It's always been a dream of mine to take a road trip to Tennessee to visit Graceland and Dollywood -- a white trash pilgrimage of sorts. I don't foresee that happening any time soon, so I'll make do with American Idol's homage to Elvis, and keep my fingers crossed for Dolly's night next season.
Everything about tonight was backwards -- the favorites sorta sucked, and Elliott finally found his moment to shine. My crappy internet connection keeps going out, so enough of the pleasantries...let's do this!
Elliott Yamin- Holy crap! Finally! Don't get me wrong, I've always hated Elliott and I still sorta do. But he really found the perfect moment to hit one out of the park. Every week, I wait for this kid to get eliminated and he keeps on keeping on. But tonight, he went for it. He had to have known that he was the underdog tonight and he threw everything he had into the ring. It was his John Cusack boombox-over-the-head moment and he nailed it.
He picked two Elvis songs that I've never even heard of, and made them both magical. In fact, the second song was absolutely amazing. But I'm thinking it's too little, too late. I can't imagine any McPheever Phans turning against their beloved big-bottom beauty in her hour of need, and switching to Elliott. Nope. Not gonna happen.
Chris Daughtry- Awwwww, Chris, you sucked tonight! Have you ever had a crush on someone and then you caught them picking their nose or like digging a wedgie out of their butt, and you become suddenly aware of their mortality? Yup, that's how I feel about Chris right now. Let me make no bones about it -- I want Chris to win! But, he did so bad tonight that I would feel guilty in defending him, so I'm not. He did suck. The first song, sucked and the second song sucked even more. It was just boring. He didn't start rocking out until the end of the second song and by then my eardrums were in full hibernation. And like Simon, I didn't enjoy his sunglasses at all. It made me realize that I don't like sunglasses on bald men.
Hey, speaking of bald men -- did anybody else catch a fuzzy-headed Michael Rosenbaum (aka Smallville's Lex Luthor) in the audience? I thought he looked pretty good. But, am I mistaken, or was he sitting next to LeVar Burton? I'm pretty sure I'm mistaken, but I'm going to go ahead and pretend that it was LeVar and they were discussing Michael's favorite episode of Reading Rainbow.
Taylor Hicks- He's pretty much safe. The first song was karaoke, but that's no big deal for Taylor. That's the sort of thing that we almost expect from him. His rendition of "In the Ghetto" was absolutely gorgeous. He's most def in the final three.
Katharine McPhee- Whew, not too good. Not good at all. And she knew it. She looked like she was going to cry during the final moments of the show. True, all the songs were written for a male, and this is like the millionth time we've had a male-centric theme night (more reason for Dolly night next year). So Katharine definitely had her work cut out for her. Her voice sounded alright, but she just looked distracted. And forgetting the lyrics during the first song?! That's a huge mistake this late in the game. But Katharine is pretty popular, and I think she's earned immunity from a bad night.
What I Think Is Going to Happen- Elliott is going to get eliminated. Taylor will be third and the finale will come down to Katharine and Chris.
What I Would LOVE to Happen- Elliott gets eliminated and Katharine is third. I would love, love, love for the finale to be between Taylor and Chris. That would be a finale this competition hasn't seen since the great Clay and Ruben face-off, and I would eat up every moment of it.
Random Queer Moment of the Show- Seacrest explaining boxer briefs to Chris by saying, "They're called hybrids. That's what we call them." Who do you think we is?

I loved Taylor. Elliott did great but may be to late I even thought Chris did good I liked his first song much better. Kat had a very bad night I don't think it will hurt her at this point. By now they should all get singing contracts so its more a popularity contest than a singing one. Chris will win because of that but I would love to see Taylor make it. Good luck Taylor

What *I* Think Is Going to Happen- Katharine goes home tonight. Elliott is going to get eliminated next week. Taylor and Chris face off in the finale.
What *I* Would Love to Happen- Elliott gets eliminated (finally). The three most talented performers duke it out. Although I think Katherine is light-years ahead of Chris and Taylor in terms of ability, she picks boring songs and performs them boring-ly...and that's her death-knell.

Do you really think Katharine is safe? I mean she really stunk last night. And I don't buy the "because it was a testosterone themed night" as an excuse. Elvis has plenty of songs she could have sang. Her forte is standing there and belting out a ballad, using her eyes, pouty lips and pearly whites, NOT dancing (term used loosely) and trying to do the PElvis move. At least we know Taylor isn't the best dancer but he tries and stil has fun. Katharine looked like she was just about ready to convulse or something. N E Way, I think Elliott pulled the proverbial white rabbit out of his hat last night and saved himself BIG TIME (at least I hope he did). And the fact that there is some hair growing on that noggin' of his def. is a plus. Last week I thought his time was up but Katharine has had 2 weeks in a row that were less than stellar (READ: Paris)so I think her time has come to 'leave the building'.

Katherine is gonna break down when Seacrest gives her the boot tonight. So much talent, but she chokes with regularity.
Hopefully they bring back Kellie so she has a shoulder to cry on....

Elliott was great last night and should be the next American Idol! I tried calling to vote for Elliott last night for two hours on two phones and couldn't get through once. If Elliott is eliminated tonight, I'm going to be real mad. Either something is wrong with the voting procedure or this is just a ploy to get more people to buy Cingular & activate text messaging. Evidently text messaging is the only way you can get through. Kat should be eliminated.

Kathrine is not focused on the lyrics of her songs. She is too aware of the camera and tries to be too cute. She winks and smiles at inappropriate times.
She is blowing her chances for good performances and deserves to be eliminated. She will probably be picked up by producers and advertisers and will have a career ahead of her.

I hate to see any of them leave. They are all special
in their own way, for different reasons. However,
Katherine is so beautiful she would be a great choice.

I think that Elliott was amazing last night and should stay. I think Katherine should go instead but I am not sure it will happen. The producers must be loving the fact that they ended up with 4 spectacular performers and the race is this close. I know I am!

It happened, LOL. I have always voted for Katharine but after Elliott's performance last night I had to vote for him!

I really can't think of many Elvis songs that can be rearranged to show off the talents and vocal abilities of an unseasoned young woman ..... Even as a man I am quite upset that week after week the women are expected to adapt to Elvis, or Barry or Kenny or Rod ... why aren't the men asked to sing Whitney, or Dolly,or Barbara, or Celine .... really isn't fair ....

After last weeks surprsie of Paris being voted off nothing is safe anymore. I would personnally like to see the final two being Taylor and Elliot i,m sure they have to work harder the other two have a gift and forgetting lyrics is not a good sign ... i think Chriss and Kath have a future without Idol.... so let the underdogs have a chance at winning ....Iwould love to see Taylor go to the end with his grey hair and crazy dance steps ....

Whitney, Barbra and Celine have voices most female singers can't compete with (as evidenced by earlier Idol episodes when the women failed miserably with their renditions of Whitney songs)so asking 'unseasoned' singers, male and female, to sing any would be a train wreck also. I was just saying that Katharine has a voice that should be used for the slower, sultry songs (Love Me Tender, One Night of Sin, I Want You I Need You I Love You) when she can just sing and sing and sing and never hit a wrong note. Her mom is a vocal coach, has been her coach her whole life so she isn't that unseasoned (nor are Taylor or Chris, both in bands of their own. Katharine is a great singer, just not a great entertainer. She can sing the phone book (as long as she remembers the words) and have it sound good, just shouldn't try to rock and dance.

Even though I am from Richmond Virginia, I have never been an Elliott Fan either. He has a spectatular evening and the judges even commented it was the Best performance of the Competition. Dispite all that, Elliott doesn'
t have the fan base or following to keep him past this evening.
Chris and Kat had off nights, but their loyal fans should keep them around. Taylor will go to the next round easily.

I think Kathryn is going out the door...I can't believe that she would sing those songs..She has such a wonderful voice..But can't remember the words ??..That's not good..As for Taylor, he's good, but not an idol..Elliot was outstanding last night, and is getting better..He and Cris should do battle together..

Well Lacy, I think you are going to be severely shocked tonight on the recap. I think both Katherine and Chris are at risk tonight and will be in the bottom two. And, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a major upset with Chris delivering the lowest votes this week, although I think based upon the performances, Katherine should be the one to
go.
Every week I have voted for Chris. Except last night.
Frankly, I thought he was boring and I was left feeling that his performances were very one-dimensional. This is not a good time in the competition for him to bring in a sub-par performance, which he did last night.
Katherine has a beautifully trained voice.
She is pretty. But, she has not been taught how to perform in front of an audience and that is a BIG mark against her. She doesn't seem
to understand how to present herself. She looks very uncomfortable in all of her performances and does not seem to connect emotionally to any of the songs. The complaints of her being forced to sing songs
created for a man is bogus. If you are a true entertainer, you make the song yours. Quite a number of songs that Elvis made famous were written by women, for women.
That being said, I vote based upon who brings it on the night of the performance and both Katherine
and Chris didn't last night. I don't let my nether regions guide me(as you have suggested in past columns that is what you do).
Last night, the clear winner of the evening was Elliott. He brought the electricity through the television the Chris did early on. That second song he sang was AMAZING. He has come a long way
and is the most improved out of the remaining contestants. I have always thought that the final two would be Chris and Taylor, but now I am not too sure. If Elliott steps up to the plate again next week as he did this week, I think it will be a Taylor/Elliott showdown.
