There seems to be differing opinions as to its origin, but the number 420 has been synonymous with marijuana culture for some time. It's a seemingly innocuous phrase that lets stoners speak freely of their exploits while around grown ups and other authority figures, like, oh, let's say Bob Barker. The Consumerist found a clip on YouTube (watch it after the jump) in which a young man on The Price is Right can't help but bid $420 on everything. Okay, that's mildly amusing, but someone should tell the kid that his "joke" pretty much guaranteed he wouldn't win, or at least would narrow his chances considerably. It would be like going on Wheel of Fortune and only allowing yourself to use the first ten letters of the alphabet. Also, kids should know that a marijuana reference is a gateway reference, and eventually you may end up referencing heroin on Jeopardy. Also, did Bob get the reference, or was he just playing dumb? I can't decide. He's old, but he seems hip. Anyway, check it out:

hi, the comment about gateway is incorrect.. let me try to explain what really happens.. so there you are a person looking for mary.. aha, you find someone.. cool man!! so after you p/u some .. for a couple weeks (maybe months).. oops you is out o' your stash.. call the deal guy who says sure come on over this afternoon..you arrive, deal has a long face.. didn't get any from the man,, oh my oh my, but wait.. deal man will give you FREE.. an addictive product to "tide you over" until he sees more of mary.. imagine!!! wow!! of course the product he has given to you FREE..is high test * not stepped on ** now, here you are doing a hard drug which you really weren't up for but, wait, now you NEED this product.. is it FREE still..you can bet your bippy, it is no longer FREE.. the price escalates and the "quality" de-escalates in strength.. so now you NEED more, are paying more for it and it is not even "pure" anymore.. all this because the ONLY PLACE you can meet mary is at a deal man's house..you know, the guy who pays no taxes..doesn't have job..and in no way contributes to the society in which he lives.. so there is your "gateway"
if this is inproper for this blog no problem..
