(S05E18) About half-way through last night's
Smallville, my roommate suddenly proclaimed, "This is the gayest Smallville ever!" I don't
know about gayest, but it was pretty lame. It was one of your typical freak-of-the-week episodes that I wish
would've disappeared by the 5th season. But nope. In this (not so) special episode, Clark and Martha take in a
foster girl who has the ability to control glass, i.e. shatter glass, i.e. accidentally kill her
previous foster mom.
This episode marked Tom Welling's directorial debut. It's sort of hard for me to judge Tom's directing chops when the writing was so lame. There really wasn't a lot going on here in terms of plot, and I don't think that Tom helped things out in terms of direction. The scenes between him and the young girl went on foooooorever. Chemistry, they do not have.
Also, there wasn't enough secondary plot in this episode. Not enough of Lex and Lana. In fact, scenes with the glass girl went on for so long that I felt like I was watching a bad high school play. And I was even less compelled by the arrival of her wayward dad, Glass Man. I didn't care that he had killed her mom. I didn't care that he had robbed a jewelry store. I just sort of wanted them to kill each other. In the final showdown scene where the little girl takes on her dad, I wanted her to cut him to bits and then turn the glass on herself. But instead, Clark talked the situation down. Thanks Clark for the anticlimactic ending.
But this is the episode where Lex and Lana finally smooched. A lot of us (me!) have been waiting for this a while. I was excited about it, but I wish that there would have been more of them in the episode. There was only that one scene with them in the beginning where they almost kissed in the dorm room, and then the one at the end where they finally smooched. I would have liked a little bit more in the middle. A little foreplay before the climax. And, of course, Lana ran away after the kiss. After she ran off, my roommate predicted that Lex was now gonna go to the East Wing of his mansion and masturbate. I doubt that. A powerful man like Lex probably has someone on his staff to do that for him.
Also, if you saw last night's episode, you remember all the talk about the Project Mercury blog that Lex's team put together in order to hunt down Professor Fine. Well, it's real and it looks pretty cool. Check it out by clicking here. Supposedly, it's going to update frequently, and it's to gear up for the big finale, so I'd look at it often.

Has anyone speculated about Smallville writers just "mailing it in" because it's been officially decided in court that the rights for Superboy have reverted to Siegel's heirs (the creator of Superboy)?
Variety
What reason would there be to spend a dime more than necessary if licensing profits since November of 2005 go to someone other than Warner/DC?
I'm no expert. Perhaps someone could clear that up for me.
In the meantime, I wouldn't expect any seamless transition to Superman, again for licensing reasons.

Are they going to make Chloe gay? Lex's comment, "I beginning to understand why you've never had a boyfriend." And later Chloe says something about "the L word", which could have a double meaning of Lana and lesbian. Oh dear!
Looking long term, the only way for Lois to turn into reporter extrodinaire would require Chloe to get killed while investigating a story involving Lois. Lois, filled with guilt, would devote her life to becoming a reporter to honor the memory of her cousin who died saving her life.

The status of "Smallville" with regard to the Siegel heirs is still unknow. The question seems to be whether "Smallville" - which doesn't show Clark in a teenaged version of his Superman costume - is actually "Superboy". I do know that DC recently killed off both "Superboys" in the comics during their "Infinite Crisis" series, and speculation is that they did it because of the court decision.

Actually Superboys aren't dead, but thats beside the piont. Smallville doesn't have to be Superboy, he could be Superman. Superboy was in a different continuity that Superman. According to Crisis on Infinite Earths, there are/were multiple universes with different Supermans or Superboys, or none at all. But now they are (maybe) combined into one Earth, where almost everyone lives in the same continuity, so there is Superman and Superboy, together.

The show was a little different this time around, but as a huge Tom welling Fan I thought it was great to see him direct it. Maybe they started him out slow, he's not the first to have a show directed that wasn't as amazing as others. I did like the ep though, I loved his soft side, it was really cute.

I'm wondering if Lana is actually setting up Lex so that she can get access to his spaceship info.
NavStar: I was wondering the same thing about Chloe's sexuality. They would never actually take on a full exploration of that on a show like Smallville, but the writers might have left it up to the viewers to decide. Or maybe they were just trying to make Lex seem really sleazy.

At last...some passion from Lana. I think Tom Welling allowed Lana to show passion, something previous writing/directors never allowed. Actually, by the time Clark and Lana finally got together, it was soooo lame but last episode produced Lana as a passionate woman..and we've always known Lex had a "thing" for her..remember his dream, where he was married to her???' I loved this episode. However, to the writers:...the storyline with Martha as senator is bordering on the ridiculous. Please don't go lame on this series, as it has been one of my favs. Quality writing is mandatory and I think Tom's directing added a verve that has been lost since season three.
