I just got done watching Al Roker's Diner Destinations on the Food Network; in the show, Al visits diners all over the country, including a couple in my diner-heavy home state of New Jersey. During the show, he makes huge burgers, pastichio, and other dishes that would make a cardiologist woozy. But he doesn't eat any of it. Why? Because Al's had a stomach the size of an egg since he had a gastric bypass operation in 2002; if he did partake in more than a few bites of any of the high-fat meals he cooked on the show, he'd likely get violently ill.
So why does Al continue to do specials like this? I mean, I'm not a skinny guy myself; just the sight of all that yummy greasy food was sending me to the refigerator (don't worry, I got an apple... honest). I can't imagine the willpower he had to exert being around all that stuff in person. Maybe it's the "if I eat this I get sick" incentive, but I can't be sure. One thing I do know, however; if I were Al, I'd stay away from the food and do specials about weather or something.

I think it is because he know were his audience want's to see him. Helping on the food segments was what he did on Today before his GP surgery. It is where people want to see him. I doubt many people would watch Al Roker's Healthy Living Hour.

Al Roker really displays serious willpower at all the restaurants he visits. But I?d liked to know what happens when the cameras are off?
I bet it?s a feeding frenzy on par with Discovery Channel?s Shark Week.

Hmmm, I don't think he'd get sick. He had the surgery years ago. Yeah when you first get the surgery done, it'll hurt, but years after, that shouldn't be the case. And I thought your stomach can still grow. This is just what I've heard from friends that have had it.

A buddy of mine had that stomach surgery. Yeah, the stomach can still grow. In fact, one reason my buddy swore off carbonated beverages is because the expanding gas can/will streach his stomach enough to allow room for more food. From there, it's a short trip back to 600lbs.
I can't look at Al since he lost all that weight. He just doesn't look right.

I am a Gastric Bypass patient myself.. once you are operated, it is not about having willpower, the thing is that phisically it is impossible for him to eat and digest normally.. so, it is not such a big deal.

Hello:
I know why Al is doing food specials and cooking greasy foods for in his TV show which he himself may not be able to eat: money! Is that not a “no brainer”? He may not be able to eat those junk food, but his audience must be salivating for them and his show is raking in greenbacks. As long as his show is raking in dough, who cares about the health ramifications?

I always liked Al Roker, even tho he had Gastric Bypass he can still eat, its all about prortion control, nothing too sugary, starchy or fatty. I like Al's shows and will continue to watch them, I too will want to eat the Ribs or go to a diner. He is very likable and people tune in to see him, no matter what his size!
