I was afraid of this. Sources tell me that
it doesn't look like there will be a second season of NBC's Surface. The network won't make the official
announcement until next month, when they unveil their fall schedules, but it looks like the show has ended. But let's try to save it! Yeah, these petition things often don't make a difference, but there's no harm. Here's the Save Surface on NBC petition. Almost 12,000 signatures so far.
It's a shame if this doesn't see a second season. It's better than Invasion and Threshold.

My family actually rooted for Nim. So sad to see this show end. Invasion is a terrific show too though. As for Threshold.. so glad it's already gone.

I think that's the problem with shortened-season shows like this one. Sometimes it takes a good season-long arc to really hook an audience - too short and they either don't develop enough or rush it through to quickly. Think about Invasion for instance - it took until recently to really hook viewers and move from "interesting" to "must see" for a lot of people.

It would be too bad if it does not return but it could be hard to figure out what to do in the second season. After all there are these animals that the government may have created that after they mature kill and eat everything in sight.

I'd LOVE to see another season of "Surface."
Although it started kind of slow and had some MAJOR scientific plot holes beyond the obvious ones (such as just HOW you build a conveyor belt that goes underground from Coastal NC to the Marianas Trench!) it became wildly entertaining and had some GREAT CHARACTERS and actors!
That said, I really don't see HOW they can do a second season, as the first one ended with a virtual "apocalypse." I mean, giant tidal waves rush in, bringing thousands (millions?) of giant, indestructible creatures that can live underwater or on the land and eat ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING... Production costs of a second season, alone, will be STAGGERING unless something I can't imagine at this point happens to eliminate most of the Nim-type creatures and they sort of start over with trying to fix this... But it kind of looked like a terminal single-season to me.
Threshold, on the other hand, while it appeared to have great promise at first, was absolutely TERRIBLE after a couple of episodes, then was starting to look better just before CBS pulled it (with even a few more episodes filmed but never shown).
"Invasion" is proving to be HIGHLY stimulating -- particularly coming right after "Lost" every week, and while it started REALLY slow, it's looking like the show with the longest potential run at this point -- especially now that the latest episode revealed the Air Force is aware of and studying "hybrids" and the Coast Guard actually looks "complicit." There's LOTS of potential "meat" there.
As long as there's good, compelling Sci-Fi on TV, I'm not complaining!

I love the show.. Some parts happened to fast almost like a mini series. However this show deserves a season 2.. A great cast of actors and actresses. The two main adult leads are so good working together. I also loved seeing repeats on the Sci-Fi Channel.. I think they'd show a repeat right before the new show would come on... Lets see season 2.... It can always land on the Sci-Fi Channel..

Better than Invasion?!?!? NO! Better than Threshold? Well that wasn't too hard as Threshold was like "X-Files lite".

I started out really enjoying Surface, but by about 2/3 of the way through I was only watching out of my own stubbornness and unwillingness to be driven away, and the SLIGHT shred of hope that it would redeem itself. The writing got worse and worse, and the acting was terrible. I, too, rooted for Nim and I kept hoping Miles would go completely nuts and turn into a half-man half-Nim and lead these creatures. Anything, ANYTHING to end the horrible "chemistry" betwen Rich and Laura.
Invasion, on the other had failed to hook me at first and later I found myself sort of wishing I had stuck it out because it looked like maybe it improved as time went on. I may actually make an effort to catch up so that I can watch the second season of that, because I'm feeling a distinct lack of decent sci fi on the air, especially with Battlestar on hiatus for many more months.

For those whom are arguing that Invasion is better than Surface... What are you smoking? I tried to like Invasion, I really tried hard but I got so bored with it. I just could not watch it anymore unless I wanted to fall asleep fast. Surface is awesome and it will go down in the books with have a following not too unlike Firefly.

Surface was very cool, new approach, very fresh and original, I guess they saw the end coming though, judging by the final eps... I don't think it's coming back, although I would love to have seen where they'd go from here...
Invasion is definitely an ok show. I like it, but not as much as I liked Surface. I think Surface had more "likability" because of Nim and the whole boy adventure thing. I hope Invasion will keep on bringing some good sci-fi to the screen.
As for Threshold... I liked the very first episode, the second was okay and the third, well, I won't use any expletives here... I really don't understand why they went the way of the cop...? It could have been so interesting to find out what the aliens are, what that thing above the oceansurface was, where they come from, but instead it's all a big post 9/11, patriotic gun and chase fest, completely brainless and clueless as to what makes good sci-fi. Rest In Pieces, Threshold.
We need better Sci-Fi!

I hope Sci-Fi channel can pic Surface up if its cancelled. and Invasion if it ever is. Im was hooked on both shows from the start being a sci-fi nut. Lost just reminded me of Survivor so I dont care for it so much, shouldve added a resident evil ambience feel to it from the RE games which wouldnt have been hard seeing its close already. Maybe if I had watched it from the first show. Anyway, lets hope Surface survies in some form.

If they don't bring it back for another season it would be nice to have a mini-series to finish out the show.

Why would someone go to the trouble of logging a comment to say that they don't like a show??? I don't like lots of shows, so I don't watch them.
Strange
I liked Surface. I would like to see it return.

I would love to see Surface continue on either the Sci-fi channel or NBC and continue to link the 2 like they sometimes do with BattleStar Galactica (another AWESOME show! But Agree about the shortened seasons....what is it with networks (major & cable) that are having these short or ODD seaseons?! I signed the petition and sent to all my friends. WE LOVE NIM!!!!!
