This afternoon, NBC will officially announce the news that everybody already knows: Meredith
Vieira is the next co-host of Today. Katie Couric will leave NBC in May to anchor
the CBS Evening News (something that doesn't have Andy Rooney all that thrilled). Vieira has long
been rumored to be in talks with NBC for the position. Although most of us know Meredith Vieira as the least annoying
co-host of The View and as host of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, she also has an extensive news
background. I imagine that NBC considers her the perfect replacement since she's already a television 'personality' but
she actually has experience as a journalist.I wonder how Anne Curry feels about all this. She has filled in a lot for Katie and has gained a much larger role than just a news reader on Today. For a while there, she almost looked like the 'heir apparent'.
Sound off, readers! What do you think about Meredith Vieira??

I only watch The Today Show for a few minutes each morning while getting ready for work but I would have MUCH rather seen Ann Curry in Katie's place.

I'm a big fan of Meredith. Woo hoo! She is smart and funny - two things morning TV is lacking now. I will actually start watching the Today show again because of her.

While I'm happy for Meredith, I really don't see her working with Lauer well. I see a personality clash that's going to look painful on screen.

Unbelievable if true. If it does happen I will probably never watch the Today show again. What ever happened rewarding loyalty and talent. Either Ann Curry or Campbell Brown would be deserving of the post. Look for one or both going elsewhere if Meredith got the job and you certainly couldn't blame them.Ann Curry has the smarts and the personality and would be a very good partner for Matt. Campbell Brown will eventually have her own show. NBC would be wise to ask their viewers before making a choice this big. They stand to lose a lot of their fan base.

I agree...it should have been either Ann Curry or Campbell Brown. Both are hotter, and younger.

I think she has the personality to be a great replacement. She is also smart, and can comment on the hard news issues because of her years of news experience. I have always thought her true talents were wasted on The View. I do enjoy her on Millionaire though, she is very down to earth on it and fun to watch.

I thought Campbell Brown was heir apparent since she host the weekend edition doing all the things that Katie does during the week and fills in whenever Katie goes on vacation. I never got the impression that Ann wanted Katie's job. In fact she just landed the Dateline gig in the last year. She seems to want to do the more serious, harder edge stories and not the fluff morning stuff.
Anyway, Meredith is a decent choice even though I wanted Campbell Brown. I like Meredith on the View but I just don't see the chemistry with Matt at all. I am happy to see Katie go. I have grown tired of her turning all interviews into something about herself for too long now. She won't be able to do that on the nightly news, hopefully. I won't be watching anyway so it doesn't matter.

Yet another reason for me NOT to watch Today. Never really a fan of the show (or any morning news program, for that matter). It has always been ultra-liberal in its views (just a touch less since "should-be-leader of the NAACP Bryant Gumbel left years ago). Anne Curry got a raw end of the deal, since "The Peacock" opted to replace one young white liberal woman with another. Guess the nation's not ready for another Asian news anchor (since Connie Chung was forced out at CBS). NBC could have really shaken things up by going after Conservative boy-toy Sean Hannity from Fox News Channel, but that would have ticked off New York viewers...the only "valuable" viewers that they seem to cater to! Would have gotten ratings though!
Question is, "Who's going to replace Meredith at 'Barbara's Baby'?" Can't choose a man, because their "View" isn't important. Can't choose another black or Asian...they already have a place. Annoying New Yorker? Joy is comfy there (until she gets fired for cat fighting with Star). Here's a suggestion that is sure to fill the void and satisfy every remaining ethicity/culture...a Middle Eastern Jewish Lesbian!!!

Good news for Meredith and now I can actually watch the Today Show. Katie was making it unwatchable for me for about the past 3 years....I couldn't stand that smug look on her overpaid face another minute. I also like that Meredith has such a strong journalism background. If she can make it appear that she tolerates Star Jones and Joy Behar, Matt will be a piece of cake for her. Excellent news indeed!

Anne Curry was the perfect choice. She is the reporter that the Today Show sent out to do the international story. Meredith, well, she's so obviously liberal that I think she is an inappropriate choice. We don't know Katie or Matt's politics. The View was all about personal loudmouth women and their agendas. And as hard as it was to hear with all those people talking, I thought Meredith was where she belonged or was most comfortable as she had long since given up her street credibility as a reporter when she took the job on "The View".

I must say I'm pretty disappointed in NBC's choice for replacing Katie Couric. I think Campbell Brown would have been a much better choice. She's already proven that she knows how to do the Today show since she does the weekend edition and she seems to do well paired with Matt when she fills in. It just seems to make more sense that they would pick her instead of Meredith Viera. Granted, the ratings will more than likely go down a little anyway due to Katie's departure, but I don't think there would have been a whole lot of damage if Campbell took the position. In fact, quite a few people might have even preferred her to Katie since she seems to have a more serious news reputation and just enough perkiness to keep things light in the mornings. Unfortunately, NBC has chosen to go with the dry, sardonic, boring, and sometimes seemingly rude Meredith. I think it definitely would have been better to stick with someone who was already associated with Today. My second choice after Campbell would have been Ann Curry, followed by Natalie Morales. I guess I'll give Meredith a try, but I may become a Good Morning America viewer soon if I don't like the feel of the show.

Ann Curry is just so terrible that I am happy that it is somebody other than her. I would have prefered Campbell Brown - I think that she is better - but, then again, she may be better than the Today show; perhaps she is being groomed for something better.

Let me just say I'm happy they didn't go the "let's make it a reality bit to select the next co-host" route. They could have called it "Next on Today".
Yeah, let's be very glad they didn't do that.

I can't stand Meredith Vierra. It should have been Campbell Brown or Anne Curry with Campbell at the newsdesk.
I guess I'll have to find something else to watch. The local WB affiliate shows Home Improvement and I loves me some Patricia Richardson.

Bryce, dude did you actually suggest Sean Hannity???
I can't stand that guy. I'm not even talking about his politics here, just his style.

Jacob, obviously some of us here don't understand the word "sarcasm"...it was just my way of taking a cheap shot at NBC and their loyalty to the liberal faith. I guess I should have gotten my point across by interchanging Sean Hannity's name with Bill O'Reilly.
Want to know the truth? NBC should have just pulled the trigger and replaced her with Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton. That's the direction that network seems to be headed anyway!

I can't say I am surprise with this ...NBC replacing Katie Couric with Meredith "war built on lies" Vieira. Vieira can follow Katie Couric's footsteps and pretend to be unbiased to viewers while asking overtly tough questions to conservative guests and throwing soft balls at liberal guests.

When I initially heared that Meredith Veira was in line for replacing Katie Couric "I thought what a joke!" Now, I'm shocked to hear the news! I'm really glad to see Katie Couric leaving, but why not replace her with Ann Curry or Campbell Brown? These are great women with so much intelligence, poise and add so much to the show. Campbell Brown would have really been my first choice, then Ann Curry. Hope they'll stick around!

Hasn't anyone noticed Campbell Brown's speach impediment? I like the lady, she has a well trained professional voice; but the impediment keeps coming through. It drives me nuts! JC
