(S05E22) Smallville really takes a lot out of you with the season finales. They take the concept of a cliffhanger and just screw you up the butt with it. Yup, I said it. I feel a little bit sodomized after tonight's episode. It's the same thing every season -- the long, drawn-out climax and then ugh...it sorta hurts there at the end.
And, this season's finale was no different.
Yes, Lex did obtain super human strength after he was sucked into General Zod's spaceship, but no, he did not fly. Everybody was pretty super-hyped about the flying speculation (me included), but it did not happen. At least, not in this episode. There is always the season opener to let us down as well. I must say that while I absolutely loved this episode, I wish there was more of a showdown between Lex and Clark while Lex was still (mentally) himself. I felt like their fight scene was way too short before General Zod took over his body. By the way, I felt like it was all very Harry Potter-ish for Zod to need to inhabit a body in order to reign doom on the world. They made a point of saying that Zod's body was destroyed so he could not return, and from what I gather, that was not in the comic books. (Comic book nerds, please drop some knowledge.)
I liked the Chloe/Clark kiss, but I also hated it. It was a pretty shocking/didn't see that one coming moment, but they've smooched before. Plus, I'm so over Chloe at this point. She needs to just explode in a horrible freak disaster or become a lesbian. Also, I found Lana absolutely annoying in this episode. She isn't really good, and she's not really evil. She just seems dumb. Why does she feel the need to discuss relationship woes while the world is coming to an end? Plus, I don't get why Zod (in Lex's body) smooched Lana. If Zod doesn't care about people then shouldn't he have pushed her off the building or something?
Next season could go in 8 million different directions. Having Zod wreak havoc on so many cities at once is very Superman-ish. So, is Clark going to become Superman soon? What does Zod want with Lois and Martha? Why does he have them all jacked up in a plane, and isn't that pretty similar to last season's finale with Lana in that helicopter? Is Lionel (who's housing Jor-El) going to take on Lex (who's housing Zod) in a match to the death? How is Clark going to get out of the Phantom Zone? And, did Lex's penis size increase when he gained super powers?
All things that we must wait months and months to be answered.

This was definately one of the best cliffhangers I've seen. I can't wait to see what happens.. it really could go in so many directions. I think maybe the reason behind Zod kissing Lana is because he knows of Clark and her's relationship...perhaps more salt in the wound of already occurring events to torture Clark? Just a thought. I didn't quite understand if he got into the "phantom zone" on purpose or what.. totally confused me when he took off after it? and then they show him floating around like that. Either way.. can't wait for the season premiere.

Zod body was never destroyed in the comic books or the movie. I didn't understand how Clark just kind of ended up in the phantom zone either. Did he run towards it? I mean you can see comeing dumbass get out of the way!!!!

This one really stings. I know this may stretching, but if you try to remember back to the movie Supergirl (I know said, try, it was hard for me to watch also) Supergirl also gets trapped in the phantom Zone, I forgot how, but she does get herself out. It was like some sort of black hole world, but somehow she found an exit. Maybe because she was a good person or something, who knows.
I really liked chloe but this season they literally turned her into a plot device charechter. We all know she isnt in the later world of superman, so I wish they would just do her justice and kill her off. Maybe she could be some sort of sacrifice or something that brings Clark out or send Zod back.
I also thought that Zod was into Lex in a sort of "and you shall be me queen while I rule this place .." sort of way.
Very little Fine in this episode.

By the way, it's "wreak havoc" not "reek havoc," unless someone did something particularly smelly.

Clark got blasted/forced into the phantom zone. Or Zod made the Zone suck him in. Either way, he didn't go in by choice, just look how he went in like he was either hit really hard or being pulled against his will.

Yeah, the episode was great, as it uses to be in smallville finales. I think the classic superman soundtrack in the end rocked, the worst part was again Lana, she is so useless...
Thanks to the wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phantom_Zone you can check how they escape from there in previous references (movies and comics)
Enjoy your read :)

Let's face it, Smallville isn't really any good. We watch it because we want to see what they do with the mythology elements and how they tie it into Superman as a whole. We want to see Lex go evil.
Sadly the show is full of nothing. It's gone beyond any realms of believability at this point. Lana is just a complete waste of time, she was supposed to be the unobtainable love interest but once they got together she just became the idiot who got clonked on the noggin week in week out - more so than before - perhaps her stupidity is the concussions catching up on her?
Chloe was interesting in that she actually did something and had a character, however now she has turned into a plot device allowing Clark access to any piece of information he needs since she can seemingly access and computer records on Earth without any difficulty whatsoever. In addition Veronica Mars does everything that could have been cool about her but far better, funnier, etc.
Lex Luthor is frankly a pussy and his father is far more interesting as a villain. I know they say keep your friends close and your enemies closer but having him and Clark know each other so well just doesn't work.
Lois Lane - Lana 2.0 'cept spunkier.
The kicker is that even though we know the Clark Kent/glasses disguise was always weak, Smallville offers nothing, he's Superman in jeans but stupid. The fact that Chloe had to see him catch a car in an impossible way before figuring it out is just mind boggling.
Each year they string us along with filler episodes, occasional glimpses of Super powers shot in bullet time then smack us around the head with a Superman-Lore filled finale before sorting everything out in the first episode of the following year then ignoring it until the next one.
I still watch it though.

Honestly though, how many season cliffhangers can Smallville do with SOMEONE stuck in a plane or helicopter that about to crash down!!!! I count three times so far Lex (plane), Lana(helicopter), Martha and Lois (plane). Also have you noticed they are ALL Luthor planes or helicopters. Let's hope next season people figure out if it has "Luthor" on the side of it don't get in!!!!!

I hate the season cliffhangers because they are so good.
If this show follows the superman story arc Lana should die/become horribly hurt because of what lex/zod does. Thus making Lex hate Superman/Clark and cementing the mortal enemies part.
Don't forget (I think) Jor-El created the phantom zone. Perhaps it is not the hell it was for Zod when Clark is in there and maybe he learns his superman powers in there. Maybe the show can advance to be the prequel to the new movie and we finally get to see clark becoming superman.
As for Chloe I think she's getting hotter as is Lois. Lana is falling out of favor because she's an idiot. But somehow she still can kick anyone's ass. Weird.
So I see Chloe or Lana actually being killed off next year.

First off I totally agree with Thomas. We watch because its Smallville not because its written well. They throw us some good eps like Reckoning then give us this crap finale!? Where is the action? So is Jor-el an idiot for giving Clark the instrument to Zods return? I hope next year is the last if they cant write any better than this. So Clark can spin Chloe around in a split second, catch a flying car but Zod throws the Zone 100 yds past him and he stands there and goes duh?! Oh and who wasnt thinking/hoping Zod was gonna kiss Lana then toss her off the side of the building? THAT would have been cool. Basically though the writers have made damn near dumbed down everyone on the show. I know I'm ranting but it was the finale. I even read all that crap on AOL. Finally I did love Chloe taking advantage of the situation and getting her smooch on. Mucho pts for that one!

I say kill off Lana, let Chloe move to a superficial and eventually disappearing role (like Pete). It's time to focus on the Lois/Clark relationship a bit more. Lois is, after all, destined to be the reporter at The Daily Planet.
Although the backstory of Superman: The Movie is kind of twisted a bit now that they know each other long before Clark comes to Metropolis and joins the staff of The Plant, he'd still have his secret. But how is he going to suddenly just "put on glasses" and not be recognizable in the future as Superman. He doesn't wear them now, so anyone who knows him now should recognize him later.

How anyone found the finale boring is beyond me. Again you expect so much out of smallville forgetting it's not quite superman...yet!
For the "duh" person who said why couldn't Clark get out of the way.....Zod has powers just like Clark does, same with those 2 aliens that came out of the spaceship season 4)....It was shown to us in slow motion because had they thrown it in super speed we might not have caught what was thrown at him, it happened in the season 4 opener too. He caught on to that thing stuck on the floor to prevent him from going in, at the barn there was nothing to hold on since he was by the window.

Someone mentioned all they didn't like about smallville but still watch....I don't get that!
As for the Superman disquise it's just who superman is...it's funny yes but no different than any of the other huge super heros like spiderman....that voice who wouldn't know it was peter parker....Batman...it's not even a full mask. The hulk (sucks) but at least turns into something else...The show strings us along because it's just that a show....no different than any other show. Yet it keeps you watching!

I was thinking maybe something happens to Lois to make her forget? and Clark goes to Metropolis after her? And they fall in love again? The smallville writers did mention it won't be like Superman...

i think the reason he didnt push lana off the building is because you have to remember he was trapped in the phantom zone for a long time so he surly wants to have a girl by his side

I don't think they can really kill Lana off. See, Aneette O'tool(Matha Kent) played the part of Lana Lang in the third Superman movie so I don't think she is going anywhere anytime soon.

I thought this episode was one of the best, if not the best episode of Smallville I've seen. Hopefully next season will be even better than this one. This season was loads, LOADS better than the previous ones.
The show's gotten a lot more watchable since Clark and Lana broke up, so two thumbs up for the writers for giving us that.
