Was that Brian Unger on Countdown tonight?

Yes, it was!
Brian
Unger, former correspondent on
The Daily Show, actor, comedian,
essayist on NPR, and co-host of
Extra
and
O2Be, filled in for Keith Olbermann tonight on
Countdown. I didn't recognize him at first, except
I had an "oh, that guy has been anchoring in the afternoons on MSNBC too" moment. And then one of his guests
called him "Brian" and then I slapped my head and said "doh!"
Anyway, interesting to see
a
Daily Show alum anchoring a news program, even if it is one that's not just a straight news show but an
all-around news show that mixes humor with the hard-hitting questions. (The show is repeated at midnight, Eastern time,
if you want to catch it.)

i always liked Brian on The Daily Show, but i think last night's Countdown shows just how unique Olbermann is... it takes, i think, a certain kind of 'gravitas' to mix in the silly with the serious and -not- become a "Fake News Show"... Keith manages to pull it off... Brian seemed a bit too jokey/winky/talky... i wonder how many others flip around Countdown when Keith isn't in the anchor seat?

I thought Brian was dreadful, and I agree with the comment about how unique Keith Olbermann is (though I can generally tolerate Alison Stewart when she sits in). I GROANED when Unger showed a "mirror" of himself as Larry King, and felt he actually had to SAY it was Larry King in the picture -- "in case" we didn't get it?! As dear hubby comments: "welcome to the Jay Leno version of COUNTDOWN." Gack. Sorry folks. No fan here. (Of Leno OR Unger.)

As an aside, I'm still waiting for Olbermann to show up on The Daily Show. I can't imagine they haven't invited him yet, and he was wiling to do the Colbert Report (which, only having seen highlights [damn you, Comcast PVR] was genius) so I can't imagine there's any love lost between the two shows.
Heck, when it comes to news on TV, I get it all from Countdown, Daily Show and SportsCenter =)
