So, last night, Chris Daughtry was voted off of American Idol. And judging from all the comments we're seeing on other posts, this has not set right with America. People are up in arms that Chris, one of the strongest contestants on the show who rarely ever gave a wall to wall "bad" performance, would be sent home before Katherine (who has sounded terrible lately, even in that team Elvis medley last night), or Taylor, who makes "nice" music and seems to be a cool guy, but is more about party dancing than anything else (Simon is dead on when he says that too much of his stuff sounds like bad wedding singing or karaoke). But America voted and Chris is gone.
But fans have to remember something. It's not that Chris was voted out, it's that Elliott, Taylor, and Katherine were voted in. Because you call and vote for your favorite, and if Chris didn't have enough people voting for him, then he was going to go. And I think that's one of the problems with the show. I think that viewers should call to cast their vote for who they want out, not in. One of the reasons is that the way they have it now, fans can just flood the phone lines and vote for their "favorite," not the one who necessarily did the best. If they were made to vote for the person they wanted out, I bet a lot of people wouldn't take the time to vote twice or four times or six times. There wouldn't be this crazy concerted effort to keep someone in, and the numbers would be truer.

Major Band to Give Daughtry the Break of a Lifetime
May 11, 2006 10:55AM ET
Chris Daughtry will get an offer tonight to front a famous band. It will unfold on the television show 'EXTRA.'
Members of the band will appear on the 'EXTRA' set to make the offer.
In a stunning turn of events, Daughtry, who was the odds-on favorite to win the 'American Idol' competition, was booted last night.
Daughtry will appear on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS FM radio show in Los Angeles this morning, where the 'A.I.' host, who is in on the secret, will urge the singer to watch 'EXTRA' tonight.
TMZ knows the name of the band, but we're sworn to secrecy. But trust us, it's a big deal. Watch 'EXTRA' tonight.

Sigh. My wife's comment, "I'm not watching this show any more!". Even money that about 10 million will agree. Watch the ratings drop.

I am with you that the voting should be for who you want out and not who you want in. It is especially hard at the start of the show when there are so many contestants. If you want someone to go you have to call 11 times to vote for everyone but them.
I also think that when they reveal the results each week they should also announce the percentages that each Idol got so that American knows who needs more votes. I would LOVE to know how close it was between Chris and Kat.

What a bunch of babies! It's a freakin' TV show! If you love the show, why would you stop watching it? I love the show. I will continue to watch. It just made my night so much more enjoyable to watch the stunned reaction of everyone on TV! HA! Greatest "HOLY SHIT" moment on reality tv...

Yeah you guys need to calm down. The public voted and Chris didn't move on. The public decided that those 3 deserved to move on over Chris. Just because you have a different opinion doesn't mean your opinion is right.

Chris Daughtry should NOT have been voted off. The voting rules will have to change for the next season. I hope American Idol recognizes how unfair the way in which the voting is done today can and has unfaily left someone out. Chris's potential exceeded that of the other contestants. Chris deserved to win, without question. Is there anything we could do to change this?.....not sure.

eh. come on.
i felt similar rage after jennifer hudson was voted off.
but i think that voting for who you -want- rather than who you want -out- is extremely important. no way is that format ever gonna change. the idea is to find a person who generates excitement, not hatred.
chris suffered from 'sure thing' syndrome. you're sitting at home and you see chris pull out a good performance, but one that's not that different from what he'd done before. you say to yourself, 'ah, that was good. his fan base will continue to support him. no need for me to vote.' meanwhile, a million people are saying the same thing and picking up the phone for elliott, who was astonishing because you saw someone fighting for the win, not just coasting towards it.

Voting someone out changes the nature of the show and makes it mean spiritied -- so bad idea. Besides at this time in the competition, the final four is not a bad place to be at and if he sincerely has a lot of fans, he will be big. As Clay aiken has shown, you don't need to win to be successful

Yup, it had to happen. People get complacent about the "sure things" and call in to vote for those who seem to be in danger on a praticular week.
I suspect part of the reason Kellie stayed as long as she did was because of some of the "nasty" comments from the judges and others. People love an underdog and figure a frontrunner can take care of himself/herself. It's not over until it's over.
I suspect last night's "bottom two" scare will help Katherine.

I think what everyone fails to remember is this is a talent show not a miss congeniality show. If the general audience that voted on this show would remember that, they definitely wouldnt have voted Chris off. Here's another thought there were several of my co-worker's, myself also included who were not able to get through to either of Chris's phone numbers. Said this number has been disconnected. With that said, my question would be; is this a mishap or are the American Idol producer's manipulating the votes?

What is really creepy is that a lot of comments (elsewhere and on tvsquad.com) seem to express a lot of joy at seeing people being surprised and disappointed. Really strange reaction when people get gleeful seeing other people lose out on something they want.

i don't know exactly how accurate this is, but the voting "results" are shown here:

you hardcore chris fans really need to get over it. all those of you that crowned chris the king long ago must have gotten as complacent as he had and forgot to vote or something. it seems the dude was just as shocked as you all are. it would have been nice had he shown some humilty, maybe thanked america for getting him this far?
you can't say the show was rigged, the producers did all they could to get him into the finals - you all just didn't give him enough votes.
it hurts because it's YOUR fault, america.
i liked chris at first, but the past few weeks he just hasn't done anything for me. i feel that elliot has been upping his game for weeks now, and it showed a lot on the elvis episode.
and the female chris fans that are upset men would vote for katharine simply because she's hot - you and the kettle are both black.

Did the public really not vote for Chris? Try dialing any of the numbers for any contestant and good luck getting through. Voting for the worst may help solve that, or limiting the number of votes accepted from one phone # may fix that, but I think they love announcing how many votes total come in each week.
Speaking of which, the line about more people voting for American Idol than voting for president is ridiculous. Bush and Kerry got 116 million votes combined - imagine if people could vote multiple times like on Idol.

"Taylor, who makes "nice" music and seems to be a cool guy,"
Are you serious? Of the remaining contestants Taylor is the ONLY one that seems to have music burning in his soul? Have you listened to the CD that he recorded with his own music? He's on American Idol so he has to sing the kind of music that they are offering but give me a break, this guy can sing the blues and there is nothing 'karaoke' or fake about him when he sings unless he's forced to sing 'karaoke' songs. Can you imagine Joe Cocker having to sing Rod Stewart songs? I think it might come off just a bit 'karaoke'.

The point of this show is really to:
1. Make money on advertising
2. Sell tickets to a concert tour
3. Sell a couple million albums
POINT 1 - On the voting method:
Considering item 3 above, the voting process HAS TO BE voting for the contestant you support. When people vote FOR their favorite, they are making a somewhat public statement about how they feel about an artist. To minimize cognitive dissonance after American Idol ends, they will consider buying an album for the artist they voted for. After all, people tend to think the decisions they make are correct and will act both consciously and subconsciously to reinforce and support the correctness of those decisions.
By having the contestant with the most "pro" votes win means the greatest likelihood for similarily high album sales for that artist. Hence, the current voting system supports the monetary motivations of the producers, even if viewers would like to vote people off.
POINT 2 - This is a talent contest?
Considering the motivation of the producers and the fact that the show is called "American Idol" and not "America's Best Singer", no this is not a talent contest, nor is it meant to be. American Idol is the search for the artist who can sell the most albums.
Chris has lazy fans. Lazy fans are not motivated to purchase albums. Lazy fans do not go out of their way to make a commitment, like voting, to their chosen idol.
This is not a talent show

Chris was a one dimensional singer with a small fan base. White male rockers. He joins Bo and that other guy. No large appeal. Not a bad singer, not an idol. Many better singers were voted off sooner.

I don't see how changing the vote from "dialing for the best" to "dialing for the worst" would change this from being a popularity contest. People would simply vote for the person they feel is the biggest threat to their beloved contestant whether they are good or bad.
Those Chris fan girls/boys who reveled when Constantine got the boot last year now have to swallow sour grapes. Don't worry, you will survive.

Chris was an OK singer at best. Elliot has a much better voice and Taylor is more entertaining. Chris is in the Bo Constatine class. For rockers he's great for others he , well boring. Everything always the same.
