Big Love: Affair

barb henrickson(S01E05) Can a man with three wives love them all equally? From what I gathered in this episode, it doesn't seem so. Bill and Barb definitely spent a lot of time getting busy with each other. One now begins to wonder why exactly does Bill have three wives anyway? He has made a few "Scripture-ish" references over the last few weeks, but it doesn't seem to make any sense.

It isn't a stretch to say that both Nicki and Margene are both major pains in the a**, are very needy, and don't seem very mature or capable of any independent thought. Again, after viewing what has been going on so far in these first five episodes, it seems that many of the "sister-wives" of the other polygamists we've come to know (Roman, Don, etc.) are extremely subservient to their husbands and are either "brainwashed" or just haven't been exposed to any other way of life.

This whole situation becomes even stranger when Bill and Don decide to call the Utah Attorney General's "Polygamy Czar" to alert him of Roman's suspicious activities vis-a-vis some shady real estate deals to unsuspecting senior citizens. As Bill said in the last episode, he's taking his fight to Roman, and things are going to get a lot heavier as the season moves forward. Seems a bit hypocritical when a polygamist tattles on another one?

Let's not forget that one of Bill's employees makes an accusation about Don and his family situation, which leads to a veiled threat from one of his wives about this employee's future at the company. Also, Margene has bonded with their neighbor across the street, which raises the ire of both Barb and Nicki about any unwanted attention about their living situation.

But it all boils down to the fact that Bill has true love for Barb, and is willing to go to extremes to be with her. (In fact, as you might gather, he's having an "affair" with his own wife.) Nicki has gotten very suspicious over Bill's actions, but announces at the end of the episode that "another soul" is about to enter the family. (One would guess that she's pregnant, but one can never be too sure about this group.) In additon, she actually shows some gumption by warding off the harassement from her brother Alby, who comes across as a ne'er do well son of Roman's who may be capable of doing harm to the Henricksons down the road.

There were more plot turns in this episode than a ride down San Francisco's Lombard Street, but this seemed to be the best one so far. Bill's fight with Roman is going to get nastier, and all of the attention being paid to polygamy should be coming to a head soon enough.
