After weeks of idling, Lost finally gave us a juicy nugget in last night's episode. It came in the form of a glow-in-the-dark map on the inside of a blast door. It appears to be a map of all the Dharma Initiative hatches on the island, and something in the middle signified with a giant, pink question mark. It looks as though all the hatches were meant to lead to that middle spot, but they weren't finished or were blocked off (as marked with X's). Maybe that's what the concrete is that Jack and Sayid found.
According to this guy, who evidently stayed up all night decoding the map, it has several phrases, such as "Sursum Corda", and "I Am Here" on the Swan hatch (where the characters are). There are several other phrases that I'm guessing are in Latin.
Here's another, deconstructed version of the map with a lot more text (somebody has Hi Def TV!).
What do you see?

The other map someone posted in the comments for the recap is a lot more detailed and has translations on it - too lazy to look for it, but I'm sure someone else will copy/paste for me.

On the map I see four boxes numbered CV I (in roman numbers)CV II, CV IIX and CV II.
In the hatch ccw from Iam here, there is written MIFUNE, I think.
Quote from the wall: " Mifune CV I Native.... accident"
a bit exciting...

on a somewhat unrelated topic.....
On the official podcase a while back, they answered a question about why lost was not shown in widescreen format (with exception of hi-def broadcasts) as some of the easter eggs get 'lost' on the normal viewer.
They said that it was something NBC made a decision on and they would rather it be widescreen of course.
Something that is confusing me as much as this map is at the moment is why nbc decided not to show lost in widescreen but ran last weeks 'the office' (can't remember if it was a re-run) in widescreen.
odd. I bet the answer is hidden in the room in the center of this map.

Full of delicious Losty goodness...notice where it says:
Stated Goal: Accelerated de-territorialization of ursus maritmus through gene therapy and extreme climate change.
Mursus maritmus = Polar Bear!
...and the reference to a weather project! Could be how so many things crash into the island.
...and the refences to "cerberus relate activity" and "unlikey due to cerberus activity". I think we now have the name of the black smoke (since Cerberus guarded the gates to Hades, it would make sense as a name for the "security system".
Very very cool.

Lost is shown on ABC, not NBC, so I'm not sure I understand what you're saying.
There was a lot of speculation last night in my own personal "Lost" clique regarding the map. My own two cents: The bunkers/hatches are not actually laid out in the octagonal pattern shown in the map; I think it's merely representative of the general configuration of them. The Xs at the end of each respective corridor I think signify that whoever made the map either didn't get to explore those passageways, or like you mentioned, they are cemented off like the one we have seen. But I do like the recurring octagon motif, both in the Dharma logo and the map.
Also, JESUS GOD that blunt round thing must have hurt like the fiery pits of hell when it went into Locke's leg.

The writing about the DHARMA intranet with dates is interesting. I you assume (and I know that you probably shouldn't assume anything with this show) that the show is taking place a couple of months after the show first aired on tv, that would mean that it is around the first of the year, in 2005.

The dude didn't spend all night... he's magnificently focused and geekily attentive because he did it all in less than four hours.
The show ended at ten. I recorded it because I was busy and didn't finish the show until about 1:30 AM and I think I was looking at that overlay around two. Maybe I was seeing it at 3 AM and he got it done in less than five.

If you compare the map to Mr. Gale's map, it seems there are mountains on or surrounding the big question mark.

You can match up the stream at the bottom of Gale's map with the one a bit above Swan on the hatch map.
Also, has anyone gotten to work on deciphering the woman's voice on the loudspeaker before the lockdown?

Thanks for the links everyone. Finally some interesting stuff starting to happen again on Lost!
I am most intrigued by "The Swan" and what connection it has to the numbers. And "I Am Here"... who the heck made this map?

Well, the ABC, NBC thing could come from how networks buy shows that are produced by other networks, but since the other network produces it, it can slap its name on the end of the show. I don't think this is the case with Lost though...

I'm thinking Desmond made the map (total guess). I like the espisode title, "Lockdown" - refers to the obvious, the blast doors enforcing a lockdown, but also to our pal Locke. "Locke is down!" Clever as always.

i agree with desmond as being a likely creator of the map (or at least contributor to it) the latin would make sense because he was a doctor or on the way to becoming one - the episode where he and jack meet. speaking of latin, i found some translations for the latin on the map ...
Malum consilium quod mutari non potest - It's a bad plan that can't be changed. (Publilius Syrus)
Nil actum reputa si quid superest agendum - Don't consider that anything has been done if anything is left to be done. (Lucan)
Ut sit magna, tamen certe lenta ira deorum est - The wrath of the gods may be great, but it certainly is slow
Cogito ergo doleo - I think therefore I am depressed
Liberate te ex inferis - Save yourself from hell
Sursum corda - Lift up your hearts (to God)
Credo nos in fluctu eodem esse - I think we're on the same wavelength

I think it was Desmond too #16. Especially with some of the dates noted being relatively recent. Didn't Desmond say he'd been there for 3 years or so? So assuming 2005 is their current date, that puts it back to 2002 that Desmond took up residence. The latest date is 1/6/03, so the two coincide. He either knew who wrote it, wrote it himself, or maybe there's a troll that writes on the door, when it's in the recessed position above the ceiling!
