Well, it's time to start shifting all my DVDs over again to make room for yet another Simpsons collection. According to TVShowsOnDVD (via ToonZone), the eighth season of the show will be out on August 15. Like the last two sets, this one will also come in a "head case," this time shaped like Maggie's head. If you're like me and prefer something more "shelf friendly" you can also purchase the less fancy regular-shaped box.
A lot of great moments came out of this season: the divorce of Kirk and Luann Van Houten; Homer becoming the voice of Poochie the Dog; Ned Flanders losing his mind and checking himself into a mental institution; the Simpsons hiring a nanny who looks and acts an awful lot like Mary Poppins; Homer's first encounter with a gay man ("He didn't give you 'gay,' did he?"); the introduction (and farewell) of Homer's pal Frank Grimes; Sideshow Bob reuniting with his long lost brother Cecil; and Marge taking a volunteer job at the church while Homer tries to figure out the mystery of the Mr. Sparkle box he found at the dump. Albert Brooks also returns as a guest voice for this season in the episode "You Only Move Twice" as the friendly but evil Hank Scorpio:
Hank: Uh, hi, Homer. What can I do for you?
Homer: Sir, I need to know where I can get some business hammocks.
Hank: Hammocks? My goodness, what an idea. Why didn't I think of that? Hammocks! Homer, there's four places. There's the Hammock Hut, that's on third.
Homer: Uh-huh.
Hank: There's Hammocks-R-Us, that's on third too. You got Put-Your-Butt-There?
Homer: Mm-Hmm.
Hank: That's on third. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot... Matter of fact, they're all in the same complex; it's the hammock complex on third.
Homer: Oh, the hammock district.
Hank: That's right.

Aha, the season where the bad shows began outnumbering the good ones. Some gems like the Albert Brooks and the Bob/Cecil episodes, but also a lot of annoying, unfunny crap, like the Poochie episode.
I also think it's the last season where I watched "The Simpsons" religiously every week. After that I just tried one or two a year, always amazingly disappointed at the hollowness and lack of humor in the shows.
As a matter of fact, now I remember: the horribly grating, completely awful Mary Poppins show was the last straw. I LOVED Simpsons musical spoofs, and own both of the CDs of original episode music, but the MP episode was such an embarrassingly bad, tin-eared retread, it turned me off of the show for weeks afterward.
I own seasons 1-7 on DVD. I'm not sure if I'll bother with 8, but I know if I do, it'll be the last one.

Well, I guess some people actually enjoyed "The Loop" too. Me, I thought the Sherri Bobbins episode was pure genius, particularly Sherri getting wasted with Barney in the living room, and then getting sucked into a jet engine just as the kids ask Homer if they will ever see her again.
Also, I still hum "half-ass job" to myself while I tidy up my house by shoving crap into closets or under the couch. And in all seriousness, I think "Barney the Boozehound" is my all-time favorite Simpsons songs.
Bart: "Dad can I be a boozehound"
Homer: "Not til your fifteen"

I liked the Poochie episode. I can't wait to see in the commentaries what they have to say about the parody of Simpsons fans at the Poochie press junket.
Also, I've heard that John Waters and Kelsey Grammer are going to sit in on the commentaries during their episodes.
This season does have one of my favorite one-line jokes: "Maris?"
