We've been reading these rumours
for months now, but it finally looks like the speculation is about to end. TV Week says that Today
Show diva Katie Couric is about to sign a deal to become the anchor of the CBS Evening News. An
announcement is said to be coming this week. If the report is true, it'll be interesting to see how NBC handles it.
Will they allow Katie to continue on the Today Show until the end of her contract in May and have a big
farewell event at the end? Will they let her out of her contract early and have her join CBS right away? (Extremely
doubtful on that one!) The article goes on to say that The View's Meredith Vieira is being considered, among
others, as a candidate to take Couric's slot. (Anyone but Star Jones!).
Will Katie Couric bring viewers back to the CBS Evening News? Certainly, there will be quite a bit of interest just for curiousity's sake, but will it last past the first few weeks? This oughta be good...

I'm actually shocked that they would consider Meredith Viera because she has been very outspoken on many a topic on "The View" and is an admitted liberal.
Won't that cause the righties to retaliate even further against the MSM.
I thought that news anchors and reporters were suppose to never divulge their party affiliations.

What do I call Katie Couric, Sy?
A right wing apologist! Ever see her attack dog interviews with Dick Durban, Russ Feingold and Jack Murtha? Very different style than the soft ball, nodding her head "yes" and ending the questions with with the tagline "right?" when she asks questions during interviews with the "PR" geeks from the White House with their "canned spin".
You think Katie is a Liberal, Sy????? Then you are a definate "12" on the right hand of the ruler, much further right wing than she is.
Chris, you are correct! This really must be an April Fools joke!

I'm with Chris on this...Katie Couric has spent the last howevermany years doing nothing but reading updates someone else has written and asking goofy questions of the latest fad of the week. She has no standing to anchor the evening news.

Ugh...she can't leave Matt Lauer and Al Roker!!!! It won't be the same without her.....this stinks. As a Mom, I would think she'd want to be home at night with her girls. But, if they are really serious, what about Campbell Brown or Ann Curry replacing her, they can't just bring in an "outsider". Yikes I hope this was all an April Fool's joke!!

I agree that they should promote from within. Ann Curry has paid her dues, and is very charismatic, and qualified. Kudos to Katie for wanting to further her career, and as for "reading what other people have written", give her a chance to rise up to the challenge. I think it would be a good move for her and for CBS, whose rating isn't at the top... right?

Everyone will be the loser if Katie goes to CBS! People will watch her for the first couple of weeks and then go back to Brian Williams or whoever else they have been watching in that time slot. She can do the hard interviews but the nightly news is not conducive for those interviews nor letting anyone guess her private political views. Guess most people forgot what office her sister held in Virginia and was going to run for before she died of cancer. The nightly news and perkiness are not something that I want to watch at 6:30 at night, just the news, PLEASE!

Yes I think Katie Couric is VERY liberal ...if you fail to see that, then you are blind. If you don't believe me, there are videos you can check it out yourself:

I will never watch CBS news again. Bob is so nice and uncle-ish. Katie is a Diva. I just can't believe CBS would hire her. John Roberts would have been great, but he went to CNN because they didn't pick him. Katie? There goes the neighborhood.

Oh thank God now I can go back to the Today Show. I so like everyone there but the blathering Katie. I cannot stand to hear someone like her who makes millions of dollars a year thinking she is bonding with the rest of us by talking about how they are so frugal. It is soooo phony and unreal. She is sitting there in high heels that could feed my family for a week, blathering. I do wish they would promote Ann Curry she is real, smart and always on the point. She makes no bones about being fakey frugal.

If Katie goes to CBS I would watch the nightly news for the first week out of curiosity, then after getting bored with her, I would go back to watching Brian Williams. She is too bubbly and perky to deliver "hard news." She should stay put where she is.

Katie Couric is very charismatic and I think under rated. Prejudice against a woman is clearly evident. It's the same prejudice that's preventing the election of a female President. There are a lot of intelligent women out there who are smarter than the current President.

I realize what I'm about to say is obvious:
There's no guarantee that Katie's audience will follow her to the Evening News on another network.
Therefore, this deal will look terrible when her numbers drop the CBS Evening News back into third place. Listen, I understand the bit about getting away from the grandfatherly like geezers who normally read the news. I understand about getting a news reader with charisma. Charisma trumps ability when you're talking about a TV news reader.
But if anyone thinks Katie's "goodwill" will last long at CBS, they're sadly mistaken.
First we'll hear the public cat scratching from every pundit and quasi-TV-personality with screen time.
Expect comparisons of CBS buying Katie like Sirius satellite buying Howard Stern.
Second, we'll have some memos detailing the CBS internal grumbling.
Third, the ratings watchers will key in on their analysis of the week's ratings, like two weeks is enough to judge how successful a huge comittment like Katie's contract is.
And lastly, the monthly news magazines will try to come up with a "What's Next For Nightly News? Will it perish in the cachophany of other news sources?" take on how important (or not important) having a "name" for a news reader in the first place. Comparisons to the ABC approach with the split anchors will be made, noting that one anchor of the pair went to Iraq to read his share of the news only to be seriously injured in a roadside attack.
In the end, the ratings will go up for CBS, but not by enough to justify the cost in and of itself. However, buying such a name for the CBS Evening News will most certainly show how CBS News is trying to remain important. Well... that's what they'll tell themselves, anyway.
Me, I think it's a huge waste of CBS' money.

Can anyone recall the name of the fill-in host (female) that was on the Today Show...hasn't been around since before the Olympics...thank goodness! She had a big horse-mouth laugh and did way too much slapping and interrupting. So glad she's gone, but wish I could remember her name.
Also, wherever Katie goes, hopefully she will also quit interrupting people and trying to act hard ass to some guests.

I think if Meredith Viera were to fill Katie's position I would stop watching the "Today" Show. I think Campbell Brown would be an excellent choice.
