(S03E25) The trailers promised us that someone MAY not survive the season finale and they were right. Someone MAY not have survived. But the MAY and the plot history of The O.C. is what puts it all in question. There was most definitely a jilted ex-lover. And definitely a serious car wreck. Definitely an explosion. And most definitely it looked like a main character said their final, unrecognizable words before they stopped breathing. But the MAY is still there. Why?Because it was Marissa. A few of us had a pretty strong feeling that it was going to be Marissa who got killed off. Not so much because her character was lame, but because rumors had been circulating for a while that Mischa Barton was tired of being on The O.C..
Well, it certainly did look like she was dead. Volchok drove her and Ryan off the road during one of his drunken "please take me back Marissa" rages, and the car flipped over. Ryan wasn't hurt too badly and he was able to pull himself out of the vehicle, but Marissa looked virtually lifeless already. Ryan picked up the half-dead Marissa in the EXACT same way he did when she ODed in Tijuana during season one. He laid her on the ground, and was about to go and get help. But then she mumbled that she wanted him to stay and he did. Moments later she appeared to be taking her final breaths and then her eyes just went blank.
So, is she dead or what? I sort of have a feeling that the producers of the show don't even know. I think that we can assume that Marissa is dead, because Mischa wants to leave the show. But I feel that they left this "maybe" in the air in case by next season Mischa might want to come back and/or her contract won't allow her to leave. That's why I'm not totally convinced that Marissa is actually dead. I mean, let's face it, Marissa fuels the show. When you look back over the entire history of the show, she's had more storylines and more love interests than anybody. She pretty much is the show. She is The O.C.
What will happen in The O.C. without Marissa Cooper? The teasers for next season hint that her sister Kaitlin will be the new force of The O.C. Do you think that's likely? Perhaps, the show won't even focus on Ryan, Summer, and Seth in college next year and instead will follow the lives of Kaitlin and a new crew of high school friends. It might be an interesting twist. Although, I must say that I hope I'm not still writing this blog if that happens because Kaitlin is sort of a hard name to spell without double-checking it every time.
So, if Marissa did die, what does everybody think about it? I had an idea it would be a car crash, but I was really hoping for something more glamorous like a coyote attack as a homage to Mischa's real life problems. You know, a ton of people have died on this show. I use to think that it was lame that Luke just ran off to live with his gay dad in Seattle, but now I see that he might have had the classiest exit of all the cast members.

BEST. EPISODE. EVER. Seriously. And I knew it was coming. Just awesome. Show has been reinvented... I am actually looking forward to Season4 - which halfway thru Season3 I would've thought impossible.

I really don't know what to think, I sort of assumed it would be Marissa dying in this episode, mainly because she announced it, and also because it had been rumored that she wanted out of The O.C. Anyways, after the show ended..it didn't go into any forsure sign that yes she is dead, or no she isn't dead, I agree it kind of left it open, which makes me agree with what you are saying. I hope deep down she isn't dead, and that she comes back. I personally don't think her dying off the show will be a good thing for The O.C., but I could be wrong. Once again though, she is the show basically. Look at every problem, or most, and they usually had something to do with her. I just don't feel it will be quite as good or interesting without her. It would be the same if any other main character would be killed off the show. Sort of like 7th Heaven without Eric or Annie..it just doesn't seem right. Oh well, guess we'll be waiting until November to find out...I for one wish it were sooner!!!!!

"I mean, let's face it, Marissa fuels the show."
Uhh, naaa. Marissa is the most unlikable of the characters on the show that the audience is suppose to like. I guarantee if you go to any OC message board on the internet, and put a poll up as to which character they like the least, Marissa will win every time. Again, I am not including people like Oliver and Theresa, but between the "fab four."
With that said, The O.C. has infact jumped the shark with this really terrible episode. To me, the O.C. is a dramedy which really only slightly takes itself seriously, the spiderman kiss, the valley, and the moments where Josh Schwartz will talk to the audience through a character are examples of this. To kill off a major character considering the overall tone of the show, just made no sense. Caleb and Johnny were minor characters whose deaths really don't matter. But to handle a major character this way, and remove any future possibility of Ryan and Marissa was just wrong and a bad idea, especially when you could have just sent her off somewhere like they have done with countless characters before. I've seen every episode and own both season's on dvd, but I think I might be going to Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip this fall.

Couldn't they have squeezed the whole cast into that SUV?

The show's strength lies in Seth and Summer. If they don't understand that, and try to introduce a new cast of 16 year olds to play with Kaitlin next year, they can kiss my viewership goodbye.

I figured if they decided to kill anyone, it would involve water skiing and a shark. Car crash or drug overdose would have been my second choice.

I just wish Mirscha Barton the best of luck in her future endevuors. But the things what makes "The O.C." so great are those tennagers from California. But another things is, if the "The O.C." was on ABC-TV's lineup next fall, the hour leading in to "Desperate Housewives" on Sunday Night, or the hour leading to "Grey's Anatomy" on Thursday Nights would have been the safe bet.

I'm so sad right now. Marissa did hold the whole show together, even though not many liked her. You have to admit that she was the epicenter of the drama on The OC. Personally, I think this is an awful ending to the last episode. First of all, what's going to happen next? Summer and Seth are going to Rhode Island, and Ryan is in California. Unless the show does some serious flip-flopping between coasts, the show will be so boring! Second of all, if Kaitlin does make it her turf now that her big sister is gone, who cares? Kaitlin is not a good character, and no one liked her these three seasons, so why would they like her now? The only reason that I would like the show next season, is if Summer, Seth, and Ryan didn't go to college due to Marissa's death and they just stayed in Newport, grieving. If you split the remaining three of them up, there's no point in watching.

P.S. Johnny was way too beautiful to die, but now he and Marissa can bang each other in heaven.

I was shocked and I don't know if I am in the minority, but I liked Marissa the best on the show. I felt that Ryan had become an O.C. Snob and always seemed to have another girl to fall in love with whenever he and Marissa were on the outs feeling no pain except during the Oliver days. The O.C. has really only shown the pain that Marissa went through. I am hoping that some small miracle happens and Marissa isn't dead. I know the show won't be the same without her.

I will be really mad and quit watching if this show follows Kaitlyn next year. It will be like they are just copying Laguna Beach if they do that. Seth and Summer are definetly key and the mystery of Ryan and Marissa was too.

As much as I don't want to believe it... I cannot believe they killed Marissa off the show!!! That was the stupidest thing they could have ever done! She's the fuel for the show!!! As annoying as her habits became, Marissa was still great!!! I've been a loyal fan since day 1. If they have decided to take the show in a totally new direction with following Kaitlin around...then I guess there's one less person watching the OC. I think they better pull one of those "surprise" twists and BRING MARISSA BACK!!!

uh... the MAY went to WILL starting on Monday. The first preview said MAY but it changed this week to WILL NOT SURVIVE! Even then, i don't doubt that they could change it. this show has been pretty bad for quite a while. i have been watching it ever since it came out and really loved it first season and was ok with its sophmore slump, but now its getting out of hand. this is possibly the worst episode of the season and they tipped their hand that marisa was going to die the entire episode. its like a high school junior wrote this script. maybe schwartz has been sick and someone else has been ghostwriting for the last season. i dont know, but im not sure i can handle this next season. katlyn might be what this show needs to save it, i dont know.

This show has jumped the shark for me for the last time. I'm done watching. It's not interesting anymore, and the writing quality is bad compared to what it was the first season.

Lame ending. Ryan's mom gave him an old rollover-prone SUV with no airbags ... that's just asking for something like this. Secondly, how could Ryan not have a single cut or bruise and yet Marissa die? Seems unlikely. And why didn't he try to call 911 or something? And before that, why didn't he stop driving so Volchok couldn't run him off the road? I would have come to a complete stop and gone the other way or something ... it wouldn't be hard to out-run that old POS van, but then again, thanks to Ryan's mom for that SUV.
If they do try to do a new cast around Kaitlin, I'm not sure it'd work because there wouldn't be a connection between Kaitlin's circle and the old Ryan/Seth/Sumemr one. And what will they do with the Cohen parents since they have no younger sibling to be a part of the Kaitlin angle? Ugh.

Oh, and I agree with the previous posts. What made this show interesting was the whole "bad boy comes to the OC," but now it's just lame. That angle is over and the show has lost its focus and purpose. It's sad, because I like the actors and characters, but there's only so far you can take it.

I really liked Marrisa on the show, she definalty improved a lot as it went along. Just look at the Marrisa of Season 1, that girl just could not act, but from Season 2 onwards it looked like they forced her to get acting lessons, and it really paid off.
Did they make the right decision killing her off? No, it seemed a bit cheap IMO. And the show has revovlved around her antics this past season, and it has been all the better for it. It really recovered after Jonny left, and the show has had a much stronger second half. Ryans gone from Reble to Middle Aged, and Seth and Summer get tiresom after a while. It's sad to see her go, but I believe next year will be a lot better. Josh, who hasn't been hands on invovled in the show since Season 1, is coming back full time, so the show should return to its funny, guilty pleasure fun.
But still, The O.C has continued to be a solid entertaining 40 minutes this season, but I just hope they lighten up next year.

I just might start watching the show again. Having watched since day one, about a third of the way through the season I just couldn't take it any more. The show had become lame, lame, lame ... and I HATED Marissa Cooper! I think that they should forget about Kaitlin and just bring in a new love interest for Ryan.
