Goodbye Heist

Well, that happened a lot quicker than I expected.
Heist, the stylish NBC robbery drama, has already been axed by the network, Michael Ausiello is
reporting at his site (hey, Ausiello has a
site? Cool.).
Come on, this was a limited-run show anyway, why not let it play out? I caught a couple of
eps, and while I was bugged by Dougray Scott's accent, I thought it was a rather fun, clever show, and I certainly
wanted to see what happened next. But I guess NBC needs the hour for another episode of
Deal Or No Deal.

I've been watching Heist here in the UK for the past 6 weeks and had no idea until tonight when watching the sixth episode that we weren't going to get the full series.
I loved this show, and am so so disappointed that ITV here in the UK gave us it knowing it was only half a series. I am furious, it's like buying a book and finding that the last few chapters are missing.
Does anyone know if they actually made the full series or not? I know they have only shown 6 episodes of a supposed 13 but did they actually make the full 13 and just not show them all or did they stop filming after 6? If they did then hopefully they'll get it out on DVD and pretty soon as I really would like to see how this ends.
One thing is for sure, I won't be watching anymore American shows after this. Sorry, I love Americans in general and you guys keep coming up with some really fantastic shows but I just always am left feeling conned. Shows like Lost and Prison Break were awesome in the beginning, but never getting a proper ending was frustrating, the viewers are just being conned with these shows, the makers are milking them and whilst they start out brilliant by the time the third series come around it's obviously that the writers have no idea where they are going and are rushing things, but it has reached new heights now with Heist with us only getting half a series and I am so disappointed.

I agree - its such a shame when a show is just starting to develop that it ends.
I actually looked forward to each ep, unusual for me. And when the anchor said the other day 'that's it, there is no more' I was shocked!
By the way, we got to see 'Ladies and Gentlemen, sweaty dynamite' here in the UK.
So - any answers to the question above - were more episodes made and any chance of a DVD?
And if Lola's free she can come fix my computer anytime... what a gorgeous girl!
Andy.

I was enjoying the show, also. I imagine this early cancellation means we should look for HDNet to buy unaired episodes and start showing them in 8-12 months?

It's a good show. Can't say I'm surprised after they moved it to the nine o'clock time slot with LOST. Do you really expect the show to put up any kind of decent numbers against Lost? Seriously?! I wanted to see where it was going too. Although I was wondering what they would do with the show once this "Heist" was over with. I assumed they would just go on to another one somewhere else. The major networks rarely give a show a chance to find a following any more. That is dumb because Seinfeld wasn't successful in it's first couple of seasons and NBC wanted to drop it but gave it another chance. We all know what happened there.(Eye roll)

Sorry but I hated this show. I just can't get into rooting for a criminal. The story was rather weak. If these guys are SO brilliant why not use those talents to legitimately steal. For instance, try being a stock broker, lawyer, or the President of the United States.

I really enjoy this show, but not for the story line. I like it for all the characters with the exception of Mickey and the female cop.
The two other cops have a great dynamic of insulting each other on what is totally obvious (ie one is fat, the other is black). Additionally the scenes with Lola and Ricky where he keeps trying to get her to sleep with him are great.
I had a feeling it wouldn't last very long, but damn, 3 eps? Seriously what else are they going to put in the timespot? Just let the season air as it should then when its over cancel it. It shouldn't last more than one gig anyways, so what's the big deal of another 10 episodes?

I was pissed when they moved the show to 9 o'clock because I was not going to be able to watch it with American Idol and Lost on at the same time. I guess I am not missing anything anymore though.

I lived it more than Theif, because it seemed more "fun." I guess the best part was Billy, and the Black cop. (anyone notice he only plays Billy. hes was billy on Yes Dear). But they were great. too bad it's cancled, and they should have put it on Tuesdays or so. EVERYTHING is on thursdays. i have to download everything on thursdays, because I CAN ONLY WATCH SO MUCH.

And the networks wonder why they have no ratings. Who wants to put time into a show just to have it cancelled. My new rule is if a show makes it through a season than I'll start watching it (I broke the rule with "Love Monkey", see what happen!). HBO, F/X, Showcase, these channels have it right. Even if the shows not doing great ratings at least the finish off the season before cancelling. Guess I'll just delete my Heist files. No point in watching them now.

Yes, the show's run was cut from 13 episodes to 6. For those of you who liked it -- thanks so much for watching. It was supposed to be fun and we were just finding our legs when we were cancelled. For those of you who didn't - Why did you watch it? What kind of free time do you have? Also, you should try creating a network show sometime. Not easy. NBC will be showing three more episodes of the show, and I'd be surprised if you don't think it's a top-tier show at the end of it's run.

Mark --
I truly am sad to see this show go away, and so quickly. I'd mentioned some of my issues with the first episode to Joel when he first reviewed the pilot episode (the question of how the heisters knew they'd lose their tail on land), though there were aspects I definitely liked. The twist with Sykes being a "bad girl." The dialog between James and Mickey during jobs.
I won't get further into what I *didn't* like about the show, since that's not what you asked. I love heist stories and I love crafty, sneaky cons, and I really believed that's where you were going with the show.
And Mark, if The Evidence makes it a full season while Heist does not ... I'd be shocked. You have (had) a much better show on your hands. The fact that Heist *and* Lucky (a very much short lived show) were both cut short early, I can certainly understand your frustration.
Good luck in whatever you do next, and keep tabs with us with what you're up to.
Keith

Not surprised it was canceled even though I enjoyed the show. On the one hand I can understand the networks not wanting to spend the huge bucks an hour long show like this costs without getting the ratings. On the other hand, for the life of me I don't know how they expect a show to be a major hit on episode one unless it has a top-10 lead in (and even then, if it looses any audience they cancel it). It takes time for the audience to grow into a show and for word of mouth to work.
Nowadays if I was selling a show the major networks would be the last place I'd want to go. Sure the potential payoff may be greater but the odds of cancellation has to be stacked against you. Anybody think Monk would last on NBC?

Is anyone else put off by having the creator write in and get offended by people saying they didn't like the show? I enjoyed it (although it switched times last week and conflicted with higher priority shows on my TiVo so when you miss one episode of a show like this where the plotline continues it is as good as over) but isn't it obvious from the fact that it's been cancelled that it is not universally beloved? Showing up on blogs to argue with anonymous people about why they didn't like it seems childish at best.

Hey Mark
Thanks for leaving a comment, I unfortunately was one of the people who didn't like the show at all

I watched it because it was in high definition and very visually appealing. Please forward my thanks and congratulations to anyone who had a hand in making the show so impressive to the eye.

Mark,
Heist is a great show. It's a shame that NBC set you up to fail. I am sure Heist crushed Evidence, but to put a brand new show up against Lost, thats just insanity. Heist is smart and funny, and I enjoyed the three episodes I have seen.
Hopefully you can get the full 12 episodes out on DVD so we can see Heist in its full glory. Dougray Scott was a great casting choice, the whole cast was pretty great. Don't worry about everyone putting it down, people don't get the simplistic genius of Heist.
I'm still shocked they didn't cancel My Name Is Earl, I thought that meant Heist would have a chance.

Considering the two typoes and an immature attitude, I'd hope that's not actually the real Mark Cullen. If it is, well, sir, you made a TV version of George Clooney's Ocean's 11 which was itself a remake. When you have a copy of a copy, things start to degrade.

There is no rhyme or reason on the networks anymore.
I enjoyed this show. It was different, wasn't predictable, had an original story line and I didn't have to vote at the end of the show.
I'm sorry they didn't give it time to grow.
TV used to be fun,an escape from the days woes...an escape. Now, they change schedules around to the point of totally frustrating the viewer.
I'm tire of reality shows they just put a reallife picture to the dumbing down of America and that is not reassuring !
But who am I to judge???I like West Wing and we know wher that is going!!

Okay people that did not like this show just needed to take it a face value for what it is- a light fun caper show. Visually stunning and I think the characters were just starting to be fleshed out. Kudos to Mark for showing some tenacity in posting here and boos to NBC for putting it up agaisnt Lost are they insane- oh wait this is the same network thats been letting Surface languish around for way to long.
