I'll confess to this -- I did cry after watching Elliott's homecoming footage. I'm not the type of person who typically cries at a reality show montage, especially for one involving an Amish leprechaun (as one reader expertly described him.) But I'll fess up to crying tonight. I sniffled and thought, "man, it's going to be sad when he gets eliminated tonight." But then I shrugged my shoulders and remembered ... I don't like Elliott. Never have. But my tears were real, and not faux like Ryan's sexuality or Paula's boobs. I am slightly embarrassed that I broke down so easily. But hey, you gotta admit that seeing his mom choke up during Elliott's parade was a tear jerking Music/Variety/Game Show moment.
It was a good send off for a kid that nobody really thought would make it this far. (Oh, except Paula, of course.)
I was surprised the vote was so close this week. Taylor did not windmill over the competition as I would have hoped. In fact, the votes were so equally split that all three contestants were only separated by a fraction of a percentage point. I'm not great with math, but I know that when you gotta break it down to decimal points, then that's some serious crap. I was pleased that Ryan decided to make Elliott's elimination a little more respectful than Chris' poor send off. Acknowledging Elliott's mom in the crowd was a lot more pleasant than Chris' slap on the back last week.
As far as the show was concerned, I think this was one of my favorite shows of the season. Elimination nights are normally tedious and painful, but tonight was actually fun and enjoyable. I absolutely loved the footage of the contestants in their hometowns. We really haven't gotten to see the more personal side of the contestants since way back when we learned that Gedeon had a creepy affinity for metaphorical oil paintings. I did feel sorry for Katharine and the fact that her hometown is Hollywood. It was sort of a lame homecoming with it only being a few minutes away. But the high school kids at her alma mater did a good job feigning explosive excitement. But I don't blame Katharine for her lame homecoming footage. You just can't compete with the South. You have to admit that Southerners love parades and musical performances that take place in shopping malls. I'm from the South, and I know, we just eat that crap up.
Speaking of Katharine, I need to set the record straight. I like her big butt. Sure, I point out that she has a lot of junk in her trunk whenever possible. But I do the same with Taylor's gray locks and Elliott's donkey face. But I never said that I didn't like her delicious rump. I hated Mandissa's genormous fat ass. It was just too much, almost comical. But I like Katharine's curves. I think she's sexy. But you know what's not sexy? Paula crying. Ugh. It looked like she dumped olive oil on her face. I once thought that Tammy Faye Baker's tears were the most hideous display of liquid emotion in television history. I was wrong.

I was watching Access Hollywood two plus hours before the LIVE airing of AI when they announced Elliot was out. The reporter on Access said 'I can't believe Elliot didn't make it.' AFTER showing only clips of Kat and Taylor the night before. If only the poll counter and Ryan know up until the announcement, how did this guy know early Wednesday afternoon. Something weird.....

As much as I'd love to, I'm not gonna dwell on some kind of conspiracy theory of how Katherine managed to make it to the finale. What I WILL say is this:
Taylor has already won, in my mind. There is NO WAY that Katherine is better than Taylor...NO.WAY.EVER.POSSIBLE! I'm sick that Katherine managed to make it into the finale; we all know how inconsistent she's been and how contrived Tuesday night's "Rainbow" song was. Taylor *IS* this year's AMERICAN IDOL. I now don't need some finale to tell me that. End of discussion.

This may be too long, so forgive me. The AI voting system guarantees close results, even if the number of people voting for contestant far exceeds the number of people voting for another contestant.
Why? For any given second during the two (actually four) hours of voting there are only "x" number of lines available to accept votes.
Just to make it easy, let's say there are 1000 lines per contestant available to register votes for any given second. If one contestant has 1100 people call in that second, he/she will receive 1000 votes. If another contestant has 2500 people call in that same second, he/she will receive 1000 votes -- so 1100 or 2500 counts exactly the same.
The only real way for a contestant to "gain" a small number of votes would be if for one second a contestant received, say, 950 votes, and the other contestant might receive 2000 votes. In this case, the more-popular contestant would pick up a grand total of 50 votes.
The bottom line is that the number of votes counted may not be anything close to the number of people who try to vote for a more popular contestant. Be prepared for next week's vote to come down to teeny-tiny percentages.
Mike

I agree with you that this was one of the most entertaining AI shows and I'm talking about the entire five year run. Instead of it being a 'sorry, you're voted off' kind of an exit, it was more of a congratulatory send-off for Elliot.
I don't recall any other contestant being as proud and completely happy with his accomplishment. He showed he is a true gentleman last night and even if you never voted for him, there was a feeling of being glad that he was there among the final three.
I thought all three contestants were at their finest when performing last night. I'm sure it was partly due to the fact that they weren't going to be judged about it.
I still think that, vocally speaking, Katharine has a better trained voice with much more range than Taylor, but there's no denying that the leader of the 'Soul Patrol' captures the audience in a way that no one else did.
With Elliot out of the running, it's easy to deduce that many of the Yamin voters will turn to Taylor and give him the edge over Kat. I agree it will still be close, but I believe that Taylor's got this one.

Mike, You're a genius! Or, at least you paid attention during your statistics unit in high school. Wow! Now I feel so dumb for being all impressed that the voting was so close. DUHHHH. So, next week will go something like this:
RYAN: Ladies and gentleman, this week, we've had the HIGHEST number of votes in AI history!
AUDIENCE: (thunderous applause)
RYAN: AND, your next American Idol has won by the closest margin ever! Let's look at the numbers.....
Audience: (mumble mumble,oooooooohh)
RYAN: Yes, ladies and gentleman, can you believe that only a .0000000000000000000000001% difference between Katherine, and your next American Idol TAYLOR HICKS!!!!!!
RANDY: (barking like the village idiot)
PAULA: (head explodes)
SIMON: (yawns)

I like Kat's butt too, but the funniest thing was their Ford commercial with the 3 of them dressed as elderly versions of themselves and Kat's butt the size of an F150. Priceless!

I didn't appreciate your article at all! I thought you made some rather nasty remarks about Elliott, Paula, Gideon & Mandisa. I won't make any more comments about that but I think people can read between the lines. As far as Elliott goes, to me he had and still has the best singing voice of any of this year's contestants and I know he will go far. Maybe you should learn to write about people's talents and not the way they look and the way God made them!

I tried to vote for Elliott the entire two hours and only got through one time. I think the show is rigged. Kat does not deserve to go to the finals. She is smug and if she wasn't so pretty, she would have been gone.

Is this the same Katharine that we were seeing all season???...She looks better, moves better and sounds better than ever. BUTT, I think Taylor's gonna take it this year. He's just more of an entertainer and will be more likely to sell records. And while I'm on the subject of record sales. Clive, what were you talking about ???.... Fantasia?....who's that? Ruben?....I love Ruben....On bread with saurkraut and a cold mug of beer...I think Carrie and Kelly are the only ones that created a REAL lasting memory......but that's just my opinon. I should talk, I was voting for Kelly Pickler ("Look Ryan, theres a picture of a pickle with my face in it")..So cute.. Who, btw, I think we'll be seeing on CMT next year when her AI contract is up.....I'll tell ya what I miss......Nashville Star....Now there was some awsome talent. I do believe that anyone of those contestants on that show would blow away any "Idol" I saw. So Yeee Haww and good luck Taylor

Wow, you all really need to look at this through a political lense. There was an article from a political consultant that explained just why Chris got knocked off, and it was pretty spot on, it was because the people who had voted for Paris the week before were not likely to vote for Chris, Chris voters, it looks like, were evenly split amongst the last three, now we need to figure out who Elliot voters will support.

It was sad to see Elliott go wasn't it?? He is a true gentleman & has a good heart - especially for his Mom. I thought it was great that he took her with him around his hometown. I found it VERY peculiar how Taylor & Elliott had huge crowds of strangers gathered for their homecoming & Kat had small groups, including one group being family members. I hope Taylor snows her over! And I do believe, as someone else said, the voting is fixed. I highly doubt they were all THAT close!

All I have to say is that I cried my eyes out when Elliot got knocked off last night. In my opinion I really thought that he was going to go all the way. Although I do believe that just because he was kicked off doesn't mean we wont be seeing him anymore. He has an excellent voice so somebody is going to scoop him up fast. I will be the first one to go out and buy his cd, too. At this point I'm not sure if Kat or Taylor is going to make it. For some reason I think that it would be a joke if Taylor made it because I see him as way more of a karaoke singer then I see him as American Idol. Then again I'm not sure if Kat has what it takes either. I do think that she'll be picked up and signed by someone as well but either way it still should of been Elliot. I don't even care to watch the show next week anymore. The final showing is going to be horrible without Elliot.

Well Its always satisfying to see the top two you have chosen from the first time you saw them during their initial auditions! I feel like I could go into music producing or something...cause this is another IDOL I've picked the top two from the get-go! Even though I think Elliott seems like such a lovely amazing person....he is way too stiff and his songs are a bit boring. They all sound exactly alike. Was it Simon who pointed that out? In that he needed to loosen up? His voice is good...but you really DO have to have that IT factor these days. The entire package. I actually do think Mandisa would have been in the top 3 or 4 had she not gone the 'religion route' and to her credit, she stayed true to her beliefs and background. She probably had the most powerful voice and talent out of them all. But to make fun of her body--as one posting suggested....come on....you can't do better than that? Shows a total lack of class AND intellect when they stoop to that level. Taylor and Kat make a cute pair--would love to see them sing together and next week hopefully they will. I have loved Taylor since he fist sauntered onto the floor with that mouth harp of his! I remember thinking 'now THIS one is going to make it to the final two' I hope he wins and if you dont vote....you can't complain about the outcome you know!!!!! Katherine might sell more records (you heard Clive Davis say 'WHEN we record together')than Taylor, that will remain to be seen....but I think Taylor is more humble and most polished as a performer--it helps to have had a band of your own and a gazillion gigs in your pocket. But he is a total entertainer--eat your heart out Joe Cocker! GO SOUL PATROL! aND kAT--- please stick with the bluesy songs ala Norah or Diana Krall even--you will go very very far! and I'll even break down and get one of your CDs (ps....give your Dad a hug--he is so cute with all his tears and such...nice to see!)Taylor...I'll come to one of your concerts!! What a fun night that will be!!!

My favorite part of the show was at the end when Clive Davis was talking, and the camera cut to show Simon playing with his lips, like he was just ever so bored and much like my 2nd grader will do when she is bored.
Yes, I said playing with his lips.

America has voted and Kat is in the finals, so get over it Jen (see Mike's post for why the vote was so close). And since she's in the finals, that means she has a chance to win it all next week. Boy, I bet that really torques off you and all the other venemous Kat haters out there. Too bad.
I wish Elliot the best of luck in the future. His music was not to my liking and I never really supported him, but he seems like a good man and I wish him well.
As for Taylor, he's OK but not great. Doesn't strike me as an American Idol. But America will soon decide and then we'll all know. Of course, if butt size counts then Kat wins in a landslide :)

Hicks is arguably the better PERFORMER, but not the better SINGER; he is limited to blues-rock as a singer. Katherine is the better singer, but not the best performer. Interesting match-up. Same ol' sorry TV Squad commentary on Kat's behind instead of the show.
