Usually I'd go ahead and use the comment section for our posts to mention something like this, but I really think I'm onto something here. After seeing last night's episode of Lost, I've got some thoughts on what's going on with that weird black mist, the island "security system," as Rousseau called it.Recall in the episode titled 'The 23rd Psalm', where Eko confronted the black mist, face to ... mist. Looking closely at that scene, we could see flashing images within the mist, clearly images taken from Eko's memory. then, in last night's episode, we see many of the same images flashing in Eko's dream.
Now, consider for a minute who among the Losties has confronted the mysterious black mist. Besides Eko, we know that Locke clearly had a close encounter with the mist. Jack has also had an encounter with the mist, as has Hurley and Charlie. Now, think about who on the island has seen "apparitions" or had very surreal dreams.
The conclusion, in my mind, is that this black mist is not only able to read the minds of the people it comes into contact with, but is also capable of either implanting altered memories into the minds of the people or actually forming itself into forms that the people can see. Eko saw his brother. Jack saw his father. Locke, Hurley and Charlie have had the dreams.
Other Losties have had some strange experiences, of course, which leads me to wonder if the mist simply has read the minds of everyone already. To take it a HUGE step further, consider for a moment that these flashbacks we're seeing, the ones where everything seems just way too coincidental, are also implanted or altered memories by the mist. Possibly a side-effect of how the mist works, which many have already theorized consists of millions of nanomachines (which makes the most sense to me).
I could also see that this is how the Others know all about the survivors and whether they are "good" or not -- they have access to what the mist sees. And this is why the mist is called a "security system," as it helps weed out who is considered "bad" for the island (or for the world, for that matter). I could see later finding out that the Others read the information gathered from the mist and make their judgements of people based on that, though they may be to quick to judge based on the random information they see.
It's very possible these ideas have already been discussed to death, but I really think the combination of 'The 23rd Psalm' and the '?' episode hint very much in this direction. Let the arguments begin!

How origninal. Wait, didn't I say essentially the same thing earlier today in my post on the lost ? episode forum?

All this nontechnology stuff is really out there, but the black mist has really been gnawing at me and I don't see how it's all going to tie in. There are so many loose ends that I have to keep watching even though every episode seems to add some other mystery. But back to the mist and your theory that the Others access the mist and determine who's good or bad. "Henry" said he came for Locke because he's good and the Others took all the children who we can assume are young and innocent. So, why are the Others gathering all the good people. Also Mr. Friendly said that as long as the Losties stayed on their side of the island they'd be left alone.

You are correct, this is not original. Although I'm beginning to believe that there seem to be two groups at work, the others, and the black mist. One seems intent on keeping the losties away, and the other seems to only draw them closer.

Sayid and his girlfriend both saw Walt, did they encounter the black mist too?

In fairness, I doubt that much that is said about this show is original, because SO MANY PEOPLE LIKE IT. Me included. Good topic, nonetheless, Alan

Simply put, McDuffee, you and everyone else who espouses the nanomachine theory is a moron. Sideeffects of the mist, haha, this article is almost as useless as anything Bob Sassone writes.

I find the many endless theories funny. And if you are right, what do you get, a cookie? A free, 2 liter bottle of Sprite? I say just 'watch'. Sheesh. NO ONE has NO CLUE what the hell is going on, so all these theories are just that, THEORIES. How funny will it be with the bajillion theories out there, no one will be right. I really don't see how anyone could possibly know what is going on, without being the writers of the show. They have the vision, not us. And to guess what they are going to do, well, that's just a waste of time unless they directly tell us what. So please, sit back, relax, and enjoy. You will drive yourself insane thinking about it too much. Besides, it's just a TV show, no million dollar prize if your theory is right. Yea, you may have bragging rights, but in the end, no one will care and no one fall at your feet worshiping you for getting it right. LOL..Ok, I'm done...

Ben -- It's all in good fun. What *isn't* in good fun is taking the time out to bash people who want to share theories. Sheesh, indeed.
You bring up one good point, though. Imagine if the writers of this show actually reverse-steal (for lack of a better phrase) ideas from fans? Imagine they have no idea what will happen next on the show, and then use fan theories to know what NOT to do next, just to stir the pot over and over again.

interesting theory, dickless. how can the mist implant "apparations" like michael, or black horses in peoples heads if they arent the ones who have confronted the mist, according to your theory? and if the mist could read everyones minds, why would it bother to confront only lock, eko, hurley, jack and charlie?

What if Locke, Jack, Hurley and Charlie (Michael et. al) are all the same person? There has been a reference to everything being someone's (Hurley's) hallucinations. On this lastest episode we saw Locke's dream in which Locke was Ecko. A dead priest sends a message to his brother (Ecko) by having another guy dream he is Ecko? Isn't this a major stretch of credibility?
I am convinced that the only way for the producers to rescue Lost is for the whole thing to be someone's hallucinations. Jack was the only person visible in The Hatch on the screen in the Pearl Hatch.

I actually like parts of your theory. I was thinking something similar, although I was thinking all the flashback scenes are memory implants and that none of the people on the island ever lived the lives they believed they lived. And that the black mist is also an implant, or better yet, a side effect of memory manipulation.

The monster may have been created by the Dharma Initiative but, it might not be under anyone's control because one of the writings on the blast door map says:
(You can click on the link to see the map)
"Cauduceus Station believed to have been abandoned due to AH/MDG incident of 1985
or
possible catastrophic malfunction of Cerberus System."
Here are a few other things that refer to Cerberus (or the monster?)on the map are:
"Alleged location of #4 The Flame"
"But unlikely due to Cerberus activity"
(And towards the right of the Swan-
"Primary nexus of Cerberus related activity"
(And above the last one there was something in Latin that translated to "Here be dragons", it is possible it was written by Desmond and he thought the noises sounded like a dragon or it appeared as a dragon to him.)
There was another Latin phrase that translates to "lift up your hearts" three times.Didn't Desmond say to Jack "you've got to lift it up"?
I know this will just add to the "endles theories" and I know "in the end, no one will care and no one fall at my feet worshiping me for getting it right" But damnit Ben isn't that part of what's fun about a mystery show; seeking out every little clue, listening to and discussing theories with other people, being able enjoy the same episode the second time because you get to see things you didn't notice before.
I love the mystery, spirituality and even the flashbacks. If you don't want to have that extra "Lost Experience" that's fine you don't have to and you don't have to put anyone else down for how THEY enjoy the show, and the more I see Hanso,Oceanic or any Lost related websites the more it seems some questions will only be answered outside the show.

Yes, John, Amen! Let's keep adding to the endless theories, digesting them and talking about them again. Who cares how "original" they are. This is a TV blog, not a competition for the Pulitzer Prize. Let's keep it all in perspective.
If you don't like the show, don't watch and don't post insulting remarks to others who post here. Names like "dickless" are totally unnecessary and give the person who uses such names zero credibility.
The people who post here simply want to about, share and analyze their theories and ideas and they should feel free to do so. No one is claiming originality or seeking worship. Just because *you* think you thought of it first, or read it somewhere else first, does not make it less relevant or interesting to someone else.
So please, let's just stick to talking about the show and our ideas and save the insults. Hurling insults at others certainly doesn't make you seem smarter or more original. It makes you seem less so.

I had a theory that perhaps the "Others" are not bad. Maybe they figured out they were test subjects for Dharma and stopped pushing the buttons. Destroyed the other hatches. The reason they take the child is to protect them from Dharma. Some how they stay under the radar. And they are so hostile to the Losties because they do not know who is in on it and who is not. And instead of the mist, did anyone stop to think what could be in that food from Dharma. and why did Desmond take injections. Just some thought. I logged into the Hanso sight which is an Anagram of Noahs( dont know if it means anything). its a weird sight, it you sign up for the new letter it logs you into Dharma if you have password: breaking strain. There is also a # 877-Hansorg. Very strang messages.

I began believing 4 or 5 months ago that I believe there are two groups of OTHERS Good OTHERS & Bad OTHERS Another thing the pilot epi Destination LOST, we see Jack's eye, next is Vincent and I think the OTHERS did something to the dog from the very beginning. Vincent seems to show up most times when something happens. The dog is probably a mole.
'I saw the criticism of theories 'by a poster. That is freedom of expression, I accept that, but I see it as people communicating, thinking, writing, sharing. This is very good and healthy for us; better than fighting or going out to shoot someone. It's fun too. These are good skills. We are critiqing and that is actually required in many college courses(theater, dance, voice, philosphy, music for the classroom teacher, and many others); and for certain jobs. It's also freedom of speech, but done respectively. It is also helping many to become good listeners. I for one didn't know much about electromagnetic field, I started reading up on this. I also shared my knowledge of organic chemistry eg. the sulfur smell when Kate took a shower sulfurs & disulfurs covalence bond. Are 36 chemical RxNs. Sawyer reading good literature, that encourages people to start reading more I believe, developing better thinking skills. There's more to LOST than meets the EYE. Thankful for the freedom of expression. I'm a maniac totally addicted to LOST forever.

I haven't read every post - so perhaps someone has already thought of this....
Sayid and Shannon fell in love - Shannon dies...Hurley and Libby - maybe not quite in love, but on their way, Libby dies....even Ana Lucia - having sex w/Sawyer- she dies....those who met on the island and fall in love (or lust) end up burying the female - so Kate better watch out!! Charlie and Claire made a nice pair - I hope she forgives him - that whole plot was out of whack- he's a good guy. The Others keep wanting children - but they have females- can't they make their own children?? Perhaps there is something biblical about the others wanting children - suffer the children to come unto me....

i think someone has discovered a way to bring back the dead, and they control this information on the isalnd. they allow only good people to be part of the community. they brought back ecko's brother from the dead. then they drugged locke and made him believe he was dreaming when he was actually seeing ecko's brother.

I've been watching this show since it started and I've come to the conclusion that this whole thing is an experiment - I began believing that when the girls found the box of costumes in the hatch area that Claire was kept in when she was taken. I still believe it - further evidenced by the hatch the Locke and Eko found last week with the survailance equipment (by the way, if there is survailance equipment, there is, most likely, tape of Michael shooting Anna Lucia and Libby - I think that will be found).
There are a few things that puzzle me, however: 1) the mist; 2) the episode where the whole thing looks like it's dreamed by Hurley while he's in a comatose state; 3) how did the experimentors get the plane to crash on the island?????????? There are so many questions to be answered.
I really don't think any of our questions will be answered in the season finale because what would they do next year? We're going to end with another huge cliffhanger. It's going to be a long summer!

so srry if somebody already said this. but hears my theory about the mist. ya know how the french lady called it a security system? well i think she was using a play on words. HOW SECURE ARE YOU??? the mist always seems to show up when people are really freaked out. like when they all first crashed and everyone was really scared. or how if you run away from it it chases u. however if you face your fears it doesnt hurt you like how locke and eko faced it.
i also think the magnet is what was keeping everybody healthy.(you know how sometimes people wear those magnetic braclets to help stay healthy, same thing) anyway now that the magnets gone who knows whats gonna happen!!!
