(S02E22) Aren't great finales so bittersweet? I'd been excited to see this episode all day, though at the same time I was sad that the season would be over, and we'd have to A) wait until next Thursday to find out if this show is indeed making it to the CW network, and B) wait for the new season to start.Though I thoroughly enjoyed this season, I have to admit that most of the reveal of this episode was a tad disappointing. Why? Because a bunch of us guessed this would happen long ago. Well, not all of it, but the "big bad" of the season. One thing that surprised me the most about this episode was the amount of unanswered stories left hanging around. What was with Meg's dad bailing out Lucky? What's going to happen to Weevil? Why did Cassidy take Mac's stuff? What's Kendall doing in Keith's office? It'd be too cruel to not have this show back next season to answer some of these questions.
Something that none of us guessed was that Cassidy was responsible for Veronica's chlamydia, having raped her last season. That was in credible, that the writers took a major plot point from last season and placed it at the end of this season. I just did not see that coming at all.
So it seems LoVe are a thing again, which makes a lot of fans happy. I'm a little torn on the whole thing really, as the dynamic between Veronica and Logan has been great when they've been somewhat against each other. We'll just have to wait and find out next season what the summer brought those two, I guess.
So, any guesses as to what we'll be seeing next season? Word is that Mac will be a regular cast member (cool!), with the setting being Hearst College. I hope we finally see Lamb get what's coming to him next year; there's no way his story's finished quite yet.
*sigh* Now what am I going to do on Tuesday nights? Someone needs to make a show like this that gets a couple week breaks, max. Oh, what a happy world that'd be.
Until next season...
Quote of the episode:
"Where's your brother?"
"I think he took Ghost World up to his room. They're probably up there making loooove. Or playing Dungeons and Dragons. Or both. At the same time. They're both, like, 12th level dorks."
UPDATE: OK, I may have to make this the new quote of the episode. Thanks for the catch, Vince!
"CW?"
"It's a done deal."

And you don't actually have to wait until thursday to know if it is going to the CW they said in the show:
Duncan: "CW?"
Clarence: "It's a done deal"

Lamb was on the plane wasn't he? Keith said Lamb told him to get off at the last minute so he could have the press to himself when they got to Neptune. So that should mean Lamb is dead. Yeah that hit me after the episode was over.
You didn't mention Duncan taking out Aaron Echolls via what's his name from Kane Industries. We hadn't seen him since season 1 either. Plus that great dream sequence with Lilly and notice how VM kissed Logan, not Duncan in that dream.
That was one amazing season finale and if they don't bring this show back, The CW is crazy. I will have to watch this again tomorrow!

I don't think Lamb was on the plane. Keith flew to somewhere outside of Reno to track Woody down and then called the local sheriff. What I took from his explanation was that when they were making arrangements to move Woody back to Neptune Lamb asked them to take Keith off the plane, but Lamb was acting from Neptune. He wanted to show up at the airport and take Woody into custody, getting all the press for it.

Actually, I think it was confirmed on the TWoP boards that Lamb is not dead and he said he would meet Keith at the airport (when Keith was initially going to fly).

Beaver took Mac's clothes because he didn't want her to leave the room. She said he took everything... so I assume he raped her too? Am I wrong?
This is a great season finale. It did leave some unanswer question... but it also answered a lot of question. I cant believe it was Cassidy. I had no idea. I knew he was the "victim" but not the perp. I cant beleive he can be so evil. It was awesome because it tied in last season and this season, esp abt the rape. I think we have to have some unanswer questions for next season.
I love you Rob Thomas!

As much as I want VM to be back next year, CW was most likely for Clarence Weidman, the name of the Kane security guy from season one.
It would be great if it was a double meaning, but if not, at least it makes sense in the context of the series.

WowWowWow. Excellent ending. Last season's climax set the bar high but the rooftop scene passed with flying colors. Kudos to those commenters who first fingered Cassidy as the culprit. Really liked how they left a few storylines unanswered and opened up a few new ones (specifically Kendall and Keith), although that is assuming we get our 3rd season!!!
The only issue I have with the ending was the lack of discussion about the Kane Scholarship / Stanford. They built it up to be THE goal for V and then they didn't mention it once the entire episode. Yes, it's easy to assume that she missed the exam, she didn't get the scholarship and thus she's stuck in Neptune, but there are other options to pay for the school. Maybe there is something more (the Kendall/Keith line) that will put the final nail in the Stanford dream. dunno, but I wanted a bit more on that.
One question, I thought the dream sequence was a bit confusing. Was V seeing what her "perfect" HS world ending would have looked like and later realized (through dream Wallace's comment and the cheering she got when she did walk) that her life is good troubles and all? Just not really sure what was going on there.
anyway, cannot wait until next year!

MrAkai, ROb Thomas confirms in his Ask Ausiello interview that that is what the writers meant. However, they're still not 100% sure the show is coming back--more like 80%

I agree with you Keith, why did Mr. Manning bail out Lucky? The entire Manning storyline is still open. I believe he put a bounty on Woody to avenge Meg's death, but why bail our Lucky? I haven't seen it addressed anywhere.

I was spoiled and knew that it was Cassidy, but the fact that he raped Veronica was not something I would have ever guessed (or saw anyone else guess, except maybe one person? Man, I don't usually read message boards, but this show just sucks you in). That, more than anything else, was the big surprise to me. If the serial rapist is going to be the big storyline next year, as has been conjectured, I'll be interested to see how it plays out for Mac and Veronica.
Question, though: Cassidy built his portfolio betting against incorporation. That means he either knew that Woody's secrets would come out and Woody would be discredited or he was going to murder Woody and incorporation would die with him (unless someone's got another alternative; I just doubt we can chalk it up entirely to Cassidy's business sense). In terms of the latter--well, politically it seems like a politician's death usually pushes his/her schemes forward. Is that a gamble Cassidy would take? On the other hand, if Cassidy knew Woody would be discredited, why'd he kill Peter and Marcos for wanting to tell people about it? I'm not saying this is a flaw on the part of the show, but just that Cassidy's motives are even more complex than we thought and my god, CW, you better pick this show up.

Also: he took Mac's clothes and apparently also the sheets and quilt off the bed? It looked like Mac was wrapped in a towel. Where'd he dump her stuff?

Cassidy was blackmailing Woody to make the incorporation issue die. That's why he was betting against it because he knew Woody wouldn't want it to become public what he did. Which brought about the whole girl in the hotel room thing with Keith etc. He blew up the bus to keep his name out of it too.
I don't think he raped Mac because she was saying it was okay, we have all night, etc. He couldn't get it up when he heard that Woody was found and on his way back to Neptune. I think it was partly to keep Mac from leaving the room and the sheets were part of the shame from his youth. She was crying because how would you feel when you come of the shower to find your clothes, sheets, everything missing.
Doc, thanks for the explanation on Lamb. I didn't think they would kill him off but I hadn't thought everything through. I need to watch it again.
As for the Kane Scholarship, Veronica gave that up when she went to hear the verdict. She didn't take one of her exams so there is no way she got the scholarship. She mentioned how close it was prior to exams so that's how I took it.
I knew CW was the guys initials too but I like the double meaning to the phrase anyway. Normally they would have called him by name to remind us who he was since it's been so long since we have seen him. So I'm going to go with the other meaning to the phrase. :)

Yeah, obviously CW are the guys initials, but can anyone tell me once that ANYONE in the show referred to him as that?? Until tonight I mean.
MrAkai, its not like we thought that Duncan was pulling a 'Zack Morris' and breaking down that fourth wall, it was just a little nod included for those of us... I mean, for Vince, that were paying a little better attention.
Its one of my favorite things about Smallville (Not that the show has given me much to like in the last bit anyways), but they are CONSTANTLY throwing in little in-jokes and references and so on.

Damn.. Probably one of the best season finales ever.
I didn't actually remember the name of the new channel so I hadn't picked up the double meaning of CW but heh, Rob Thomas is a genius.
I think this episode goes to tie first place next to Tarantino's CSI season finale in my top list.
Love the fact that they leave questions unanswered and that they pick up old stuff without teasing us about it. And most of all I love the fact that everything is always so simple, you just need to know when to pick up which pieces. Thomas doesn't throw us off in a certain direction to just surprise us with something crazy. It's all there from the beginning for us to guess.
To answer Evadne's question: Cassidy was the one blackmailing Woody, the other kids never got around to it. He knew for a fact that incorporation was going to fail, one way or another. He registered the conversation with the other molested guys and edited the file himself, there was a flashback in this episode showing how he did it.
He killed those guys because he didn't want his name to be discredited, once he killed them he could threaten Woody even more saying he caused the bus crash because those two guys wanted to come out.
He didn't want to murder Woody until after the vote, hence why he said "now I have no more use for Woody" to Veronica.
