment factor, and heart that Katherine lacks, in my opinion.
It has been said over and over that people should only be able to vote once per phone line, then everyone who wants to vote, could get through, and the voting process would be more realistic. Until the producers get wise to this, the contoversy over voting will continue. LaToya, Clay, Chis, and now Taylor- it is just not right that people can not get through to vote.
I wish Taylor and Katherine the best, and may the BEST person win. Good luck tonight to the fans and to Taylor and Katherine.
