(S08E22) No sir, I didn't like it. Didn't like it one bit.
I'm talking about the series finale of the WB's Charmed , which ended its eighth and final season on Sunday night. What should have been a great sendoff by producers and writers for the Halliwell sisters Piper (Holly Marie Combs), Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) and Paige (Rose McGowan) was flat, disappointing, and focused more on the secondary players than The Charmed Ones.
However, that's not the reason why I disliked the episode. The thing that ticked me off was the magical device that Piper, the oldest sister, used in order to save Phoebe and Paige form a horrible death that they encountered last episode. A device that, in my opinion, is the lazy way out of resolving issues.
I'm talking about . . . .wait for it . . . time travel. Aarrrgh!
When writers need to correct tragic situation in science fiction or fantasy they love to rely on time travel to make everything right. Now, you're probably gritting your teeth and saying 'Rich, you arrogant bastard! I bet you would go back in time to save a loved one.' My answer to that would be 'no' because 1) I don't know anyone who has the ability to time travel, and 2) I would royally screw up the timeline. Anyone who has watched The Butterfly Effect knows that even one insignificant change in a timeline can alter the future for eternity. So, rather than have some other magical way of restoring life to Phoebe and Paige, or have a Whitelighter like Leo (Brian Krause) come down and save the sisters, the writers resorted to this simple age-old solution.
It was lamer than Barbaro during the running of The Preakness and it made the Halliwell sisters go out in a whimper rather than the blaze of glory they deserved after defeating so many powerful demons throughout the series run. Add to that the fact that this was a Piper-driven episode with Phoebe and Paige in the background. The extended Halliwell family members got more screen time than either Milano or McGowan. Being a series finale it should have focused only on The Charmed Ones. Instead we got brief glimpses of them during battle and as they shared their memories of what happened to their lives in the future.
I always enjoyed Charmed when I watched it in the past and I was looking for a more powerful ending to the series. I'm very sorry that there wasn't one to be had.

I have watched Charmed since the beginning. It has always been my favourite show--never having missed an episode. I would have to say that I could not have asked for a better ending to the show that has taking me through the past eight years. It brought in all of my favourite characters, focused more on the relationships of family which is what the show has always been about and secured the future by fixing the past. Even the method by which Piper travels through time was perfect--connecting through love. There was no need to have some huge send off for the sisters because every episode has been about a huge battle and a spectacular fight. This was the episode that summed it all up, brought it all together, and informed viewers of what the future held in store for the Charmed Ones.
Time travel has always been featured in Charmed. IN response to "I don't know anyone who has the ability to time travel"--how many people do you know that can blow things up with a wave of their hands, heal the injured, see the future, or orb from one place to another?

After reading Richard's post I do have to admit it did seem to put 2 of the 3 girls in the background. The last episode, in my eyes, deserved to be a 2 hour finale. Some of it flew by too fast and could've slowed down to see the future a bit more. Of course I immediately assumed it would be a turning back time type of ending with only Piper surviving the battle. I was also disappointed to not see Pru make an entrance yet alone not be in a picture at the end. She was the reason I started to watch it and to not have her in the finale truly disappoints me.

Honestly, the last episode of Charmed was a little disappointing. And I find it very strange that the entire extended cast came back with the exception of Prue. If they would have featured Prue this last show would have went out with a blast. Alas it did not. It was still one of my favorite shows though.

I agree with Shawn. I didn't need some huge heavy plot action screen time thing. I just wanted to see al my fav characters. I loved Chris and Wyatt. Hello, get them their own shows. How freaking cool would that be? Drew Fuller was awesome, that was my favorite recent season. I know it was a cheeseball ending, but I think that's what the fans wanted. I loved the ending with the little girl waving shut the door. Very touching.

I agree with Shawn. I too have been a true Charmed enthusiast since Day 1 and found the finale very satisfying. I would however agree that it was a little more Piper centered than I normally like (nothing against Piper, but most of my favorite story lines center around all three). I did, however, love how there will be no question as to what is in store for the Charmed Ones, or any of the future Generations of the Halliwell line. Overall very satisfying.

I just couldn't get over the plot holes and continuity issues. Other than that it was fine how everyone was brought together (Cept Darryl, who deserved a tip of the hat) and the individual scenes between the family is worth the mention. Christie's storyline was a little shocking considering how much she supposedly meant to the show in the final season. Nice killing all her family and making her a nanny. Charmed has always been a schmaltzy show with hardy any writing needed, its a formula thats worked well throughout the series. I'll miss it but not much.
Still I haven't seen a classy ending on the WB since Angel's. Heck, I haven't seen one on any network since then.

I was very disappointed with the ending , they needed to have andy , Prue, and cole come back from the dead also , they could have had phoebein a love triangle and have to choose either coop or cole , that would have beat the lame way they let the relationship start with them in the finale.

Cole - would have been boring, heck when he was a cast member the story was boring.
Andy - with no Prue? Plus we had a real goodbye to Andy.
Prue - with that b*tch Shannen? We knew that wasn't happening, its Aaron Spelling and Shannen Doherty how many times can you make up?
Time Travel is always used in Charmed. I'm not disappointed by that, more by the fact a Cupid had that sort of power and the whole 'mission' depended on a guy who should be wearing a diaper carrying an arrow.

Ok... I thought it was really good - I have watched the series from day one and was sad to see the girls go. I liked the way they pulled the family together in the end and in the scene with all the "goodbyes" and hugging you could see the actors struggling to get through. I LOVED the silent nod to Prue at the end, with the little girl closing the door. I have a feeling there were legal reasons they didn't show her pictures or have her back and to end the whole thing with, what I saw as an acknowledgement of her was pretty cool.

I would LOVE to see a series focused on Wyatt and Chris! I love those dudes (as much as I love the sisters). About last night's show, I thought it was an ok ending. I cried. I've watched the show from the beginning and will really miss the sisters and the whole family. But I have to say, I was really happy to see Billy's sister die. I couldn't stand that storyline - and I really hated the fact that Leo was gone all season. Whatever. It's over now and they will be missed - whether the last show sucked or not. Like I said, I cried - so it couldn't have been that bad. I love the part when Wyatt said, "Uncle Coup!" That was the best!

As another who has watched the show since the very beginnig, I loved the ending. These girls deserved nothing less than living "happily ever after."
By the way, I am all in favor of a spinoff featuring Wyatt and Chris. But I could understand how that could be almost impossible to accomplish. It is shown in the final episode of Charmed that Piper and Leo grow to a ripe old age, and how do you have a show about witches where the sons wouldn't go to their parents for advice about how to vanquish this week's demon? I say a better idea would be about the boys as youngsters in magic school, as if it's boarding school. They would just need Leo on board, as he is shown in the final episode as a professor at the school.
Overall, this was a great show, and I am very sad to see it go. I couldn't have asked for a better ending (Well, that isn't entirely true. I detest Billie, especially after she used Wyatt's powers to unlesh the Hollow, so I would have liked to see her and her sister vanquished together. I do have to say that she redeemed herself by taking her sister's life, so I guess I can live with that.)
Blessed Be.

I thought it was cute. I do agree that it seemed to be a Piper driven ending, but the other 2 were dead at the time!!! I busted out laughing when Wyatt called him Uncle Coop and then Chris gave him a dirty look. That was hysterical.
All-in-all, I thought it tidied everything up pretty well. I would have liked to see Prue. I know..I know.. Shannen Doherty, witch from hell, but the character was awesome.
I loved the Wyatt and Chris part. Can you say SPIN OFF???? Hello, new network....

I have always loved the show, and will miss it greatly. But I do think the last episode could have used more pizzazz. I expected to be on the edge of my seat more, but it seemed to have a steady flow. But I do like the way that it ended. It left you with no doubts. They got there happily ever after and that is what they deserved. But I did notice that Phoebe had 3 Girls could they be the next Charmed Ones??
Oh and just to let you know Leo is Mortal and has been for awhile on the show, so it would not have been possible for him to come down to heal them. The only way that could have happened was for him to be returned, killed, and then quickly made into a white-lighter.

Hi,
I really liked this episode for a lot of reasons.
Charmed is something that goes beyond the chains of space and time, the Charmed line started 3 centuries before and Brad Kern wanted to show us that it didn't finish with the last episode, and that's what the title suggests! Time travel was needed...We have had 8 years of episode about the Charmed ones...an episode based only on the charmed ones again would have been boring, they tried to gather all the cast they could for a big ending with all the Charmed Family, that is not just the Charmed ones, the show is not called Charmed Ones, it's called Charmed and a real Charmed fan sholud know what that means. There could have been a lot of things to add, surely, Cole and Prue (Julian and Shannen??? They didn't want to come...and Shannen really didn't deserve to be in the last episode!!!) The episode was a two hour episode split by the WB, The first part was a Charmed Ones centric part, the second one was something more, something new and the end was great! We saw that the Halliwell line doesn't stop with those 2 kids, there are 9!!! And then it goes on further, there are 5 more kids and Grandma Piper told her grand-daughter that one day the book of shadows will be hers, so again the line continues. This is a perfect Charmed ending, because it is not The End. I really wouldn't have liked the Charmed Ones closing the door of the Manor...again...because that would have put an end to Charmed and te title "Forever Charmed"....would have been completely wrong. This is my opinion...
Thank you Brad.

I just want to say again, that if anyone at the CW (cringe) is reading this, you MUST get Drew Fuller and the other guy to do a spin off in the future. Those guys were awesome. This show was always lacking in the testosterone department. Don't get me wrong, I loved the show, but I loved the brothers fighting together, they have excellent chemistry.

The charmed series finale was perfect. Usually you get a twist or a cliff hanger. I mean you dont know what the characters go of to do. In this case it potrayed in detail about what happened to the Halliwell (Charmed) sisters. And that is the best. I you remember correctly the only choice Piper had was to use Coop's ring. And thats not the only way the sister traveled. They used Billie's projection power. Still time travel but to save a life in a short amount of time wouldn't anybody do the same. It wasn't just a simple time travel, the sisters had to go to many different places to change different things. I didn't hear any complantes when Chris came from the future to prevent Wyatt from becoming evil. So to me it was maybe the best series finale and possibly the best ever charmed episode i have ever seen.

As I read over some more comments since my first one, I wanted to come back and say a few more things.
1. Piper is the only cast member left from the original pilot (where Lori Rom plays Phoebe). I think it is only natural that she should be the leading force in a series finale--a serries she has been with since the VERY beginning.
2. I read an interview online and it focused on the Shannen Doherty issue. I have to say that I would have loved for her to come back in some way, but if you think about it, she's been gone for five years. She was only on the show for three and Rose McGowan for five. The show is about three sisters lives . . . and the lives of their children. Prue is gone, and the final episode, while it did deal with the past, was more about moving on to the future, something Prue has no place in. Furthermore, she doesn't deserve to come back and spread a little magic on the show she abandoned as if everythign is alright. The show's not about her or her character anymore.
3. Finally, the magical closing of the door was never a sign of the end--just a new beginning. Perhaps the new beginning of a spinoff show . . . but let's not rush it. A spinoff could never be as good as the original anyway i.e. Joey from Friends, Tabitha from Bewitched . . . .

The show had a great ending. I wished that the show's finale would have been extended to 2 hours like most of the other networks do for their season or show's finale. I was sad to see Phoebe and Paige die; but delighted when Piper brought them back alive. It would have been great to see more of the future of the Charmed Ones. How and when Phoebe and Paige got pregnant and added to the Halliwell family. It was somewhat disappointing not to see Pru come back with the other family members. All in all, it was a terrific run for the Charmed Ones!! Sad to see them go. I am looking quite forward to the re-runs.
