The NY Post's Page Six is reporting that The same source says that Prince "hates the show and has never even watched it." Um, how can he hate it if he doesn't even watch it? Not that he wouldn't hate it if he watched it. I'm sure he would.

It is a simple concept show. It is easy to understand the show without watching it.
I remember in the Kevin Smith College Lecture DVD, he tells a story of Prince upset about how other people can do covers of songs when the original artist does not want that to happen.
So I can see where he would hate the show just based on the concept of it.

It's perfectly possible to hate "American Idol" without ever watching it. I've never seen a minute, and I HATE, HATE, HATE it.
It's amateur night, it's soapy, it takes jobs away from creative people, reduces the options for dramatic/comedic television shows, turns otherwise sensible people into babbling idiot fans gossiping over useless, talentless no-names who will vanish from the public's attention in 2.3 minutes, and most of all, it's still HUGELY FRICKING POPULAR after so long on the air!
Don't get me started on "Survivor". Or "Wife Swap". Or "Fear Factor". Or "Extreme Pity Party: Home Edition". Or whatever vile crap reality shows Fox is still churning out from the pits of hell.
So yeah, I can see how Prince might hate "Idol" without viewing it. :-)

Other celebs and past performers are known to be "Idol Fans" thats why they shared the stage to perform. After Barry Manilow performed, I might be off a little on the numbers his new album jumped from 50 something to like 4-5 on the charts. Prince is now, in my opinion, joining the show for his own personal gain. If he doesn't like or watch the show, he should not perform.
Let him go on a talk show or something to promote his new album. Bring on someone better who deserves the publicity. IDEA!In the future have a battle of the bands. HAve the winner have their first time ever TV performance on the show. Thanks!

Although I disagree entirely with you (I can't get enough of reality TV, with the exception of that disgustingly annoying "Flavor of Love" show), your post is very well written, and quite humorous.

Who cares if Prince watches the show or not. Who cares if he likes the show or not. Who cares if he gets personal gain from the publicity being on the show, duh, isn't that what it is about. It's not like he needs the money or fame. What I care about is seeing one of the most talented performers I can think of perform. I think this is a great move on American Idol's part if it is true, and I would give 20 pounds of fat off my fanny just to be there and see my idol. I love Prince and admire and respect him to the hilt, and would give the 10 teeth i have left to see him. Man, what a wonderful performer to see. I am in awe and shiver with hope this is true

I really don't want Prince to perform on American Idol. I think he is to lude and sexual for the show. I was surprised that they would actually allow Shakira on the show. I thought it was a bit too much. American Idol is a family show. Not a sexed-up dance off.

I'm with you Faith! Who cares if Prince watches or even likes the show! I'll take any chance I can to see him perform! He's the best musician on this earth! And he's changed his ways with his music. He's no longer profane and/or graphic with his lyrics. So I say "Bring him on, Idol!" Yay! My VCR is set & ready to record!! :)

I totally agree with a poster who said he was surprised Shakira was put on ID dancing her dance. It was "showy" and a strange format for Idol which trys for that all-around American image. Shakira may be good at what she does, but it shouldn't have been done on Idol. My opinion...

They shouldn't let people on the show that dance better than they sing, as, they've made several of their contestants feel like you can't be a star if you like to dance when you sing.
I was appauled when Sharika appeared on the show with her song "hips don't lie"
no singing talent at all. we all know what talent she has ; ( and that is what they told some that this show wasn't about.

IT DOESN'T MATTER IF ONE WATCHES THE SHOW OR DOESN'T LIKE THE SHOW, IF YOU HAVE SOME TYPE OF TALENT YOU LOOK FOR IT IN OTHERS. NO ONE KNOWS ALL THAT THEY NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SINGING STYLES AND MUSICAL ABILITIES. HALL AND OATES, ARE MUSICAL WONDERS. THEY HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR YEARS AND YEARS AND THEY ARE STILL GOING STRONG. THEY NEED TO GO ON THE SHOW AND GIVE THE FOLKS A JOLT. STEVIE WONDER IS A "WONDER" HE'S BEEN AROUND FOR AGES AND HE'S STILL CONTRIBUTING TO THE CAUSE. BARRY MANILOW IS A REAL TROOPER. I THINK THAT IT REALLY DOES SOMETHING FOR THOSE WHO ARE ESTABLISHED AND WANT TO CONTRIBUTE TO NEW ARTIST.

I don't know why anyone would want Prince on Am. Idol. He is definitely lewd.
The show tends to contradict itself. It says it is for the family, then makes fun of those who sing "too family" oriented. It says it wants the contestants to be versatile. Then when they are, it tells them to go back to their roots. It says "dance," but if they dance too well or not well enough, they get told "it is a singing competition." Then they stand still and are told to move. Amer Idol has enough stupidity without adding Prince to the mix!!

To Scott: If you think that Idol takes away time for comedic opportunity on television, it is obvious that you have never seen it. I get lots of chuckles out of it. Don't knock it 'till you try it!
I think it would be kinda fun to have Prince play. I think he can figure out how not to be "lewd" in prime time. Sure as heck will be better than that awful Shakira. Blah. Stevie Wonder would have been awesome when he was on the show 2 weeks ago if his new song wasn't so boring.

Liked Prince some 15 to 20 years ago - then he became 'the one formerly known as'.
Now with 'Black Sweat' - talk about a racial slant !!! But guess stupid white consumers are just going to sit back, buy it, and think it's kewl.
Give me a break.
J-----
PS - Plus he's not young and sexy anymore.

Prince needs to be on the show.....for one thing, that show rarely has anyone with ANY musical talent whatsoever, so he would be a major step up and would make everyone else's "performances" seem embarassing. As for being lewd, Prince got religion a few years ago, and even the few songs he performs now that are sexual in any way are very very tame compared with what he did 20 years ago. Here are his talents.....great producer, songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and yes, dancer. He wipes the floor with anyone who has ever been a contestant on that show. Actually, it is beneath him to be on it, in my opinion, but it is a good P.R. move in order to promote his new cd. And as we all should know...American Idol is only about P.R. as Simon owns the show as well as he gets a cut of any songs or cds the contestants put out. Also, his "bad guy" image is a put-on, as he knows that any show like that gets more buzz by having a villain character. He is a marketing genius....he owns the show, stars in it, and makes the most money from it. Well that's all I have to say about that wretched show.

"Weird Al" says Prince is the sole guy who won't ever allow his song's to be parodied... So maybe this is the only way he thinks he can get his songs out there to the major public.
