(S01E09) I totally hated the judge on ADA
Steele's case. He made my blood boil as he kept ruling against Steele and pushing for a lesser charge against a high
school kid who killed a classmate. I know I wouldn't have kept my cool the way Steele did. But, was he right to
continue with the murder charges? The judge's original offer for a lesser charge was for 1-3 years in jail. Steele
refused to reduce the charge, got his conviction (no thanks to the judge), and then the judge reduced the charge anyway
and put the kid on probation. Steele had to know that the judge had the ability to do this. He had to see it coming,
right? Or is he just so stubborn and self-absorbed that he can't see past his own nose? He didn't seem to be fighting
for the victim, rather for himself.I was enjoying the Christina-Nick go to acting class storyline right up until it got serious. Christina was so funny
and uncomfortable in acting class and Nick is robotic, until he starts freaking out to the acting coach about the fear
of being mugged. I guess that was the writers' way of wrapping up the mugging storyline that was going nowhere. Nick
realized he already let his mugger get away with the crime by not identifying him in the line-up. Hopefully that's the
end of the storyline. By the way, the introduction to Conviction had video of Nick imagining himself killing the
mugger. When the hell did that air? I've reviewed every episode and I don't remember seeing that anywhere.
We also had a shorter storyline with ADA Brian Peluso's case against a cop shooter. Brian's star witness turns out to be
stretching the truth and, when caught in a lie on the stand, he says something that Brian ends up using to convict the
defendant for the shooting. This is pretty much a throw-away storyline, except it reminds us that Brian is a righteous
man and there's more than one way to win a case.
Jessica Rossi's story doesn't pick up until the end of
the episode, where it becomes obvious that her father is drinking again and possibly abusing her mother. I think this
one was just a set-up for future episodes where Jessica will try, once again, to get her mother to leave her abusive
father. Either that, or it was just the writers' way of keeping her in the story. But, why did the recap in the
beginning of the show include her rape case? Nothing even remotely related to that was in this episode. Weird.

I think the stuff with Nick imagining the killing came from the episode after he got mugged. I remember seeing it previously.

I think they even started that past episode with Nick imagining vengeance. Was that the special Tues night episode they had about two weeks ago? They aired one episode in L&O SVU spot to try and increase ratings for the show.
Anyway, I actually thought this was one of the better episodes for Conviction because I was interested in all the story lines and I wanted to watch the show until the end. I can't say that has been the case in the past. Plus you hated the judge so much that you wanted to see if Steele would win or the judge would win. I bet we see more of "Coach" in future episodes.
I'm surprised by the number of shows I now tape on Friday night. It use to be a throw away night in some ways but now NBC and CBS have a half decent line up. Still, not something I would stay home for but definitely will set the Tivo for.

This show keeps getting better. The writers are finally writing great stories for these characters. They still seem unable to write anything substantial for ADA Cabot, which is a shame since Stephanie March is great in the role. I think what this series continues to show is that being an District Attoryney is hard work that requires compromise, political savvy, and a willingness to pick your fights. Steele, because he is so arrogant, picked the wrong fight. As much as anyone would want to see that little bastard go to jail, the judge was right: Steele's case was flimsy. However, what it also showed is that judges are often so egostitical they forget they are there to serve Justice, and no matter what that jackass of a judge thought he was not service Justice. I feel this is what makes the show so watchable. I also like that we get little peaks into the private lives of the characters. Something you never see on the flagship L&O and only rarely on the other series. I hope that NBC keeps it around. It certainly not burning up the ratings, but it's still a good show.

This show cooks. I imagine some exec at NBC came up with the idea of doing and Law and Order meets Grey's Anatomy. This is a good idea and, I plead most humbly, do not abandon it. The cast is very watchable and crackles with chemistry. I'm a long-time Law and Order fan but I actually enjoy the "soap opera" details of characters' lives and that the show rewards return viewers with continuing story threads. Don't take my new friends away, NBC!!! Stand by your instincts and let this show find its audience.
