You know what they didn't have a lot of back in the old days? Lyrics. Yeah, I know that the lyrics of
most modern songs kind of suck. But never before did I realize how many times the chorus is repeated in older songs.
It had to be you. It had to be you. It had to be you. But they are beautiful songs. But the outfits
were ugly.
Not Rod, of course. He always looks sexy in his skinny, high-water suits. But Chris...
Chris Daughtry- I do find the man sexy, but not in an ascot. And it wasn't just an ascot, it was a deflated ascot. Did anybody else notice how flat his ascot was? I figure if you're going to wear something as queer as an ascot, you need to just rock the ascot at full-poof. No half-poofs. Plus, I didn't like the vest and super tight dress shirt. I don't know. I appreciate the attempt at dressing up the rocker boy, but it just looked like they took a suit, ripped it up, and threw a wallet chain on it. I say, if you are going to get dressed up -- go for your Sunday Best; don't put a half-ass rock n' roll spin on it. But he did sound amazing. That goes without question. Mostly everybody tonight was absolutely amazing. But we all know who did the worst...
Kellie Pickler- Whoa, she blew it tonight. It was squeak, squeak, squeak all the way through. And the song was not the best of choices. But she did look amazing in her sexy red dress. There were only two Kellie dumb moments, but they were doozies (plural form of doozy). Telling Rod Stewart, "you took a load off my chest" is a classic Kellie sound bite that I'm sure will be brought up Wednesday night. And she tried to get all dumb during the post-interview when Paula complimented her dress, but Ryan cut her off. Have you noticed that they have stopped dumb-baiting her? I think that is a wise move. She really did bomb tonight, but I don't think it's her time to go home. She's just too much fun to watch.
Paris- That outfit was all wrong. She didn't look like an American Idol, she looked like a woman going to apply at a temp agency. It wasn't costumey enough. And the hair was boring and drab. Forget about how well she could sing, I just kept wondering how many words per minute she could type. I felt like Kellie got the best pick of the wardrobe and the other girls got screwed.
Taylor Hicks- I'm sure everybody saw Taylor getting spoofed on SNL's Weekend Update. What a huge honor! That's almost bigger than winning Idol itself. I really liked Taylor tonight, but mostly just at the end when he started going nutty on the song. He should just go off like that all the time. And I like how Rod Stewart was defending Taylor's dance moves. Wanna know why? Cause Rod can't dance either. But my question is, who exactly is in the Soul Patrol? Is anybody out there a part of the Patrol? How do you join and is there a secret handshake?
Elliott Yamin- Sigh. Sigh. Sigh. Here's Elliott's problem -- personality. He doesn't really have one. Sure, he is a nice guy. But there are no sound bites. There's no SNL-spoofing potential. He's such a fantastic singer, but his personality just doesn't project. It's sad because he's a great singer, but this competition is about so much more than that. Elliott is going to be gone soon.
Ace Young- I didn't think I'd like the slicked back hair, but it was alright. It felt very '80s Michael Douglas, even though I don't think Michael Douglas ever rocked that hairstyle in the '80s. But that's what it makes me think of. I'm just glad that they went ahead and dressed him up 100%, instead of half-ass dressing him up like Chris. I thought Ace sounded amazing tonight, but...too little, too late.
Katharine McPhee- Once again...great song, but bad outfit. She's such a beautiful girl -- why did they dress her in that boring black pant suit? I guess I wanted more glamour. At least, a bit more color with her outfit. But I did think it was funny that Paula brought up Mr. Holland's Opus. My roommate brought up the same point. When I think of Mr. Holland's Opus, I think of "beautiful, beautiful, beautiful booooooooy."
My pick for elimination- Elliott or Ace
My vote- Ace (as a last ditch effort)
My favorite non-sensical sign of the night- "Chris Rock, You're #1"

"There's no SNL-spoofing potential."
It's funny that you claim this, because Kimberley Locke, one of the few AI contestants ever parodied by SNL, was also criticized by Simon as having no personality.
I fail to see how Chris baa-ing like a goat and sneering at the camera gives him any sort of personality Elliott supposedly lacks. And some of the others have a bit TOO much fake personality, if you ask me .
Elliott seems like a natural, real guy.

Great night of singing. Those songs showed off everyones real ability to sing. Katherine was the best, Chris & Elliot were clearly next & excellent. The rest must go home before these guys.

Catherine shold win but she needs more presence on stage. And the last song was beautiful, but like one post, the outfit was wrong. For her, I think a nice long sleek dress, hair pulled up, would have been the frosting on the cake.
I think Taylor should go. He can't sing without "jumping" around" and he ruined the last song.

Taylor ruined the last song? What show were you watching? Taylor, Chris, Kat and Paris stole the show between them. Kelly was the worst of the bunch but I agree she is too much fun to watch to go home yet. I keep waiting for people to wake up and realize that Ace does not, has never, and never will belong on that stage. Simon hinted at part of the problem, singing nasal, but the reality is that Ace is a Michael Jackson wanna-be. All his singing sounds like he is trying to be MJ and his personality is the most contrived of any since Constantine. Elliott... ok voice, totally boring. I think Ace should go home, but Elliott will go home.

The praise the 3 judges heaped on His Baldness, Mr. Daughtry, was laughable. Daughtry is the odds-on favorite to win, but he's a one-trick pony. This week he makes his way through a ballad, surprisingly weak in voice. Yes, weak! At least there was no mascara. And the judges pile on the praise, to justify (eventually) making him the 1st white male idol. Let's see, for winners so far we've had a white female, a black male, a black female, and another white female. Not to be a bean counter, but I think the AI folks want Daughtry to win to cash in on the 'edgy, hip' cache he brings, Nike-swoosh sideburns and all, and to show that anyone can win.
Personally, I think Catherine is the best singer, but just one week she needs to put aside her Doris Day girl-next-door goodness and wear something that shows off what appears to be a killer bod, and sing a vampy, torchy broadway song.

Come on Lacy and some comments - We finally had a great show and the only negative you could find is what they were wearing??!!
I have an all new respect for Kellie now - I loved the way she admitted to her poor performance and wasn't all cocky or defensive. I really liked that.
Kat looked like she was going to break out in hyestrics of laughter throughout the song - She is good, pretty, blah, blah,,, I just don't want her to win... Just don't like her.
Hey, anyone else notice how Simon is constantly talking to Paula during the songs??
Paula Needs to remove her hair from her eyes and cover up her VERY white boobs!!!
I missed SNL I'm so disappointed :-( Sounds like it was really funny.
I thought Chris did GREAT!!

Maria, you stole my thunder about Paula...PLEASE GET THAT HAIR OUT OF YOUR EYES WOMAN!
Chris did great...he's my pick to win it all.
Taylor...love him...love his voice, love his spaz dancing...so sorry I missed SNL too.
Paris...does another great job, but something about her just never stands out as my favorite...but I agree with Simon...please don't talk.
Kellie...She actually started great, and I was into it...but then it when crazy bad...but she admitted it, and I appreciate that more than those cocky ones who just say crap like "lets see what the audience thought about it." I think Kellie is safe.
Ace...thought it was his best performance since Father Figure. I think it saved him one more week.
Elliot...never got him, never will. Seems like a nice kid and he as an alright voice, but he brings NOTHING else to the package. Thought he was the second weakest tonight after Kellie's debaucle.
Katherine...Katherine...Katherine...she is like always on the edge of being AMAZING, but she seems to lose it in the softer notes and it keeps it from pbeing a perfect performance. Her bigger problem...her vibe. She gives off a very bad vibe. Who knows, maybe she is a warm and loving woman, but man she comes of as very cold and pretentious. It all started back in week 2 or 3 when Mandisa did that amazing performance right after Katherine's great performance, and all the other idols were standing at the railing applauding, and Katherine was sitting on the couch in the background and appearing to pout. It was the beginning of a bad taste in my mouth for her.
My pick to go home: Elliot

Lacy, that suit was classy,, song from the 40's she was dressed as the 40's when females were the most beautiful songs were wonderful .One could understand words in a song ,, and females presented them self as ladys , that when young lady's had roll models. not like today females have no decent roll models look how most of them dress, or don't dress ,

Just when I was ready to pull the plug on Kelly, she endeared herself to me with her self-deprication. She new her singing was tortuous last night, she took the criticism like a pro, and therefore probably saved herself for another week.
I think Katherine won it last night. All she has to do the next few weeks is show up.
Everybody really were quite good last night. I actually loved listening to the standards. Still love Paris, and thought she was in her element. I am SO over Ace. I think his biggest problem is he's been told he's gorgeous all his life so he plays that instead of really singing. I would be so gratified if he went before Eliott.

Enjoyable evening overall. Liked Rod from the tape.
All of the contestants did well from a competition standpoint, including "pitchy" pickler with her acknowledgement of it (and lack of put-on dumbness)
Hehehe, funny comment above about looking like a temp. I thought job applicant.
I think Simon is now "gaming" (influencing the results) with his comments. He is deliberately not being critical so as to not spur sympathy votes.
I think Kat's back in the running to win- but as mentioned above, needs to sex it up soon.
Still can't stand Elliot.
Bottom three- Elliot, Ace, Paris
Going home: Elliot.

Thank God! Finally a nite worth watching! I thought tonite was a good nite in general for everyone, except Kellie. I really do hope she is able to make her way to the bottom 3. She is utterly annoying & her personality is getting on people's nerves. I think Ace & Elliot will be joining her. Hopefully, it will be Ace's last night - can't stand his solemn looks during the eliminations anymore. He should be used to it by now! And for the person who said Chris's voice was weak?? They must have been watching another show. This song actually showed he can vocally sing well (and not scream or "warble" like some people complain about). Everyone did songs that were suitable for them & Rod was great with them all!

Unbelievable! So Kellie admits how bad she was and that should make everything okay? She indeed "butchered" (her word) the song and she shouldn't have gotten a single vote. Do not tell me that anyone was worse than her last night. Her fans are being completely biased by keeping her in this. The best performance last night was Katharine. I enjoyed Chris and Ace, too.

Lacy, there is indeed a very real "Soul Patrol", with a legion of members. Its main meeting place is on the "American Idol" message boards, in the "Taylor Hicks" folder. To find out more, come to the boards and get acquainted with us. You might even learn the "secret handshake".... :-)

I enjoyed the show last night, too....I'm a sucker for the standards, and Rod is a lot of fun. I'd taped the show and just came in for the recaps while it was live. Everyone was so raving about Katherine that I was really looking forward to hearing her performance. And was quite let down. I didn't think it was a good choice for her because it put her occasionally into her lower register...which is non-existant. She's a fine song stylist, but why would she pick something which had her vocal support dropping out whenever she hit the low ones? Any of the others she was trying would have been better!
But the worst thing was that NONE of the judges even mentioned the problem! I'm all for giving credit for past work, but to then have all three of them going on and on about how her performance last night was "making everyone else look like talented amateurs" and "so far above everyone else" "in a class by herself"....Good grief! It was as if they had decided in advance what they wanted to say (who they want to win) and have to stick by it, even when the specific performance doesn't merit it. Katherine and Chris may have the best potential marketing appeal, but to pad the praise to try to manipulate America's vote...well, Simon, I didn't expect that of you...
