(S02E16) This season's first so-so episode of
The Office started with a great premise when half a joint is found in the company parking lot, and the
volunteer Lackawanna County Sheriff's Deputy Dwight Schrute conducts his full (and borderline psychotic) investigation
as to who is the drug fiend.
Michael tries to diffuse the situation because he admits that, at an Alicia Keys concert over the weekend, he was handed the joint by a girl with a lip ring. Obviously, he's got a lot to lose if he fails the impending urine test, so he is doing his best to calm Dwight down while espousing the evils of drug use to the rest of the staff.
A subplot that seemed rather childish and didn't seem to go anywhere was Pam and Jim's
game of Jinx whereby they said the same thing at the same time, which somehow Pam wins and forces Jim not to speak for
the rest of the day until he can buy her a soda (I still don't get it.) However, there were some moments that they
looked into each other's eyes without speaking, and you would think their flirtation would come to some sort of climax
before the end of the season/Pam's wedding.
Michael eventually gets Dwight to donate his urine to help him pass the drug test. Dwight feels used, and resigns his deputyship. However, all is not lost as Michael rewards him with the title of "Official Security Advisor of the Branch." Of course, Dwight begins to take control, even asking for a gun. We then see Pam at the end talking to the documentary camera and discussing Dwight's relationship with Michael and asking what he (Dwight) gets out of it. She should be asking herself the same thing about her relationship(s) with her fiance Roy and Jim.
In any case, I didn't think this episode was so hot. The Office has been on such a great run this season that it would be natural to have high expectations for each episode. Let's just chalk this one up to a good idea that didn't really take off and hope for a return to greatness next week.

It was Jim, not Pam, who asked at the end what Dwight gets out of his relationship with Michael.
I thought the Silent Jim subplot was great. The "story" about his relative whose life was destroyed by drugs was genius. And the moment when Pam joked, "You look like you have something really important to tell me but can't," and Jim took it a bit too seriously, and Pam seemed to maybe notice, was one of the best moments between them.
But I agree that this wasn't one of the best episodes, on the whole.

Dude, Jinx is OOOOLD. It was a kids' game played out exactly as it did in this episode: say the same thing at the same time, and the first person to yell "jinx!" is the "winner." The "loser" then can't talk until (in the variation they used) he/she buys the "winner" a Coke. Other variations I've seen have the loser not talking until someone says his/her name three times.
They wanted to show Jim's devotion to Pam, echoed with Jim's hypocritcal denouncement of Dwight at the end, wondering how someone could have such blind devotion.

Not one of my favorite episodes, either, although it *did* have some wonderful JAM moments.
Especially the Jim and Pam scene near the end, where Pam nudge-nudge-nudges the can of Coke on Jim's desk. And I can guarantee you that there was a collective sigh of longing from women around the country when Jim finally says, "Hi."
I've added the story of Jinx to my Drug Testing page, along with a bunch of quotes. Come and rate the episode at http://www.officetally.com/?p=173!

The Jinx plotline was really cute, and emphasized the silly little office games that Jim and Pam play with each other, and given their relationship through out the show, this didn't seem at all out of character. You've really never heard the line "Jinx, buy me a coke" before? It was even mentioned in Seinfled once. I thought this episode was better than the last, and despite Dwight always being an exaggeration, he never fails to make me laugh

Oh and to poke more holes in your review, Michael's story at the beginning of the episode that the girl with the lip ring's friend said she was passing around "clove cigarettes", not joints. He was just afraid that maybe they weren't really clove cigarettes and they were, in fact, joints. Which was a joke in itself because Michael is apparently so clueless that he can't tell the difference between a clove and a joint and anybody who went to college and actually hung out with people could tell the difference between cloves and joints.
You also left out one of the funniest parts where Michael demands that Toby's hair and blood be tested in addition to his urine when Toby has to tell him that "Hookah" is not a controlled substance.
Did you even watch the episode? ;)
I agree on the whole though. Not one of the best episodes this season. Still, this average episode was still funnier than most things on television.

I loved this episode. I Love Jim and Pam, and the Jinx game was a perfect way for us to see how much they like each other. I couldn't stop laughing everytime Michael talked about drugs, It was dead on with every boss I've ever had to tried to be cool.
Poor Jim, caught in his love mess, with nothing he can do about it.

Michael, you've never heard of Jinx, buy me a Coke? Yeah, that's been around for a while. Yeah, there was a joke on Seinfeld once about it, the episode where the "Maestro" dates Elaine.
I loved this episode. The drug testing part was funny (and is Dwight a nut or what??), and the Jim/Pam subplot was rather sweet.

This episode had me cracking up! The Jinx thing was so cute. I will say "ditto" to what tanster said about it. Dwight's Amish heritage? Was the grandfather who fought with Nazis Amish? But the BEST part was when Dwight showed the picture of the marijuana to Creed.
Dwight: Do you know what this is?
Creed: That's Northern Lights cannabis candida
Dwight: It's marijuana.
Or something like that. I can't quite remember. That's the problem with marijuana. NO! It wasn't mine!

Tanster,
You are so right...when Jim finally said "Hi" my heart just melted. I love how they throw in a love story for us, but don't make it the main plot like in Friends.

The last episode of the season is slated to be "Casino Night," which Steve Carrell wrote. I'm starting to wondering if Pam's wedding will happen this season. I do think something big will happen with Pam & Jim in the next 2 (or 3?) episodes, though.

Bex: yeah, the Creed thing was hilarious! I was waiting for him to provide Dwight with an explanation, or for Dwight to immediately accuse him, but "WRONG. Marijuana" was funnier than I could have ever imagined. This show has really gotten the hang of the "introduce one great joke, only to follow it with a better one" formula.

Thanks, Bex!
Now I realize why I found that scene so adorable -- Pam nudging the Coke can reminded me of Tramp nudging the meatball toward Lady in "Lady and the Tramp"!

Consider me someone who thoroughly enjoyed this episode.
I enjoy the show on two levels: as a comedy and for the Jim/Pam relationship (I'm an old (young) romantic with a crush on Pam); and this episode satisfied me on both counts. I actually laughed more than I normally do.
I'm glad we have no more breaks until the end of the season; and I'm ecstatic (but not surprised) that a third season is coming.

How in the world can you think this was a so-so episode with as much Dwight was in it? With Dwight in an episode that much it's bound to be gold and it was.
I don't agree at all.

The whole Jim/Pam sub-plot was probably one of the best all season. I think I fell in love with Pam in that episode. The only thing that bugged me was how much Dwight went over the edge, it was a bit unrealistic (although still funny) to think that he had no office duties to perform.

I thought the episode was very good. I loved the exchange between Dwight and Ryan about getting the search warrant "the hard way."
Ryan. "Yeah, let's do it that way."

I too thought the episode kinda fluttered out towards the end, but did in fact enjoy the Jim/Pam subplot most :)
Funniest moment was Jim turning the interview around on Dwight. 'You said *I* would be conducting the interview when we first walked in!' Hehe

Shemp...when have we ever seen any of them do any office work? With a boss like Michael, how could any work ever get done?
